Lucas's POV.

I didn't sleep and neither of us could sleep. By morning, the house looked exactly the same. That was the strangest part of it all.

The curtains were still hanging by the windows.

The flower vase Laura liked was still sitting on the dining table. Zara's slippers were still beside the stairs.

Nothing looked broken except the small crack around Zara's bedroom lock.

But I couldn't look at the house the same way anymore.

That was the strangest part of it all.The curtains were still hanging by the windows. The flower vase Laura liked was still sitting on the dining table. Zara's slippers were still beside the stairs.Nothing looked broken except the small crack around Zara's bedroom lock. But I couldn't look at the house the same way anymore.I stood in the security room with my arms folded while the footage played again.9:05 p.m.The false emergency alert came through.9:06.The guards moved toward the front gate.9:07.The side access opened.9:07 and thirty seconds.A figure appeared on the camera.I leaned forward.“Stop.”The technician froze the footage.“Zoom in.”The image enlarged. The person wore dark clothing.A hood covered most of his face.I stared at him.“Can you enhance it?”“We're trying.”The image became slightly clearer. Not enough. The man looked toward the camera. Then he w

Zara's POV.I woke up to the sound of footsteps. At first, I didn't move. I lay beneath my blanket, staring at the ceiling while the sound came again. The footsteps were slow and heavy. It felt like someone was walking down the hallway. I grabbed my phone and I saw that the time was 2:17 a.m.Everyone should have been asleep by that time. It wasn't the time for people to be awake. Then I heard a door open downstairs. My heart started beating faster. I sat up and another sound followed.A man's voice.I couldn't make out the words.I slipped out of bed and walked toward my bedroom door. Before I reached it, my phone vibrated.I jumped. It was Dad.**Don't leave your room.**I stared at the message.I typed back.**What's happening?**His reply came almost immediately.**Stay inside. Lock your door.**I got up and pushed the lock into place. Then I stood there.Waiting.A few seconds passed.Nothing.I walked back to my bed.Another vibration.**Do not open the door for anyone unless it

Zara's POV.I woke up because someone was shouting. At first, I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.Another voice came from downstairs.“Check the side corridor!”I sat up instantly. My heart started beating faster.I listened to the footsteps, they were several of them. Then utter silence consumed the air.I reached for my phone. There were three missed calls from Dad.I called him back and he answered immediately.“Zara?”“Yes.”“Lock your door.” he instructed and I got off the bed.“What happened?”“Do exactly what I'm telling you to do.”“Dad—”“Lock the door.”I pushed the lock into place.“It's locked.”“Stay inside.”“Why?”“We had a security breach.”My stomach dropped.“What?”“Someone got into the property.”I couldn't speak.“Dad?”“I'm coming to you.”I heard movement on his end.“Don't leave your room.”The call ended.I stared at the door.Someone had gotten inside. Our house. The place where we were supposed to be safe.I walked backward

Lucas's POV.The alarm on my phone went off at exactly 9:05 p.m. I was sitting on the edge of the bed, going through the security reports from earlier that day.Laura was already asleep, or at least I thought she was. She shifted beneath the blanket when the sound came from my phone. I picked it up.**SECURITY ALERT — MEDICAL EMERGENCY AT FRONT GATE.**For a second, I didn't move. I was displeased. Then I opened the security application. The camera feed showed the road outside the property.A vehicle had stopped near the gate. Its hazard lights were flashing. Two people were standing beside it.One appeared to be holding someone.I zoomed in.The image wasn't clear enough.I reached for my shirt.Laura opened her eyes.“What happened?”“Nothing.”She pushed herself up.“You said that too quickly.”I looked at her.“There may be an emergency at the gate.”She immediately threw the blanket aside.“What kind?”“I don't know yet.”“I'll come.”“No.”She stopped.“Lucas.”“Stay here.”Her

Victor's POV.I watched the photograph load on my phone. There they were.Lucas, Laura, and Zara. The three perfect duo family, they were all smiling together. The picture had been taken through a long-range camera from across the road.I zoomed in to see Laura's hand rested over her stomach.Lucas stood close enough to touch her. Zara was laughing. They looked comfortable and safe with each other. That was the part I wanted to change.I placed the phone on the table.Vanessa sat opposite me.She had been staring at the picture for nearly a minute.“You shouldn't have done that.”I looked at her.“Done what?”“Taken their picture.”“Why?”“You know why.”I leaned back.“You're worried about Zara.”“She doesn't deserve this.”“Neither does Lucas?”Her eyes narrowed.“Don't twist my words.”“I'm not twisting anything.”I picked up the phone again.“You wanted Lucas to suffer.”“I did.”“You wanted him to understand what it felt like to lose control.”“Yes.”“Then what's the problem?”Sh

Zara's POV.I had changed my clothes four times. The first dress was too tight around my waist. The second made me look like I was going to church. The third was actually nice, but I hated the sleeves, the fourth was still hanging on my body when I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed.“I don't even know why I'm stressing.”I turned sideways. The dress looked fine.Maybe more than fine.I just wasn't used to dressing up for family pictures.Family pictures. The words still felt strange sometimes.I reached for my earrings and put them on.My phone buzzed on the bed.I looked at the screen.**Laura:** Are you ready?I smiled.**Me:** Yes.Three dots appeared.**Laura:** You've said that three times.I laughed.**Me:** I'm actually ready now.**Laura:** Come downstairs before your father starts looking for you.I rolled my eyes. That sounded exactly like something Lucas would do.I slipped my phone into my purse and left the room. The moment I reached the staircase, I heard him.“Z

Laura's POV.I didn't say a word to Lucas. Because if I opened my mouth, I wasn't sure of what would come out of it. If it were truth or lies, or something in between that could ruin everything.I just stood there, holding the file like it was the only thing that could keep me on the right track.L

Lucas's POV.Weeks passed, but that night refused to loosen its grip on me. It refused to stay where it belonged. That night would always stay in the quiet moments that I had to myself. In the spaces between my meetings and in the way my body reacted before my mind could stop it. I had slept with

Laura's POV.For a split second, after my palm connected with Chad's face. People stared at me in awe, like no one trusted what they had just seen. The old Laura would have apologized by now. She would have cried. She would have begged him to understand. She would have folded herself into something

Laura's POV.This day was supposed to be perfect. It was my last day in college, and for once, my chest felt light instead of tight. The kind of light that came with endings that promised new beginnings for me.I stood in front of my mirror, turning slowly, smiling at my reflection like I was meeti
