The whole world faded into background noise, the only sound I could hear that of the blood that rushed through my ears and made a buzzing sound that threatened to deafen me.

I yanked at the collar of my shirt that suddenly felt too tight, feeling the pressure build inside of me so large that it was on the brink of consuming me. The doctor’s lips were moving, but I could barely make out any of the words that were leaving her mouth, and neither could Alina because her eyes were trained on me the whole time.

“He can’t be dead,” I heard myself say, emotions clouding all forms and aspect of logic.

The hall grew silent, three pairs of eyes turning to me.
