LOGINNivia POV.
"Let go of her," Mateo said, tugging on my arm and drawing me close to him. "No, you let go," Justin retorted, pulling me back. Was this some kind of joke? Was the universe messing with me? Not one but two mates? When I thought I wouldn't be lucky enough to get one and even if I managed to, he wouldn't want me. Now here I was, being pulled in different directions by my best friend and crush. They all want me. The moon goddess definitely had a weird sense of humor. "She is mine, I got here first," Mateo insisted, stepping in front of me. "You were only two seconds early, I was right behind you," Justin countered, also stepping forward. They were face to face with each other in a stand-off, their faces so close that their noses almost touched. "You don't even like her, you rejected her before remember?" Mateo grated, his voice growing thick with emotion. "That was before I knew she was my mate. I won't let her go now that I know she is mine," Justin replied with a lot of determination. I gaped from one male to another, surprised. Their grip on my hand was strong and unyielding, so I was forced to remain here and watch this exchange between them. On one hand, I was shocked to see this side of Matty. He was always so cool and level-headed that I was mortified to see this level of aggression from him. On the other hand, I was beyond mystified to see Justin, who had openly rejected my feelings for him the other day, fighting so desperately for me. Talk about life throwing you a curveball. A surprising and an unexpected incident. "She is not yours," Mateo refused, taking a step forward. "How do you know she is not mine?" Justin demanded, stepping forward as well. Right now, their noses were literally touching as they stared into each other's eyes. Hazel eyes glistening with a hint of firelight, gazing into smoking grey eyes that swirled with a storm. "Stand down, Justin. My wolf recognized her as mine," Matoe growled, showing that his wolf had begun to take control. "So did mine," Justin spat back, his eyes flickering from grey to a bright blue, as his wolf started to shift to the fore. Tension filled the air and malevolence permeated the atmosphere. Any minute now and a fight would erupt between them. Anxiety crawled up and down my skin as my chest tightened. Please, someone, stop them before they exchange blows because of me. Yet, everyone was silent watching the scene play out before them. Deciding that I had to be the one to do something, I cleared my throat and was about to speak when the orator spoke over the microphone. "Attention, attention all!" The orator began, trying to diffuse the tension. Mateo and Justin snapped their heads to him, distracted for a minute. "We have a very rare and uncommon situation happening tonight," the orator went on, "it appears Nivia Randolph has been claimed by two mates, which I must say is a daunting situation at best and a catastrophe at worst." Yes, I could agree with him. It was a catastrophe. When others couldn't get one, I was saddled with two, which meant I had just robbed someone else of a chance at getting a mate. All the more reasons for everyone to find me strange. The likes of Claire would hate me even more and the others would avoid me, thinking I had to be bad luck to take from others what could have been theirs. The orator scrubbed at his chin, seeming flustered by this situation. "I would like to invite Alpha Jaxon, Principal of the academy, to the stage, to make a decision on this matter," the orator announced. As we all waited for Alpha Jaxon, Justin's father to come on stage, I felt my stomach churn at what decision he might take. At this point, I was nervous and confused. I hated being in the spotlight, I preferred to blend in rather than to stand out. A habit I had imbibed after many years of being invisible to the world. I saw Alpha Jaxon come on stage and receive the microphone from the orator. I took in a deep breath even as I felt both Mateo and Justin hold their breaths beside me. Even the crowd around us seemed to be holding their breaths as the place grew eerily still and quiet. What would he say? "This is truly a confusing situation because both boys are being led by the instincts of their wolves and claim that she is their fated mate. Usually, the female would confirm the bond if her wolf is present with her, but as we all know, Nivia is yet to receive the spirit of the wolf." Alpha Jaxon paused, then went on, "My decision is..." he turned over and faced me directly. Gosh, I was so anxious that I could feel my body tremble. "My decision is that Nivia Randolph picks one from the two of them," Alpha Jaxon finished his speech with a flourish. Everyone's shoulders sagged in relief, including mine. I could see people in the audience nod in agreement with his decision. However, my relief was short-lived when I realized the responsibility he had just placed on my shoulders. I gazed up and found Mateo looking at me with a plea in his eyes that said; 'Pick me, Nivia. I am your friend and your best choice.' Meanwhile, Justin was staring down at me with an intense look that whispered; 'I know you want me, here is your chance to have me.' I managed to drag my gaze from their faces and looked at the crowd who were now speculating among themselves: "Who will she pick?" I opened my mouth... Speechless, I closed it back. Swallowing thickly, I opened my mouth for the second time and I saw Mateo and Justin slightly lean towards me, anticipating my answer. "I choose ..."Nivia's POVI fell out of the silver light and hit the ground hard.Cold marble under my palms. The smell of old wood. The soft yellow light of the beams above me. I lifted my head. The Lab.I was on the floor of the old Science Lab at Oakwood Academy. For a second, I didn't believe it. My mind couldn't hold the shift between the jungle and the confined building. My hands were shaking. My throat tasted like salt from crying in the cave.Mateo landed beside me with a low groan. Claire tumbled out next, sprawling on her back, her hair a wild tangle across her face. Justin came through last. He landed on his feet, staggered, then went still. The silver door in the air behind him closed with a soft snap. The laboratory was warm. Too warm after weeks of jungle air.I smiled, grinning from ear to ear.We made it. We were back, at last!"You look terrible." A voice spoke up.It was calm. Familiar. My head snapped up.Alpha Jaxon stood at the laboratory's door in a crisp white shirt with the
Justin's POVNivia knelt at the edge of the stone ring with her palm on the floor. Her hair had fallen forward and I couldn't see her face. Her shoulders shook once, and I felt that shake somewhere behind my chest before I remembered I didn't want to feel it right now.The mate bond didn't care what I wanted.I hated that. The gash on my forehead throbbed with every heartbeat. My ribs felt bruised from where the creature had knocked me down. None of that hurt as much as looking at the small curve of her spine and knowing where my hands used to fit against it.Mateo was crouched in front of her with his hand on her shoulder. His shirt was dark with dried blood. He was murmuring something to her I couldn't hear. The image slammed into me before I could stop it. Nivia in the moss. Mateo's mouth against her throat. Her fingers curled into his hair. My knuckles had cracked so loud last night I was surprised the whole forest hadn't heard.I looked away."Get up," I said, and my voice came o
Nivia's POVDawn came slowly. The silver dome around us faded on its own once the creatures stopped clawing at it and left. One moment it was there, thick and glowing, and the next it was gone. My hands dropped to my sides and I nearly dropped with them.Mateo caught me by the waist before I could hit the ground."Easy," he whispered. "I've got you."His shoulder was bleeding through his shirt. He was holding me anyway.Justin stood a few feet away with his palm pressed to the gash on his forehead. His grey eyes had been on me since the light faded, but he had not spoken a single word.Claire sat in the dirt with her arms wrapped around her knees, watching me the way you watch something you don't understand. Her mouth was pressed into a thin line.None of them was looking at me the same way they had yesterday."What was that?" Claire finally whispered."I don't know.""You have to know, Nivia. That came out of your hands.""I don't know, Claire." My voice cracked. "We were in danger.
Nivia's POV The noise started in my head like a low buzz. It came from inside me, like a wire pulled tight behind my ribs, vibrating with a warning I couldn't shape into words. My eyes flew open. The tent was dark. The kind of dark you only get in the middle of the night when the fire has almost gone out. Above me, the woven leaves of the roof rustled softly, but there was no wind. Mateo's arm was heavy around my waist. His breath was warm against my hair. Slow. Steady. He was deep asleep. I looked down at my body. My shirt was back on. So was my skirt. My boots were placed neatly beside my head. He'd carried me back. He'd dressed me before he brought me here. Something soft cracked inside me at the thought. The buzz in my head sharpened though, and I couldn't hold onto softness right now. On the other side of the tent, Claire was curled up in a tight ball under a blanket, her back to me. Her breathing was slow. Still asleep. My eyes scanned the tent. Justin's sle
Mateo's POVThe moment her lips touched mine. Fireworks exploded in my head. This wasn't like our first kiss against the tree. Or the second one in the shelter during the rain. This was different. It was softer, slower, like she meant it this time.My hand slid into her hair and I kissed her back. Gentle at first, then deeper as she opened her mouth against mine. She tasted like salt from her tears. Her hand slid down my chest and gripped the fabric of my shirt.I pulled back just enough to breathe."Niv, are you sure? Because if you're not, I'll stop right now and we'll just sit here. I mean that."She looked at me. "I don't want to think anymore, Matty. I want to feel something that's just mine. Something I chose.""You choosing me?""Right now, yes." Her voice trembled but her eyes were steady."Is it because he hurt you?" I searched her eyes."No," she shook her head. "it's because I want you." The words felt like a dream. I knew she was making this choice just for tonight. But
Mateo's POVI watched her walk into the trees.Justin's voice came from behind me, low and tight. "Let her breathe, Mateo. She needs space.""Yeah."I nodded. I meant it in the moment. She did need space. And Justin was standing there with Claire's tears still drying on his shoulder, so who was I to argue with the great Alpha's son about what Nivia needed.I stood there for a solid ten seconds. Watching the spot where the trees had swallowed her up.Then I walked after her.I found her sitting against a fallen log, arms wrapped around her knees, her forehead pressed to them. She was crying quietly, the kind that shook her shoulders and made no sound at all.I sat down beside her in the dirt, close enough that our shoulders touched. She didn't look up. I didn't say anything. Sometimes people needed to be reached for, and sometimes they needed you to just sit there and let them come to you when they were ready.I waited. After a few minutes, she wiped her face with the back of her wris
Nivia POV. "I wish we had marshmallows with us to roast over the fire; it would have completed the entire camping feel," Austin said, gazing at the cackling flame. Somehow, the fire had picked up, turning into a real blaze after a while. "Is no one interested in playing the game?" Kyle asked when

Rachel POV.Squaring my shoulders, I decided to let go of my morality and please my mate.I stood up from the rock and began unbuttoning my jacket."What are you doing?" He asked, even as his eyes followed my hands."I'm giving you what you want, baby," I cooed as I shrugged out of my jacket.Dropp
