The forest was never truly silent.

Even on the stillest nights, when the wind refused to move the towering pines and the stars hid behind thick clouds, there was always something watching.

Emily Carter knew that.

Growing up in the tiny mountain town of Black Hollow, she'd heard every story the old-timers told. Tales of missing hunters. Strange howls echoing through the valleys. Massive paw prints that disappeared into solid rock.

She never believed any of them.

Until tonight.

Rain soaked through her jacket as she hurried along the old logging road, her flashlight barely cutting through the darkness.

"Seriously?" she muttered. "This is exactly how horror movies start."

Her SUV had broken down nearly five miles back. No cell service. No passing cars.

The nearest town was another two miles ahead.

A twig snapped.

Emily froze.

The beam from her flashlight swept across the trees.

Nothing.

Probably a deer.

Another crack.

Closer.

Then...

A low growl.

Not a dog.

Not a bear.

Something... bigger.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

The flashlight shook in her hand as two glowing amber eyes appeared between the trees.

They were impossibly high off the ground.

The creature stepped forward.

Seven feet tall.

Covered in dark silver fur that glistened with rain.

Its shoulders were broader than any man she'd ever seen, muscles rippling beneath its coat.

Its muzzle curled back, revealing rows of dagger-like teeth.

Emily couldn't breathe.

"Wolf..."

No.

It stood on two legs.

It wasn't a wolf.

It wasn't human either.

It took one slow step toward her.

Emily screamed and ran.

Branches whipped across her face as she crashed through the woods.

Behind her came heavy footsteps.

Not running.

Walking.

As if it already knew she'd never escape.

She tripped over a root and tumbled down a steep embankment.

Pain exploded through her ankle.

She scrambled backward until her spine hit a massive oak tree.

The creature emerged from the darkness.

Its glowing eyes locked onto hers.

It tilted its head.

Instead of attacking...

It sniffed the air.

Everything changed.

The beast froze.

Its ears flattened.

Confusion flashed across its face.

Then something almost impossible happened.

Its glowing eyes softened.

"No..."

The voice was rough, strained, almost painful.

"...Mate."

Emily stared.

Her mind refused to process what she'd just heard.

The monster took another step toward her before suddenly roaring in agony.

It clutched its head.

Bones cracked.

Its enormous body convulsed.

Emily watched in horror as the fur began to recede.

The towering beast collapsed onto one knee, transforming before her eyes.

Minutes later, kneeling in the rain where the monster had stood, was a man.

He was naked except for the shredded remains of dark jeans hanging from his hips.

His black hair clung to his face as he struggled to breathe.

A long scar crossed his chest.

His piercing silver eyes met hers.

"You have to leave."

His voice was urgent.

"They'll smell you."

Emily's heart raced.

"Who will?"

He looked toward the trees.

Every muscle in his body tensed.

Then came the howls.

Not one.

Not two.

Dozens.

Echoing from every direction.

The man's face went pale.

"They found us."

The forest erupted with movement.

Dark shapes raced through the trees, impossibly fast.

Glowing eyes appeared one after another, surrounding the clearing.

The man stepped in front of Emily.

His body trembled as claws began extending from his fingertips once again.

"You need to run," he whispered.

"What about you?"

He smiled sadly without taking his eyes off the approaching pack.

"I was never the one they came for."

A massive black werewolf stepped into the clearing.

Unlike the others, this one stood nearly nine feet tall, with crimson eyes and a coat black as midnight.

Its voice rumbled like distant thunder.

"Alpha Kael."

The silver-eyed man stiffened.

"You've broken our oldest law."

The black wolf's gaze shifted to Emily.

"You let your human mate live."

Emily looked at the man in disbelief.

"Mate?"

Kael closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he whispered the words that changed everything.

"I've been looking for you... my entire life."

Kael remained standing in the middle of the road long after Adrian disappeared. The forest was silent again. No footsteps. No rustling branches.Nothing.He looked down at the folded map in his hand. The paper was old.Very old.Its edges had yellowed with age, and the ink had faded enough that some of the trail markings were barely visible.Yet one place stood out clearly.Hawthorne Falls.A blue circle surrounded it.Nothing else.No explanation. No note.No reason.Kael turned the map over. The back was blank. He exhaled slowly before climbing back into his truck. As he drove toward the lodge, one thought refused to leave him.How does he know Emily's name? Not just her name.He knew things about her.Things no stranger should know. And despite every instinct telling Kael to distrust him...Adrian had never once lied.He simply refused to answer the questions that mattered most. The Crescent Moon Lodge was quiet when Kael finally returned. Most of the pack had gone home after the f

Emily didn't realize how late it was until she glanced at her watch.10:47 p.m.She looked out across Crescent Lake. The bonfire had burned down to glowing embers.Only a handful of townspeople remained, laughing quietly around the fire while children slept on blankets in their parents' laps."I should probably head home," she said.Kael nodded."You've had a long day.""I don't think I've ever walked this much in one day."He smiled."You kept up.""Barely.""I didn't hear you complain once."Emily laughed."My feet might disagree tomorrow."For a moment, neither of them moved. The lake reflected thousands of stars.Somewhere across the water, a loon called into the night. It was the kind of peaceful silence that didn't need to be filled.Emily finally smiled."Thank you."Kael looked over."For what?""For today.""For yesterday.""For...everything, really.""You've made moving here a lot easier than I expected."His expression softened."I'm glad."She hesitated before speaking aga

No one on the trail moved. The forest seemed to be holding its breath.Sheriff Reeves slowly lowered his flashlight."Did everyone see that?"One of the firefighters swallowed hard."I wish I hadn't."Ben kept staring at the ridge."It wasn't a bear.""No," Kael answered quietly."It wasn't."The old retriever, Ranger, had backed against Kael's leg. The dog's ears were pinned flat, and a low whine vibrated deep in his throat.Kael knelt beside him."Easy."Ranger immediately leaned into his hand. The dog's fear wasn't fading. If anything...It was growing.Noah slowly swept his flashlight across the ridge one last time."Do we go after it?"Kael didn't answer immediately.Instead, he closed his eyes.He listened. The wind whispered through the pines.A creek rushed somewhere downhill. An owl called from deep within the valley.Then...Nothing.Whatever had been there was gone."We're heading back."Ben looked surprised."That's it?""We found the dog.""We know the boy is safe."Sheri

For several long seconds, no one spoke.Ranger stood in the middle of the trail, chest heaving, his golden coat damp with sweat and bits of leaves clinging to his fur.He barked once.Twice.Then trotted a few steps into the darkness before looking back over his shoulder. It was obvious. He wanted them to follow.Sheriff Reeves knelt beside the old retriever, running careful hands over his shoulders and legs."No blood."One of the firefighters let out a relieved sigh."He looks okay."Kael wasn't convinced. He crouched beside the dog."Easy, buddy."Ranger immediately stopped barking.Instead, he pressed against Kael's leg, whining softly. The dog's entire body trembled.Kael gently examined the broken collar. It hadn't been cut.It hadn't worn out.It had been snapped apart by tremendous force. He looked into the forest again.Something powerful had grabbed this dog......and then let him go.That didn't make sense."What do you think happened?" Sheriff Reeves asked quietly.Kael sl

No one moved. The crackling of the bonfire suddenly seemed deafening. The little boy clung to his mother, his small body shaking so hard that his words came out between ragged breaths."It... it wasn't a bear."His mother knelt in front of him, brushing dirt and pine needles from his jacket."Slow down, sweetheart.""What did you see?"The boy pointed with a trembling finger toward the darkness beyond the trees."I don't know.""It was...big.""It grabbed Ranger."Several people exchanged confused looks."Who's Ranger?" someone asked."My dog."The boy's voice broke."He chased something into the woods.""I ran after him.""I heard him barking."His eyes filled with fresh tears."And then he yelped."The forest beyond the fire remained perfectly still.Too still.Emily looked toward the tree line. She couldn't see anything.Only darkness between the towering pines.Still...A strange feeling settled over her.Not fear.More like...The unmistakable sensation that someone was standing

By early evening, the Founder's Festival had settled into a different rhythm. The families with young children drifted home carrying prizes and cotton candy. The craft booths began packing away delicate pottery and handmade quilts.Strings of warm white lights blinked on one by one above Main Street, casting a golden glow over the sidewalks.Music floated through the square as a local folk band took the stage beneath the gazebo. The mountains surrounding Black Hollow disappeared into deep blue shadows.Emily stood near the edge of the park with a paper cup of hot cider warming her hands. She watched couples dance beneath the lights while friends laughed around picnic tables. She hadn't expected to enjoy herself this much. Her phone buzzed. One bar of service.Just enough.Mom CallingEmily smiled and answered."Hi, Mom.""There's my girl."Sarah sounded relieved."I've been trying to call all afternoon.""The festival has been crazy.""I wish I could see it."Emily slowly turned in a
