LOGINThe three women surrounded Vanessa, scrutinizing and probing, their gazes a mix of shock. They were all familiar faces, but three years had passed, and they had all changed.
Back then, when she was driven away, the Voss family had given her father money, entrusting him to take good care of her.
They had assumed Vanessa had been living well all these years, but they never expected her to end up looking like this.
"Isn't this Miss Voss?" A woman's voice was sharp, mocking in a slow, deliberate tone, before she changed her tune. "Ugh, never mind, I forgot, the one in front of us is just a fake."
After a burst of laughter, another woman chimed in.
"What, did you come looking for Bart, realizing that you can't seduce Julian looking like this, so you're settling for second best?"
"Freda, what are you saying? Looking like her, even hooking up with Bart is a stretch."
"You're reminding me, she's a shameless hussy. Back then, Julian didn't want her, so she hired someone to kidnap Ivy Solace, causing her death..." Freda Moore glared at Vanessa, as if wanting to gouge her eyes out, while loudly proclaiming, "How dare you still be alive?"
Vanessa's lips trembled, a flicker of fear crossing her dim eyes. Julian had choked her neck back then, asking her the same question.
She had cried and said it wasn't her, that she was a victim too.
Julian didn't believe it.
No one believed it.
In court, the kidnappers accused her, her parents suspected her, the lawyer presented irrefutable evidence, and she couldn't defend herself. That was then, and it was still the same today.
"What's the matter, cat got your tongue?"
"Feeling guilty, are we?"
The wind blew rain inside, soaking half of her clothes. Standing in the cold wind, she accepted the accusations. "It's my fault, it's all my fault..."
The words stunned Freda and the others. Someone so arrogant was actually speaking to them so meekly.
Straightening her face, Freda chuckled. "So you know it's your fault now? Why didn't you admit it in court back then?"
Vanessa didn't argue. She was shoved a couple of times, her body falling into the rain, teetering.
Lacking her retaliation, the event lost its appeal. Julian extinguished his cigarette and was about to sit back down when the argument downstairs intensified. Provoked, perhaps, by Vanessa's submissive appearance, Freda raised her hand and slapped her.
Adrian immediately stood up straight, waiting for Vanessa's reaction, but she only covered her face, not moving. Freda grabbed her arm and pushed, and she rolled down the steps. The security guards at the clubhouse were alerted and rushed over.
Fortunately, the injuries weren't serious. A fall and a slap were much lighter than a living life.
Vanessa was drenched, cowering in the back seat of the car. Sitting beside her was Julian, one calm and indifferent, relaxed and detached, the other miserable and defeated, like a stray dog.
They seemed like people who shouldn't be in the same space at all.
There were towels in the car, but Julian didn't offer one to Vanessa. However, if she begged him, he might show some mercy.
Just like before, when she would tug on his perfectly tailored suit sleeve, cooing, "Julian, please help me, just this once..."
But he didn't know.
A plea for help that is not answered for a long time can make a person lose heart.
Even if she had another chance to gain sympathy, Vanessa would not speak again. Hitting a brick wall too many times hurts.
"Adrian went to find Bart. I'll take you back." Julian clarified his position, sitting on the same row as Vanessa, yet appearing miles apart.
Vanessa's tone was even more detached than his. "Actually... I can go back by myself."
So he had made a presumptuous offer?
The corners of Julian's mouth curved into a self-deprecating smile. "This is Adrian's request."
In other words, it wasn't that he wanted to meddle.
"I know."
Julian didn't look at her, but he could feel her face tilt up slightly, a faint gaze being cast toward him. Every word she spoke was with immense courage. "I know you don't want to see me again. In the past, I was ignorant and made many mistakes, causing you a lot of trouble. I won't make those mistakes again."
"Those mistakes?" Julian turned his head. "Meaning?"
Vanessa lowered her head again. "Liking you."
If this was said three years ago, Vanessa would have flipped the table in the next second and made a scene, causing chaos. But now, she would only smile.Julian foresaw his own cruelty, but he still had to say it."After marriage, our relationship will not change, that's for sure."He didn't even give her a chance to defend herself.Vanessa lowered her eyes, not knowing what she was thinking. Julian's tone was too cold, "And don't even think that someone will help you leave. You've seen what happened to Perry.""Why would I want to leave?"Vanessa's tone in her retort was not guilty, "I've had enough of the hard life, I think things are pretty good now."Julian didn't believe she really thought that way, "It better be what you truly think.""You really want to know what I'm truly thinking?"He only needed to nod to know, but Julian shook his head. The truth is never pleasant to hear. Him and Vanessa together was just mut
At the sound of it.Julian lazily lifted his eyes, giving Stacey Blain a glance."It's okay," Stacey didn't seem to mind.Perhaps with the appearance of Vanessa, the old master felt that she was a threat, which is why he was in such a hurry to find a marriage partner for Julian, and arranged this dinner party. Ostensibly and covertly, it was all about matchmaking. "Julian must be too tired from work lately. He's usually not like this. Why don't you take some time and go for a walk together?""I'm busy." This wasn't even a polite refusal. Julian's resistance was very strong. "Sorry, I have a lot of work to do. I really don't have time to accompany Miss Yi."Leaving the table first, Julian walked out of the restaurant. Jerry was waiting outside, handing him his gloves and opening the car door. Julian bent down to get in when the woman from the restaurant rushed out."Mr. Frost."Stacey carried her bag. She had a standard oval face, a be
Vanessa knew this very well, but to be proactive would seem too deliberate. She lowered her eyes, and the wind from outside the window blew in, causing her to cough a couple of times. The driver moved to close the window, but she quickly stopped him, "No, the wind isn't cold. It'll be spring soon."For her, winter was the hardest to endure, and so was summer. The feeling of standing under the scorching sun for an entire day was a lifelong nightmare. Compared to those hardships, losing her freedom wasn't much at all.As soon as she returned to Rosewood, Vanessa developed a fever and fainted in a daze, constantly muttering in her sleep. The housekeeper was the first to notify Julian. He rushed over upon receiving the news, his expression hurried as he entered. He tossed his coat to the housekeeper and hurried upstairs. "Why the sudden fever again? Her health has improved a lot recently, hasn't it?"With a nutritionist providing guidance and nutrition
Women are hard to please, especially women like Vanessa. The relationship that had finally eased up a bit was stiffened again by those few words.Julian blamed Cliff for this, and when he went back to the Frost family for dinner, he gave Cliff a hard time at the table. After the meal, Maria was so angry that her face turned pale. She went into her room and slammed the door shut, unable to help but burst into a torrent of abuse."Even if he doesn't acknowledge me as his stepmother, I'm still his aunt after all. How dare he speak to me like that? Does he even know the rules?" Maria patted her chest, gently calming her breath.Cliff smiled, his face expressionless, "Is this trivial matter worth your anger?""How is it not worth it?" Maria paced back and forth, "It's because you have such a good temper that he walks all over you.""I think it's a good thing that Julian is so angry."Leaning against the wall, Cliff held up a lighter and li
It was an acquaintance of Julian.Vanessa subconsciously stopped her movements, trying to hide herself as a wisp of air. Julian wasn't overly enthusiastic; he maintained a bland expression, and it was unclear if he even recognized the other person. "Hello, I'm having a meal and it's not convenient to catch up."Cliff walked over silently. "What a coincidence, I didn't expect Julian and Miss Harper to be alumni."Julian had made time specifically to dine with Vanessa, but was being interrupted. His gentlemanly demeanor was about to run out when Vanessa suddenly stood up. "I'm going to the restroom."She quickly went to the restroom and splashed cold water on her face. She felt uncomfortable in that atmosphere, as if she had been drawn into a power struggle. Just as she was catching her breath, a tissue was offered to her."Wipe it."Turning around, she met Harvey's gentle, watery eyes.Vanessa took the tissue and quickly wiped the water droplets from her face, mumbling, "Thank you.""A
He knew too well how to threaten her. There was no trick in the world more effective than holding someone's weakness. The call was about to go through when Vanessa's icy hand came over and pressed down on Julian's hand, "Don't...""Choose. Is it Dominic's life, or continue tutoring Harvey's niece? Your choice."Between the two, she shouldn't have hesitated. But if she yielded this time, there would be countless similar situations in the future. While she was contemplating, Julian had already made the call. The line connected quickly, and just as he was about to speak, his lips were blocked by warmth and softness. Vanessa awkwardly held his shoulders, her body stiff, her eyelashes drooping. Her other hand pressed down on Julian's phone. She tried to kiss him, using herself as bait, hoping to tempt Julian to soften his heart just once. She succeeded. No man could resist that kiss, not even Julian.Recently, Julian had been
