Chapter 6

Annelise’s POV

"Mrs. Harrington, are you with us?" a voice broke through my grogginess as I slowly opened my eyes, trying to focus on the unfamiliar surroundings.

"What happened to me, doc?" I asked, my head throbbing badly. I could deduce that was the doctor with the white coat and the stethoscope around his neck.

The doctor leaned over me, checking my vitals. "You fainted during your wedding ceremony. But that's not the only thing you need to know," he said, handing over the test results to me.

My eyes widened as I opened and read the content of the test results with shaky hands. Without even reading the contents of the result, I could feel that it wasn't something nice.

On reading it, however, I was met with the biggest shock of my life.

"What is this?" I gasped.

"This is not possible," I said to the doctor, looking up to him with trembling lips.

This has to be a joke; there's no way that is possible. I hadn't even had sex with anyone.

My hazy mind must have made me forget that I had one with someone I'm still trying to remember two weeks ago.

“This isn't possible," I kept repeating the words like a mantra.

That headache I was feeling beforehand multiplied in multiple folds. I can't seem to think straight anymore; only one word kept appearing in my mind: Ken.

He was the one I woke up with the day I lost my virginity, even dressed in his shirt! What kind of messed up life is mine?!

I heard the door open and close, which made me realize that the doctor had only just left the room, leaving me alone to myself.

The door opened again; I was on the verge of yelling at whoever it was to leave me alone. I don't just want to see anyone or talk to anyone right now.

I hate my life, my existence, hate my father with every fiber of my being.

“Ma'am, we need to leave now," I heard a strange voice say.

I looked up to see a familiar yet strange face.

"Who are you?" My voice sounded so strange. It was dry and cracky.

“I’m the head of security for Mr. Ethan,” he replied.

Right, my husband. Even thinking of him made a certain kind of fear arise in me.

I couldn't help but picture his face, that scowl that seemed to be his permanent expression came to my mind.

Right there and then, I decided to keep this news a secret for now.

I walked out of the hospital and entered the waiting black SUV with the bodyguard.

“Where are we going?" I asked the driver, sitting in the back seat, just observing the view around us as the car sped on the smooth road.

“Mr. Ethan's mansion," he sounded so professional.

I couldn't help but be relieved that Ethan was not present at the hospital.

If he had been, the secret would have been revealed, and there was no telling what would happen to me.

Tears streamed down my face as I clutched the test results in my trembling hands. "You're two weeks pregnant," the doctor's words echoed in my mind.

But how was that even possible?

I hadn't engaged in any sex with Ethan yet, and I couldn't recall any intimate moments with Ken, except for the fact that I woke up next to him in bed two weeks ago.

As soon as we arrived at the mansion, I tucked the test results into my sleeve, hoping to keep them hidden until I find the courage to do another test in a different hospital. Perhaps it was manipulated.

"Ma'am, This is the way to the master's bedroom," the nanny said, respectfully bowing her head as she gestured toward the master's bedroom, indicating the way.

How did I not notice that I was already in the mansion? It feels as though my body was here, but my mind isn't.

I found the gesture hard to accept, but I know that as the newest bride in the Harrington's family, I would have to get used to it.

I replied with a polite "Thank you" before quietly climbing the stairs.

As I climbed the stairs, the mansion's beauty was apparent, but my mind was too preoccupied to take in the beauty of it.

When I reached the master bedroom, where my cold and intimidating husband should have been awaiting me, a familiar voice stopped me in my tracks.

I would have ignored it, but the voice was so loud and menacing to be ignored.

I followed the voice, drawn in by the anger and resentment in its tone. I approached the room, and the voice grew louder, filled with venomous words.

"I didn't tell you to oversee my business, just for you to fool around with my wealth," the voice said with a sneer.

"Now you're planning on living your life? I own it, fool. I own you," the voice continued, its fury escalating.

I couldn't resist her curiosity and peeped through the slightly open door, inching closer to get a better look. I could see Ethan and Ken in the room, and it was clear that they were in the midst of a heated argument.

Ethan stood his ground, refusing to be cowed by Ken's bullying tactics. "You do not own my life, Ken. I've served you as a brother should," he said firmly.

"Why don't you just run away like you always do? Show the world who you really are. I bet you don't have the guts, you bastard," Ethan added, his tone hardening as he smiled sheepishly at Ken while puffing a tobacco.

Ken was taken aback. "How dare you?" he spat, his anger boiled over, and he lashed out at Ethan, striking him across the face. "You've got some nerve, huh?"

I watched in shock and horror as Ken pulled out a gun and pointed it at Ethan's skull, "You'll do as I say as your older brother, unless you want to dig your own grave." Ethan then answered with a word that sounded like he could do his worst.

I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. I've never seen a gun before, and the sight of it frightened me a lot. In an attempt to scramble off, I accidentally hit my head on the door, and it swung open, revealing my presence.

Holy shit! I just blew my cover.
