Beckett

I crossed the street three different times before I actually made it to Ella’s yard.

The first time, I reached the edge of my driveway and stopped because she had told me she needed space. That should have mattered. It did matter. I had spent too much of my life ignoring what Ella wanted whenever it got in the way of what I wanted, and the last thing I needed to do was prove I still hadn’t learned anything.

So I turned around.

I made it halfway back to my front door before the look on h

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 104

EllaThe room felt impossibly quiet.Beckett sat across from me on the edge of my bed, his elbows resting on his knees, his hands loosely clasped together. The torn note lay on my desk where he’d set it down, but he hadn’t looked at it again. He wasn’t demanding answers anymore. He wasn’t asking who wrote it.He was simply waiting.Somehow, that made this even harder.I stared at the floor between us, tracing invisible lines in the carpet with my eyes. My heart pounded so loudly I wondered if he could hear it.Finally, he spoke.“You don’t have to tell me tonight.”I looked up.His expression was tired. Worried. But there wasn’t an ounce of frustration in it.“I don’t?”He shook his head.“I want you to.”A sad smile tugged at one corner of his mouth.“But I don’t want you talking because you’re afraid I’ll leave if you don’t.”My throat tightened.“I wouldn’t leave over this.”“You don’t know that.”“I do.”“You can’t.”I hugged my knees closer to my chest.“You don’t know what this

BeckettI crossed the street three different times before I actually made it to Ella’s yard. So I turned around.I made it halfway back to my front door before the look on her face in the hallway flashed through my mind again. Not anger. Not disappointment.Fear.I crossed the street a second time. This time, I made it all the way to her sidewalk before I convinced myself showing up would only make things worse. Maybe she needed one night without me hovering. Maybe every relationship had moments where one person pulled away and the other had to respect it. Maybe I was being selfish because I couldn’t handle not knowing where I stood.I turned around again.By the t

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 102

BeckettI watched Ella walk away until she disappeared around the corner. She never looked back. For the first time since we’d gotten together, I had absolutely no idea how to fix what was happening.I stood in front of her locker long after the hallway had emptied, staring at the place where she’d been standing only seconds earlier. My brain replayed every conversation we’d had that day, searching for the moment I’d screwed everything up.Had I forgotten something?Said something wrong?Pushed too hard?Nothing made sense. She kept telling me I hadn’t done anything. But people didn’t pull away from someone they cared about for no reason.Something had happened.I just didn’t know what.“You planning on spending the night out here?”Sean’s voice broke through my thoughts.I blinked. The hallway was almost empty now. Sean stood a few feet away with his backpack slung over one shoulder, watching me with the same expression Coach wore whenever he knew someone was lying.“You look like so

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 101

EllaThere was something dangerous about being happy when you had spent most of your life waiting for happiness to turn around and humiliate you.I knew how ridiculous that sounded. Happy was supposed to be the goal. It was supposed to be the reward at the end of all the terrible days, the proof that things could change if you survived long enough. I should have been enjoying the fact that Beckett Carter walked beside me into school with his fingers threaded through mine, not wondering how long it would take before someone reminded me that girls like me weren’t supposed to have boys like him.But old habits didn’t disappear just because someone kissed you and told you that you mattered.Sometimes they only grew quieter. They waited until you relaxed. Then they whispered.Beckett’s thumb brushed across the back of my hand as we crossed the parking lot, and I glanced at him. He looked completely at ease, like he didn’t notice how many people were staring at us. Or maybe he noticed and s

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 100

BeckettI used to think changing happened all at once.Like flipping a switch. One day you’re one person. The next day you’re someone better.Turns out…that’s complete bullshit.Real change is quieter than that. It’s waking up every morning and choosing not to become the person you were the day before. And some days…that’s harder than I ever imagined.⸻Monday morning started the way most Mondays did.Too early.Too much coffee.Mason was arguing with my mom because she’d informed him dinosaurs had, in fact, gone extinct.“I still think they’re hiding.”“They’re not hiding.”“You don’t know that.”Laura sighed into her coffee.“I have raised a conspiracy theorist.”“I prefer visionary.”I shook my head as I grabbed a piece of toast.“You’ve been watching too many documentaries.”“They’re educational.”“They’re cartoons.”“They educate me.”I laughed despite myself.A year ago, I would’ve been halfway out the door already, barely paying attention to breakfast. Now…I found myself lin

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 99

BeckettIf someone had told me a year ago that I’d be nervous about walking across the street carrying two pizzas, I would’ve laughed in their face.Friday night football? No problem.Fourth-and-goal with the game on the line?Loved it.Meeting college scouts?Easy.Walking next door to have pizza with Ella Monroe and her mom?Apparently that was enough to make my palms sweat.Mason bounced beside me the entire walk across the street, proudly carrying a bag of garlic knots like he had personally prepared the meal.“Hurry up,” he complained. “Pizza gets cold.”“It’s been outside for ten seconds.”“Exactly.”Laura laughed behind us.“He acts like he’s never eaten before.”“I haven’t,” Mason said dramatically. “I’m wasting away.”I shook my head.“You had three snacks before we left.”“Those were appetizers.”The front door opened before we even knocked.Ella stood there wearing a soft blue sweater and jeans, her hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. She smiled the second she saw us, a

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 20

Beckett I should look away. I’ve been telling myself that for the last ten minutes. Look away. Stop staring. Go talk to somebody. Jump back in the pool. Do literally anything else. Instead, my eyes keep finding her. Every single time. Across the backyard, Ella sits at the edge of the pool

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 19

Beckett For a second, I honestly think I’m imagining things. The noise of the party fades into the background. The music, the conversations, the splashing from the pool—everything blurs together until all I can focus on is the girl standing near the patio. Ella. My brain recognizes her immediate

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 7

Ella The second I walk through the front door, I know something is wrong. Not bad wrong. Just… different. The house isn’t quiet. Usually when I get home, the silence hits me first. The TV is off. The kitchen is empty. Mom’s car is nowhere in sight. Today, her purse is sitting on the entry tabl

  • My Bully Next Door   Chapter 6

Ella I should’ve known better. That’s the thought that follows me out of the hallway and down the sidewalk behind the school. I should’ve known better than to expect anything from Beckett Cross. The frustrating part isn’t that he disappointed me. It’s that some small, stupid part of me expected
