Clea would've successfully killed it if Tarik had been a second late. He jumped in at the last moment, pushing himself and the wolf away, so Clea's shot went straight out of the roof.
As she staggered to her feet, suspiciously eyeing the seemingly familiar duo that was Tarik and the wolf, Clea could still feel her heart thumping. She directed her gun again to the wolf."You know this thing?" She asked.Tarik nodded in response to her. He was more occupied with calming the beast and getting it to stay away from Clea. "Her name's wolf.""Your..." Clea couldn't believe what she heard. "Your pet?! You have a pet wolf?!" It was starting to make sense that he was an outcast. He didn't respond, but Clea didn't want a response either. "Well, tell your goddamn pet wolf the next time it tries this shit with me, you won't be able to save it from my wrath!"Wolf growled and wrestled against Tarik's hold. Clea took a 'threatening' stance and growled back. The beast had scared her to death and she now despised it.She picked up her box and jacket, carried Jo and quickly exited the sitting room. Her fast walking pace didn't stop till she reached the road path. Then she dropped onto her knees and did nothing but pant for the next five minutes. She couldn't remember the last time she had been as scared as the wolf made her. She couldn't remember ever being that scared. It was one thing that it attacked her, and it was another thing that it had so much hatred in its red eyes. She didn't know animals could get so expressive, but it had been so obvious in its eyes.Wolf hated her.Clea could only bank on the fact that it hated everyone else it came in contact with asides from Tarik. She only wished the asshole had cared to warn her about his mad wolf.* * * * *The innkeeper wouldn't shut up. She started speaking the moment Clea entered, and she hadn't shut up since. Clea wanted to lodge and get to her room as soon as possible. While the woman wanted to keep Clea in the waiting room as long as possible.Clea figured the best she could do was give polite smiles and no replies, but even that was doing nothing in getting her to shut up."Tell me, how long will you be here?" She was smiling and Clea thought it looked creepy."I'm not sure yet—""You should stay here for a long time!! Ohalo is a beautiful, peaceful town and you're always welcome!"Clea forced a smile. The woman's words were ironic. The very first thing she did when Clea arrived was ramble about how she wished she was living in the city, and not a small countryside town like Ohalo."Oh, I am sure you're married!! You're married, right? How many kids do you have? Three? Where are they then? Don't tell me you're one of these mothers who drop their kids behind when they go on vacations. How will they see the world then?"The woman was having a full-on conversation by herself."I'm only twenty-six, so, no, I'm not married."The innkeeper, Inna, dropped the pen she was using to fill the logbook and Clea wished she hadn't answered. "Not married at twenty-six??!!" She cast a condescending look at Clea. "At that age, I had gone into the labour room six times!!"Was that supposed to be a flex?'Yeah, and where are all those babies you spawned.' Clea sighed, keeping her true reply to herself. "I see."Inna smirked. "That's why you're here then? To find a husband?"Clea chuckled. Indeed. "Already found one."Inna was surprised. "Didn't you say you just arrived?""Yeah... last night. Spent the night at a beau's. He lives in the woods. You know him? Name's Tarik."Clea was sure with the angle she just took, she would soon be getting all the tea Tarik refused to spill himself.Inna's smile vanished. "Oh, dear. That is no man to want a husband in." She picked up her pen, her face clouded with worry and fear. "He must've harmed you overnight." The edges of her lips turned down in pity."Harmed me?" Clea laughed. "Do I look harmed?""No, but...""But?" Clea questioned, stepping closer to the counter."You should've avoided him! I don't blame you for not doing so, though. Only we the town people know he's to be avoided.""Why should he be avoided?" Clea stepped even closer, overflowing with curiosity. She knew his history would be spicy but this woman was making her return to her first impression that he was a dangerous man.Inna brought her head closer and opened her mouth, but nothing came out. After a few seconds of dilly-dallying, she shook her head. "It's still early morning. Won't say something like that this early." She handed Clea a room card and keys. "Up the stairs. Last room on your right."* * * * *The first thing Clea did once her phone came on was to call Kali, and sure enough, Kali was worried."Girlll, I left home 4 AM because of you! I was preparing to hold a search once I arrived. I'm so glad I don't have to anymore."Clea chuckled. "I had a little accident so I couldn't get into town yesterday. Jo was injured too. I met this guy who said he could help and we spent the night in his home. He lives on the outskirts and he's... but I'm in town now."Kali released a loud sigh. "Driving past your car as I speak. That front's gonna need a whole reconstruction."Clea rubbed her forehead. "I don't even want to think about it, it'll give me a headache." She dropped onto the bed and released a loud sigh. Not as big or comfy as her home bed but... it was something."The inn's just by the town entrance. When you arrive, don't bother lodging, let's stay here together. It's alright."Kali faked a groan. "You know I can't stand your nightmar—"There was a scream. It was so shrill and loud, and came so sharply after Kali stopped, that for a second, Clea wasn't sure Kali was the one who screamed. She had never heard Kali scream before."Kali!! Kali!!" Clea shouted into the phone. There was no reply and Clea saw the line had been disconnected. She took a second to process what just happened and it dawned on her that Kali was in danger.Clea was out of the room in another second. She didn't even know where she was running to. She rushed out and sprinted down the hallway in such a daze that she didn't see the person in her path. She would've fallen if the person hadn't caught her. She would've continued running if she hadn't glanced at the person to say thank you. Once she saw who it was, Clea became rooted to the spot. Her mind blocked out every thought, even the fact that her friend was in danger. She couldn't move, couldn't take her eyes off the man.He had the same reaction, so they were both staring at each other in shock. In a few seconds, tears were sliding down Clea's cheeks. Her hands went up to hold his face. She wanted to confirm that he was really there like she was seeing. That this wasn't another one of her imaginations. The man was Tyler Forrest. The first and only man Clea had ever loved. They had broken up seven years ago. Clea's heart shattered that day, and it never fully recovered. She thought of him every single day for the past seven years. She believed she had lost him forever, that she was going to grow old with a broken heart.Yet, somehow, that man was standing in front of her.Kali wasn't one to scream. She believed a scream portrayed weakness and Kali didn't like coming off as weak. She screamed because the situation demanded it. She was talking to Clea on the phone when her car's back tyres started rising off the ground. It would've made sense to her if she'd been speeding then suddenly braked, but that wasn't what happened. She was driving, and her Car started turning upside down out of nowhere. She looked back, saw nothing, and went crazy. Her phone fell off her hand and onto the floor as she gripped the steering wheel for dear life. All the while, she was screaming out her lungs. All her life, she had scoffed at the supernatural, and here she was facing something completely unexplainable in logical terms. She was going crazy. She thought of yanking off her seatbelt and jumping out, but except she was flash, there was no way she could pull that off without increasing the possibility of her getting injured. The car tumbled twice and landed on its tyr
A thousand years ago, when Floré, the witch turned demon, screamed out all the fury in her and created a parallel dimension to which she banished all the supernatural beings in Ohalo, she didn't put much thought into the world she created. She didn't design it, not to talk of refining it. She just created a space vacuum and sent them into it. She wasn't bothered about their welfare. She wanted them away from the humans, and she didn't care what the place would spell for the creatures. Well...It spelt doom.It spelt torture. It spelt degradation. For all of them. For a thousand years. Every second they spent in her prison, they suffered. It was a hell, a hell they had long given up trying to escape. A hell they didn't think they could one day escape. The vampires, for lack of human or even animal blood to consume, thinned over the years. It wasn't merely body thinning, their very soul thinned. Their skin was normally pale, but a few centuries in there, it turned ashen. Their skin
Clea kissed Tyler like she missed him. Like she really missed him. When her lips finally found his, they moved like they never wanted to be separated from his. With maddening hunger. And so much passion that, at first, surprised Tyler. It didn't take long for him to return the enthusiasm though. Their hands were fumbling through each other clothes in seconds and Clea was pressed against the window. She ran her hands through his hair, his neck, his chest. She couldn't get enough. Their lips parted and Tyler dropped his head to her chest. Clea looked up at the ceiling, feeling so much relief that she could cry. This was just like the old times. It was like nothing had changed. She and Tyler, skipping classes just to make out. It felt like yesterday. She almost couldn't believe this was happening. Tyler kissed his way up Clea's chest roughly. He pulled aside the tiny tank-top sleeve in an effort to nibble her shoulder. Licked his way to her neck, then face, and crushed his lips with
Clea's worry dissolved once she laid her eyes on the grinning sheriff. She and Kali had been worried, wondering what could've warranted a visit from the town overseer within hours of their arrival. Clea suspected Inna had something to do with this, and that assumption was soon proved right. "To what do I owe the pleasure of these beautiful young ladies visit?" His mouth was stretched wide in an almost-scary grin. At least, it seemed genuine. "We were wondering quite the same thing," Clea said. "To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit? I hope we're not in trouble," she added lightly. The sheriff feigned surprise. "Trouble? Oh No." He held out his hand for a handshake. "Sheriff Sherlock." Clea took it. "Clea McEnery." "Kali Nightingale." Clea raised a brow at Kali. Nightingale...? "Beautiful surname," the sheriff commented. If he noticed the weird look Clea gave Kali, he didn't show it. "Thank you." They were soon seated in the lounge."First of all, let me give you a pro
The walk back to the inn wasn't really a walk. The girls speed-walked, and it had something to do with the wolf story they just heard. The sound of Inna's laughter greeted them as they entered. She was laughing. Incessantly. Hysterically. This wasn't the sour woman they left behind. Did something possess her? They eventually had to stop and inquire."What's so amusing, Inna?" asked Clea.Inna pointed at the entrance, hysterical tears rolling down her cheek. "He fell."Clea and Kali looked at the porch and saw nothing. It was empty when they were coming in, and remained so. Not even the sheriff's jeep was there. "Sherlock fell," she cackled and bent over, holding her stomach."The bastard." She sniffed. "I have been praying for this to happen for years. Every time he walked out with that stupid ego of his dangling on his shoulder, I'd wish for him to fall. And it finally happened today." She laughed. "As you ran out and your friend followed you, he tried to run after you two. He got t
He looked up and Clea turned around, overwhelmed with an urge to adjust her hair. She did that, cleared her throat and turned back to face him. "How?"He stood up. "No, sit," said Clea. When he stood still, she went to him and, softly but steadily, pushed him back onto the bed. "I said sit." Her hands remained on his chest. She liked how warmth radiated off him. Loved the feel of his heartbeat. "Warm," she said. "I snuck in.""I figured out that much." "Your jacket," he said, and put it on the bed. "About this morning...""Oh uh. Uhmm..." Clea scratched her nape. "The sheriff came here and... started going on about how you're a dangerous man—""I'm not.""I know." She stared down into his eyes and repeated, making sure she got the point across. "I know you're not. I wouldn't be here in this room with you if I thought you were dangerous. I wouldn't have... slept on you." His eyebrows drew together. "You think I'm a good person?""I know you are." "Why?"Clea smacked her lips. "
She withdrew her leg and shifted away from Tarik, but knew it was useless as he had seen them already. Tyler's face boiled with something that was definitely anger. He wouldn't, would he? Would he do what Clea was thinking he would? Her suspicion was soon confirmed. Tyler matched over and began raining blows on Tarik. This happened for ten seconds before Clea snapped out of her shock. Tyler shouted profane obscenities at Tarik, dedicated to destroying his face. He braced another punch which never landed. He pulled, but his hand remained in the air. He looked to see Clea holding his elbow."Stop!" she yelled. He pushed his hand backwards, intending to push her away. He was shocked when Clea swerved out of the way. She gathered momentum and pushed him, sending him tumbling down to the ground from the bed. She came down and stood in front of him. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?! And you!" she directed her glare at Tarik. "Why are you lying there just taking it?!" In the m
It wasn't until nighttime that Kali returned to the inn. Meaning Clea remained asleep, undisturbed till nighttime. "What took you so long?" Clea said groggily as Kali made her way inside carrying shopping bags. "I told you it was gonna take a while, didn't I?""A while, not hours." She laid back on the bed and covered herself with the sheet. It was cold. She was missing Tarik. "Yeah, well, who could've guessed this town would be so fun to tour." She dropped the begs by the dressing table before giving Clea her full attention. "You slept? Great!""Yeah," She slept soundly too, which was surprising considering the situation that led to her getting on the bed. "Something—""This town is huge! Not huge as in large, but huge as in a-lot! It's small even for a town but fun. They have this large mall... I wasn't expecting that. Do you know Christianity isn't the major religion here? I've forgotten what it's called but they have a Shaman, like head priestess sort of thing, and her church
