For one terrifying moment, the battlefield forgot the war.

Kael dropped to his knees beside Lyra as another wave of pain seized her. Her fingers dug into his arm, and the color drained from her face.

"Our baby..." she whispered through clenched teeth. "It's time."

Around them, the battlefield lay in ruins. The royal castle had become little more than broken stone and burning timber. Smoke drifted through the air while crimson lightning flashed across the darkened sky.
