Zara’s pov

The investor's hand was still in the air when I decided that I was done.

“Say that again,” I said quietly.

I was trying so hard not to get out of character because this man was crossing many lines and even though this was the last investor on the list that has decided to have a meeting with me, I’d rather slit my throat than have anything to do with him.

“I said, funding doesn’t come for free. Not in this world and clearly not for someone like you.” He said as he leaned back on his chair, smirking now.

Someone like you.

That phrase landed heavier than anything else in the room.

The restaurant around us kept pretending not to hear—soft music, expensive laughter, the gentle clink of glasses from people who didn’t know their lives were falling apart in real time.

Mine was already falling apart.

Three years.

Three good years of building a company from nothing but stubbornness and broken sleep. Three years of telling myself I didn’t need anyone’s  approval. And now I’m sitting across a man who thought all of that could be traded for one night.

He slid a black card towards me like it meant something.

“I have booked a room for us in one of the best hotels. Spend the night with me and I’ll sign the paperwork before you wake up in the morning.” He said it so casually.

For a second I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You look like you haven’t been laid in a long time. And I promise you that when I’m done with you, you will want to see me again.”

For Christ's sake, where do these men come from?

This man should be in her 70’s and he thinks he can satisfy me sexually? Someone that wouldn’t even last a minute.

I stared at the card and then at him. Then at the life I had worked hard for suddenly narrowing into something small and humiliating.

It wasn’t even anger that came first. It was disbelief.

“You think that’s how this works?” I asked softly.

“That’s how it always works.” He said.

That was when something inside me went very still. Like a door closing.

I pushed back my chair.

The sound scraped through the room louder than it should have.

His smile faded slightly.

“Sit down,” he said, losing patience now. “Don’t turn this into a scene.”

A scene.

I almost laughed at that. Because I wasn't the one turning this into anything.

I stood anyway and for a split second everything paused. Even the air felt like it was waiting.

Then my hand moved before I could think.

The slap landed harder than expected.

The sound cracked through the restaurant like glass breaking.

His head turned sharply to the side. A fork dropped somewhere behind me. A chair shifted. And suddenly I was aware of every single eye in the room. Watching, measuring, judging.

My fingers burned immediately, but I didn’t lower my hand. I think that was the moment I realized that I wasn't scared anymore. Just tired.

He turned back slowly. There was a red mark forming on his cheeks. For a moment he said nothing.

Then he smiled. That slow kind of smile that never meant anything good.

“You just made a very expensive mistake,” he said quietly.

“No,” I said. “I just made a necessary one.”

I picked up my folder and walked away before my legs could start shaking.

———

The air outside felt like punishment.

Cold. Sharp. Alive.

Rain was falling heavily now, turning the city into blurred lights and reflections I could focus on. I stood there for a second long, clutching my folder against my chest like it could hold everything together for me. My breath came unevenly. Not from fear from him but from what came next.

Because I knew that men like that didn’t lose politely. They destroyed things on their way out.

A black car sat near the curb, engine running quietly. I didn’t notice it at first. I was too busy trying not to fall apart in public. Inside the car, someone was watching me.

Rain splashed against the edge of my heels as I stepped closer to the road to look for a cab I could barely afford.

A sharp breath left my lips as I tried to steady myself. The cold wasn’t helping and if I had known that the rain was going to pour down today, I would have won something less revealing.

Then I heard it.

A door closing.

It was not from the restaurant. But from the car black car that has been at the side of the road.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Calm. Expensive suit untouched by the rain b like it didn’t dare reach him.

He didn’t come closer. Just looked at me. Like he was studying something he had been searching for. He whispers something to the man staring close to him. I presume he was his body guard because of the body language.

One of the men walked towards me holding an umbrella.

“Where are you going to ma’am?”

“How is that your business?” I replied.

“My boss wants to take you wherever you are going.”

I obviously didn’t have money for a cab back home and even if I was going to be kidnapped it was going to be a plus for me because I have no money to pay for my rent.

I let out a breath and walked to the car. The man was standing at the door of the car looking straight at me and smiling like he just won a lottery.

It’s this how my life is going to end? I said to myself.

He opened the car door and I stepped inside. The car was more luxurious on the inside than it looks on the outside. The leather seats were more comfortable than anything else I have ever sat on.

The man turned round the car to open the other door and entered the car.

He looked at me again

“You are the one I have been looking for,” he said with a smile.

River I pulled the car to a smooth stop beneath the covered entrance of Maison Étoile. Before I could step out, a valet was already approaching. I handed him the keys without a word before walking around the front of the car. Zara had just opened her door when I reached her. She looked up the building, her gaze slowly taking in the understated elegance of the boutique. There were no oversized logos or glittering displays demanding attention. “You ready?” I asked She smiled. “Of course.” The glass doors slid open before we even got to them. A woman dressed in a tailored back suit stepped forward, her smile warm but impeccably professional. “Good afternoon, Mr. Cassian.” I inclined my head. “Good afternoon.” “We’ve been eagerly waiting for your arrival.” She stepped aside, gesturing us inside. “Everything has been prepared exactly the way you requested.”The boutique was silent. No customers browsed the display. No consultants hurried between appointments. Zara slowed behi

River The penthouse was unusually quiet when I got home. I loosened my tie as I walked through the living room, instinctive glancing towards the kitchen. Empty. I checked the dining area. Still empty. Her bedroom door was slightly open, the lights were switched off. She was at home. I frowned almost imperceptibly. Normally, by this hour, she would either be working on her laptop, making dinner, or talking to herself while wandering around the apartment. Somehow, in the space of weeks, that had become the new normal. Today was just silent. Different even. I set my keys on the console table and slipped my phone from my pocket. No messages. For a brief moment I simply stood there. She was an adult and she had a driver. So she was safe. There was no need for me to worry. I looked at my watch. Nine-thirty. Before I could talk myself out of it, I tapped her contact. The phone rang twice. “Hello?” Zara answered, her voice as bright as ever. “Where are you?” A beat of silenc

Zara The drive into the city’s luxury district took a little over twenty minutes. As the Mercedes slowed to a stop, I found myself staring through the tinted window. Every storefront looked like something out of a magazine. Glass facades starched towards the sky, reflecting the afternoon sun. Luxury cars lined the street, valets moved effortlessly from one vehicle to another, and elegantly dressed shoppers wandered from one boutique to the next carrying glossy shopping bags with names I had only seen online. Gregory stepped out first and opened my door.“I’ll be here whenever you are ready.” I smiled. “Thank you.” Eliza the climbed out beside me and immediately slipped her hand through mine. “You look nervous.” “I’m not nervous.” She looked at me knowingly. “You have been looking around since we got here.” “I’ve never been here before.” “Exactly.” She smiled. “So today, we are fixing that.” Before I could protest, she was already leading me towards the first boutique.

Zara By the end of the week, I had settled into my normal routine. River woke up and went to work most mornings before I did. I worked from the penthouse, and it was very exhausting, I missed my normal life and my best friend. And find myself talking to Herbert whenever I needed a break. Living with River wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d imagined. He was quiet and unpredictable. Organized to an almost frightening degree. But also considerate in ways he probably didn’t even realize. The times I didn’t abide by the rules, he doesn’t complain. He simply just does it. I want to go to the office today and probably have lunch at my favorite spot. I put on a pair of tennis skirts with a crop pink sweater, my pink sneakers and a packed my hair into a bun. A few moments later, the elevator doors opened onto the lobby. A gentleman I what looks like his early fifties stepped inside just as I stepped out. He paused and offered a warm smile. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” “I don’

River By the time the last board member walked out of the conference room, I felt every minute of the day settle heavily across my shoulders. “Tomorrow at nine, you have the Hendersonville meeting,” my assistant reminded me as she handed over a folder. “I know.” “And your lunch with the Singapore investors.” “I know.” “And your interview with—““I know.”She offered me an apologetic smile before stepping aside. The office slowly emptied around me. Outside the floor to ceiling windows, the city had begun to glow beneath the fading evening sky. Headlights stretched endlessly along the roads below, weaving through traffic like ribbons of light. I loosened my tie as I walked towards the elevator. Oliver caught up with me just before the door closed.“Tough day.” “They usually are.” He grinned. “At least you’ve got something waiting at home now.” I looked at him. He raised both hands.” I’m just saying.” The elevator door slid shut. A few minutes later, I was behind the wh

Zara The smell of fresh linen and the unfamiliar softness of the mattress was the first reminders that I wasn’t in my apartment anymore. I blinked sleep from my eyes and stared at the ceiling. For a brief moment I did not remember where I was until I bent my head to look out the window. Then I remembered I lived in a penthouse. A quiet sigh escaped me as I sat up, pushing the duvet aside m. Sunlight poured through the windows, painting golden streaks across the wooden floor. Today was officially my first day living here. After showering and changing, into a pair of jean shorts and an oversized cream sweater, I tie my hair into a loose ponytail before leaving my room. The hallway was silent. I wondered if River was awake or still asleep. As I reached the kitchen, something caught my attention. A single sheet of paper rested neatly on the marble island. Beside it lay a matte black card like the one he gave me last night. Curiosity got the better part of me. I walked over an
