Lily

Naomi stayed for another hour, mostly just sitting on my bed while I finished packing. She kept asking questions about my summer classes and whether I’d be back before the fall semester, but I could tell she was really trying to figure out and fish out for more details.

The conversation with my parents went about as well as I’d expected. Mom cried a little, Dad looked confused and concerned, and they both tried to convince me that running away to Oregon wasn’t going to solve whatever I was going through. But in the end, they helped me pack my stuff into the car and drove me to the airport, probably because they figured I was going to college eventually anyway and at least this way they knew where I was going.

The flight to Oregon was the longest two hours of my life, mainly because I had nothing to distract me from thinking about how my new life would be. This is nothing like I have planned. But when I finally got to campus and saw the dorms, I felt something that might have b

The study group turned out to be one of those things that sounded better in theory than it actually was in practice. Ethan had managed to recruit about six people, but getting them all to show up at the same time was like herding cats. The actual attendance varied wildly depending on what else was happening on campus that week. There was Marcus, a business major who was genuinely terrible at calculus but brought really good snacks and tried hard enough that I didn’t mind explaining the same concept three times. Sarah from my dorm building would appear when she wasn’t working at the campus bookstore. A couple of Ethan’s track teammates showed up occasionally, clearly only there because they needed to pass the requirements to stay on the team.Jessica came to exactly three sessions before declaring that we were all way too serious about studying and she had better things to do with her Tuesday nights.“You guys act like this is life or death,” she said, packing up her barely-used textbo

The alcohol was starting to hit me a little, making everything feel slightly fuzzy around the edges. I looked at Ethan, who was sitting there looking genuinely uncomfortable and sorry, and I felt some of the anger drain out of me. He didn’t deserve to get his head bitten off for trying to be nice.“Sorry,” I said, my voice coming out quieter than before. “That was…. I didn’t mean to snap at you like that.”“No, it’s okay,” Ethan said quickly. “I shouldn’t have pushed.”He looked so genuinely apologetic that I felt bad for being such a bitch to him. Ethan had cheated on me, yeah, but that was months ago and had apologized over and over again.“How are your classes going?” I asked, trying to steer us back to safer territory. “Business administration, right?”“Yeah,. Not nearly as hardcore as what you’re doing. I don’t know how you handle three science courses at once.”“I like staying busy,” I said, which was the understatement of the century.“Busy is one thing, but hours a day in a l

LilyEthan was standing there with a red solo cup in his hand, looking exactly the same as he had the last time I saw him at graduation. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” I muttered.“What?” Naomi followed my gaze and then made a face. “Oh. Great. Your cheating douchebag ex-boyfriend. What are the odds?”“I thought he was going to Washington State for that sports program,” I said, trying to figure out if there was a way to get to the kitchen without walking past him. “He had that sports scholarship thing.”“Maybe he flunked out already,” Jessica suggested helpfully.Of course, because the universe apparently had it out for me, he chose that exact moment to look up and see me standing there. His face lit up with recognition, and he started making his way through the crowd toward us.“Lily! Holy shit, I can’t believe you’re here!”“Unfortunately, neither can I,” I said, but he either didn’t hear me or chose to ignore the sarcasm.“I tried calling you after graduation,” he said, and he a

LilyWhen I finished, I waited for Naomi to either pity me or laugh at how stupid I’d been. Instead, she was quiet for about ten seconds, and then she exploded.“That absolute cockwaffling piece of shit,” she said, and her voice was so full of rage that I almost jumped. “I hope his dick falls off and gets eaten by rabid squirrels.”I couldn’t help it. I started laughing, partly because “cockwaffling” was possibly the most creative insult I’d ever heard, and partly because it felt so good to have someone be angry on my behalf instead of just feeling sorry for me.“I thought you liked him,” I said, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. “You even had a crush on him before we started dating. I remember you being weird about it when I told you we were together.”Naomi’s face scrunched up like she’d tasted something disgusting. “That was just me being clueless with terrible taste in guys. And honestly? I was probably just jealous because you got the cute foster brother and I was stuck cr

Jessica tried to be friendly for the first few weeks, but I could tell I was wearing her down. She’d invite me to things and I’d find some excuse to say no, she’d ask if I wanted to get dinner together and I’d tell her I was swamped with lab work. Eventually she stopped trying, which was exactly what I’d been aiming for, but it still made me feel like complete garbage.“When’s the last time you ate something that wasn’t from a vending machine?” she asked one night when I came back to the room at almost midnight, carrying an armload of textbooks and a bag of chips I’d grabbed from the machine in the lobby.“I eat,” I said, which was technically true.“Real food, Lily. When’s the last time you sat down and ate an actual meal?”I couldn’t remember, which probably proved her point better than any argument she could make, but I wasn’t about to hand her that victory.“I’m fine,” I said instead dropping my books on my desk with more force than necessary.Jessica went quiet for a few minutes,
