View MoreThe house is very quiet, which is the first thing that strikes me.
Not calm and peaceful.
Being still and watching.
It looks like the house grew out of the rock. The dark stone and tall windows make me feel like they are judging me. The air feels cooler than it should, even though the sun is still out.
My mom gives me a light squeeze on the hand and says, "This is home now."
Home.
I say "yes," but my chest hurts. There are too many dark and thick trees behind the house. The trees lean against the walls, casting long shadows that look like fingers.
It's not good for me.
The front porch door opens and a tall man leaves. My stepfather. Rich. Strong. He smiles like this spot has always been his.
The man says, "Welcome." "The boys are in there."
Boys.
It doesn't sound right.
It hits me as soon as I walk in the door.
Stress.
Heavy, but not on my skin. Heavy like the air itself. My heart beats faster. The chandelier up there dances a few times and then stays still.
Then I see them.
Three guys are standing at the end of the hall.
They don't look anything alike, but they both feel the same. Like two sides of the same storm.
The main one is the first one to go.
A lot of height. Wide shoulder blades. Dark hair pulled back in a neat way. His gray eyes look right at me and are very sharp and critical.
Kael.
How did I get to know his name? I do it.
He meets me and says, "This is Selene." "Your sister."
Kael's jaw gets tight.
The person next to him smiles slowly. His hair is golden brown and falls into his warm amber eyes. His face tells me he's up to no good; it looks like he's already enjoying how stupid I look.
"And this must be the girl who smells like the moon," he says in a light voice.
I get stiff. "Excuse me?"
Kael looks at him to warn him.
That third guy doesn't smile.
From behind, he watches me. His eyes are a deep blue color that makes them almost look black. It looks like he's taking me apart piece by piece when he looks at me.
Draven.
That's all he says: "You shouldn't be here."
It gives me chills.
"I don't think that's up to you," I say with a raised chin.
He has a brief flash of something in his eyes. Wow, what a shock! An interest. Something bad.
There are soft creaks in the house when we move.
"Rules," Kael says out of the blue. "You'll be safe if you follow them."
I ask, "What are the rules?"
He gives it some thought. "Don't ever go into the woods by yourself." Do not leave the house at night.
Thorne turns around and smiles even more. "And don't believe what you hear at night."
It dries out my mouth. "Why?"
No one talks.
That night, I lie awake in my new room and look at the roof while the moonlight falls on the floor. A buzzing sound is made by the air. It feels like something under my skin is trying to wake up because it's warm and tense.
Then I hear it.
A soft sound.
Not wind.
Not something living.
Whatl.
As I sit up, my heart beats fast, and I can hear the sound in the forest. It's deep, strong, and close.
After that, someone else takes it.
One more.
Three sounds.
Everybody is calling to the moon.
As I move to the window and pull back the curtain, my hands start to shake.
At the edge of the forest below, three big shapes move into the moonlight.
I'm having trouble breathing.
Since they aren't men anymore.
And one of them slowly turns his head to look at me.---
“Selene… if you can hear me fight.”Kael’s voice finds me in the dark, not as sound but as something deeper, a pull, a promise. I don’t open my eyes immediately because I don’t know what I’ll see when I do. Power or emptiness.“Come on, Moonbound,” another voice murmurs, softer, colder. “Don’t tell me you break this easily.”Darius. Of course. Even here, wherever here is, he finds a way in.My fingers twitch. That’s the first thing I feel. Then the ground beneath me, smooth, cold, humming. I inhale sharply and open my eyes.Silver stretches endlessly around me. The same world from before, but clearer now, sharper. Like I’m no longer drifting through it. Like I belong here.“No…” I push myself up slowly, my body unsteady but lighter than it should be. “No, I don’t…”But the lie dies in my throat because the moment I stand, the world responds. The silver ground ripples beneath my feet. The sky, if it even is a sky, bends, and the moon above moves closer, watching, waiting for me.“You f
“Don’t you dare let go of me, Selene.”Kael’s voice cuts through the chaos like a blade, raw and desperate, and it’s the first thing that anchors me back to myself.I didn’t realize I was slipping.I didn’t realize how far.The world around me is no longer the forest. Not fully. Not anymore. It’s… something else. The ground beneath my feet isn’t earth—it’s silver. Endless, glowing, pulsing like a living heart. The sky above is darker than night, yet the moon hangs impossibly close, massive and watching. Judging.Waiting.And I am standing at the center of it.Alone.“No…” I whisper, my voice echoing strangely, like it doesn’t belong to me. “No, this isn’t real.”But it is.I can feel it in my blood. The Moonbound power isn’t just awake anymore. It has taken me.“Selene!”Kael again. Closer this time. Urgent. Furious.I turn and for a second, the world flickers. The forest crashes back into view.Broken trees. Burned ground. The air thick with power and smoke.Kael is there, his hand l
There were molten sparks of red, silver, black, and blood in the forest. Each one was a reminder of the guardian's trials. High above, the Shadowed Moon gave off a soft silver light that mixed with the brightness of my Silver Heart, which was now fully joined with the inheritance. Every piece, every pulse, and every link felt alive and connected to my own heartbeat. Kael looked around the clearing with his amber eyes. "Moonbound... things are quiet now." It is too quiet. Thorne's golden eyes got narrow, and his claws tensed up. "Every shadow has gone away, but something still stands there." It's there for me. Draven's dark blue eyes were always steady, but there was a hint of worry in them. "The guardian told us not to do that." Yes, we have mastery, but we must always be alert. Power gets our attention, even from things we can't see yet. I took a sharp breath in, and Silver Heart flared, sending molten energy shooting across the clearing. Red, silver, black, and ruby sp
The forest was very quiet. Even the molten sparks of red, silver, black, and crimson that were left over from the fifth trial seemed to be frozen in midair, as if they were holding their breath. The guardian stood tall above, its eyes filled with a huge, molten silver fire. Every shadow and ember of energy seemed to be twitching with excitement. "You have made it through every test, Moonbound," the guardian said in a voice that sounded like mountains and thunder. "Your bravery, loyalty, heart, and pulse have shown that they are worthy. But mastery isn't just about power; it's about understanding. The final revelation is waiting." The huge guardian lowered its huge head in front of me, and the forest seemed to bend toward us. The molten sparks swirled violently, making a shape—an orb of pure, radiant energy that pulsed with molten red, silver, black, and crimson. Visions flickered inside it—pieces of the Shadowed Moon, the Silver Heart, and the inheritance itself, all linked in ways
