What do I want?

Zara

“Promise me you are not going to that place alone.”

My best friend's voice echoed through my phone speaker as I stood in the kitchen, staring at nothing in particular. The morning felt too bright for how heavy my thoughts were.

“There is no one to come with me, you are far away and you know I don’t like asking people for help.” I said

“What about Alex?” She asked

Alex was one of the diligent people in the company and he has been hitting on me for years. But I can’t be with someone who earns less money than I do.

“You know I don’t want to be indebted to him. Besides I have told you everything and the man didn’t look scary. If for anything, he actually looked cute and his smile? Oh my god, it’s to die for.”

“And that’s why I’m panicking.” She shot back. “That’s more reasons why I should panic. A stranger is a stranger. He gives you his card and suddenly you are going to his office? Do you hear yourself?”

I exhaled slowly, putting down my shoe to hit the floor.

“I don’t really have a choice,” I say, my voice very calm now.

That made her go quiet for a second. And I hated that silence. Because it meant she understood…even when she didn’t want to.

“What did he say to you again?” She asked

“He said I was the one he had been looking for.” I answered

Which doesn’t even make sense. He didn’t say anything after. The driver just asked for my address and took me to my house.

All he did was stretch out his card to me and smiled. What the hell was he smiling for??

“This is how people end up in crime documentaries, you know that right?”

“I know. But doing nothing is worse.”

They shut her up completely

I picked up the card and looked at it.

Black. Thick. Heavy

Oliver Montague.

The company was collapsing. Debt was swallowing everything. Doors were closing faster than we could knock them.

“Just…be careful,” she said finally. Her voice wasn’t loud anymore, just scared.

“I will.”

I hung up before she could say anything else. Because if I stayed on that call any longer I might actually lose the courage to leave.

I picked up my shoe and put it on. I was wearing a pair of blue  jeans and a white tank top with a burgundy leather jacket to match my bag. I looked at the mirror and decided to tie my hair in a ponytail.

———

The drive was longer than it should have.

Every street I passed looked like it was leading me somewhere I didn’t fully understand. Every turn felt like a quiet warning and I was ignoring it on purpose. My phone stayed in my hands the entire time just in case I needed to run.

When the car finally stopped, I looked up and my stomach tightened. The building didn’t look like an office. It looked like power pretending to be architecture.

Glass stretched too high reflecting the sky like it owned it. The name at the top was sharp and clean.

Cassian Holdings.

Which was different from what was in the card.

People moved in and out with purpose. Not chaos—control. Even the air around the place felt structured. Like nothing unplanned was allowed inside.

I swallowed

I picked up my phone and sent a text message to my best friend.

I’m here now. Wish me luck.  XOXO

——-

inside, everything felt too polished. The floors were so reflective I could see myself in them—smaller than I felt. The air was cold enough to swallow my thoughts.

People glanced at me and looked away. Like I wasn’t important enough to hold their attention. I walked to the reception desk, forcing my voice to stay steady.

“Good morning,” I said.

The receptionist looked up slowly.

“Yes?”

“I have an appointment with Oliver Montague.”

Her fingers paused over her keyboard just a little too long. Her expression changed just slightly before she nodded.

“Your name?”

“Zara Edwards.”

She typed once and then again.

“Top floor,” she said. “He’s expecting you.”

——

The elevator door closed with a soft sound that felt too final.

Floor numbers rose slowly.

1….7…14…23…..

Each number felt like a step away from the life I use to understand. By the time I reached the top floor my palms were already slightly damped.

The elevator door opened and I stopped at a walkway. Very clean and quiet. A woman at the desk stood as soon as she saw me.

“You can go in,” she said.

Like she has been waiting for me.

I walked forward slowly. The doors to the office were slightly opened. I pushed slowly and stepped inside.

He was sitting by the window, not behind the desk. Just sitting there like the city outside mattered more than anything inside.

When I entered, he turned slowly and I felt it immediately. That pressure. The kind that doesn’t need to be loud to be dangerous.

“You are here.” He said finally with a smile.

“I came because you asked.” I said

“Yes,” he said. “You did.”

He didn’t move immediately. He just watched me.

“Sit.” He said finally

I hesitated for half a second before lowering myself into the chair opposite him. The space between us felt too intentional, like it had been measured. For a moment, neither of us spoke. He sat down finally on his chair and leaned forward.

“What do you want right now?” He asked

I blinked. My brain didn’t even process the question properly at first.

“What?”

“You heard me,” he said. “What do you want right now? Anything. Just make it and I’ll make it happen.”

I stared at him. This wasn’t  business and neither was it a negotiation. It was something else entirely. His gaze did not leave mine. His expression was stern and something in my chest tightened because of that.

“What do you want?” He asked again.

Zara Elizabeth’s birthday was apparently a national holiday. At least that was the only explanation I could come up with for the number of flowers and gift boxes covering her office desk. “What on earth is going on here?”She turned towards me. “That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.” “Are you seeing someone and I’m not aware?” “No.” “Lizzy come on, these gifts would not come from someone you don’t know. So, who sent all these?” “I have no idea. I came into the office and found my desk looking like this and no one seems to know who delivered them.” “Someone clearly wants your attention.” I picked up the card attached to the largest bouquet. There was no name in front, only a happy birthday message. I opened the card and found a write up inside. Happy birthday to the woman who deserves the world. I hope you enjoy your gifts and I can’t wait to see you tonight. Mr. OI looked at Elizabeth slowly. “He says he can’t wait to see you tonight.” “Really?” “Don’t do that with m

River I sat in the conference room, listening as the project manager went through the revised figures of the upcoming quarter. “Reduce the projected expenditure by eight percent. And I want the revised proposal on my desk by Thursday. If there are any issues with the timeline, address them now instead of waiting until last minute.” “Understood, sir.” “Good. That’s will be all.” I stood up and went straight to my office. I had barely settled in my chair when the door opened. “Just the person I wanted to see.” I set my pen down. “Where have you been?” “Excuse me?” “You heard me. You are rarely in your office.” “I didn’t realize I had to drop a report on my daily movements.” He said taking a glass and pouring himself some whiskey. “I’ve been here and there, handling a few things. You know, living my life. Unlike you who like to bury yourself in work.” “Well, you are very correct.” “Thank you.” “That aside, there’s something I need to discuss with you and I don’t need you t

Zara By the time dessert was cleared, I was more than ready to leave. Dinner had been an experience and I had spent most of the evening choosing my words carefully. I was beginning to understand why River preferred keeping his distance from people. He pushed his chair back and stood up. “Excuse me. I need to take this call.” How mother nodded, while Alfred immediately followed him before he could leave. I watched him go, wondering how long he intended to leave me to fend for myself. “Zara.” I turned to find Elsa looking at me. “Yes?” “Come with me. I’d like to take you on a tour around the house.” I hesitated. “Oh, that’s all right. You don’t have to do that.” “I know I don’t have to, but I want to.” I glanced towards the doorway River had disappeared into. “Don’t tell me you are afraid of being alone with me.” “No, of course not.” “Good. Then come along, I’ll make it quick.” I remained seated. She sighed dramatically. “Honestly, Zara, I’m not going to bite you or p

Zara Dinner continued but I was beginning to suspect that Margaret had made it her personal mission to make me uncomfortable. Everytime I looked up from my plate, I caught her staring at me. Sometimes, she would quickly joy look away. Other times, she would hold my gaze for a moment before returning to her food. I had no idea what she was looking for, but I hope she wouldn’t find out. I was just reaching for my glass when River’s mother spoke. “So, Zara, how did you meet River?” My hand paused halfway way to the glass. I looked at her wondering whether I had heard correctly. “Sorry?” “How did you meet my son? She repeated, her eyes fixed on me. “I’ve been curious about that.” That was a problem. I wasn’t exactly sure of the story to tell them because I have a lot in my head and I was very well prepared for this. I glanced at River. His expression was calm. He opened his mouth to speak but his mother stopped him before he could say anything. “Let the girl answer.” I too

Zara The car pulled up to the Cassian family residence, and I turned towards the window, taking in the enormous building. The house was impressive, with tall windows, elegant columns. And a wide suitcase leading to the front entrance. Warm lights illuminated the exterior, while the carefully trimmed hedges and perfectly arranged flowers gave the grounds an almost unreal appearance. I had grown up in a house of similar grandeur, so the sight of a sprawling residence with expensive furnishing and an army of staff wasn’t new to me. If anything, it brought back memories that I wouldn’t want to entertain tonight.“Ready?” River asked. “Do I have a choice?” “You could stay in the car.” “Very funny.” He stepped out first, then came around to my side and opened the door for me. I accepted his offered hand and climbed out, smoothing the front of my dress. We walked to the entrance together. He didn’t let go of my hand surprisingly. Before we could reach the front door, it opened from

Zara I stared at my phone, listening to the familiar voice on the other end. “Someone knows about me,” I whispered. “I don’t know how much she knows, but she knows enough to scare me.” “Calm down. You are getting ahead of yourself.” “How am I supposed to calm down? I spent years believing I could live without looking over my shoulders, and now someone has suddenly appeared, reminding me of everything I have been trying to forget.” “I understand that you are frightened, but you need to think clearly. I’ve been keeping a close watch of him through one of his guards. And from what I can see, he isn’t making any moves to find you.” “You can’t be sure of that.” “No, I can’t. But if he were actively looking for you, I would have noticed something by now.” I pressed my free hand against my forehead. “I didn’t think I would be found so soon. It’s just been four years. I haven’t gotten to where I want to be to be able to fight him. I thought I had more time.” “You still have time. No
