Chapter 1

Author: Hundred Years
Onyx was sleeping soundly beside me, his tail wrapped tightly around my waist, when I woke him up far less gently than he would have liked.

"Wake up already. Do you know what day it is?"

Onyx opened his eyes and shook his head, still groggy from sleep. He blinked up at me, looking completely lost.

The sight was so adorable that I froze for a moment. Then I remembered the important business I had to take care of. I pried his tail off me and nudged him toward the edge of the bed.

"Come on. No more sleeping. We have something important to do today."

Onyx seemed disappointed when I pushed his tail away so firmly. He lowered his eyes and said nothing. Although he had no idea what this important business was, he obediently climbed out of bed and followed me around while I hurried through my preparations.

I had to admit that the fortune I spent on Onyx at the exotic pet market years ago had been money well spent. He was gentle, intelligent, and surprisingly perceptive. Over the years, he had learned not only how to do housework but also how to cook.

He was practically a live-in housekeeper disguised as a pet and took care of me in every possible way. I could only credit myself for that. When he was little, I fed him by hand, bathed him myself, and rocked him to sleep every night, treating him like royalty.

I scooped up the entire dragon and carried him into the bathroom.

"Take a bath first," I told him. "You need to be nice and clean before we go out."

After shutting the door behind him, I waited.

Several minutes passed.

Not a single sound came from inside.

Curious, I opened the door and found the dragon curled up exactly where I had left him. He had not moved at all. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up, and he immediately slithered over, trying to wrap himself around me again.

I sidestepped the tail reaching for me and frowned.

"Didn't I already show you how to use the showerhead last time? How do you still not get it?

"You learn every little chore so quickly. Why can't you ever figure out how to take a bath by yourself?"

I grumbled the entire time while giving in and bathing him myself.

Onyx looked deeply aggrieved by the scolding. He kept rubbing against me and nuzzling my shoulder, acting sweet and affectionate as though he were apologizing and asking me not to be angry.

With a sigh, I adjusted the water temperature for him anyway.

That was the one flaw Onyx had.

He was incredibly picky about bathwater. If it was slightly too hot, he hated it. If it was slightly too cold, he hated it just as much. On top of that, he always liked pressing against me and making soft, whining sounds whenever he was in the bath.

I could only conclude that I had somehow raised a very strange pet.

Most of the time, he was not nearly this delicate. He was simply a little too clingy. Yet whenever bath time came around, he insisted on the full treatment, acting as though he were the most precious creature in the world.

Just as I finished bathing Onyx, my phone rang.

I dried my hands and answered. An impatient voice immediately came through the speaker.

"We've been waiting forever. Why aren't you here yet?"

"Almost there, almost there," I said quickly. "Something came up."

After ending the call, I had Onyx wrap himself around me and headed out.

In all the years since I brought him home, Onyx had gone out only a handful of times. He was clearly excited by the outing, constantly looking around as we traveled. The excitement vanished the moment we reached our destination.

He froze.

A man with a giant golden python coiled around his body opened the door. His face lit up the moment he saw me.

"You're Kenzie Rowe, right? Come in, come in."

His gaze shifted to Onyx wrapped around me, and he clicked his tongue in admiration.

"It really is a rare top-tier breed. Look at those markings. Look at those scales. Look at those horns."

Uncomfortable under the scrutiny, Onyx buried his head deeper into the crook of my neck.

"What did you expect?" I said proudly. "I paid a fortune for him."

A moment later, I rubbed my hands together and gave the man a slightly embarrassed smile.

"About the price..."

The man laughed.

"Didn't we already settle that online? I'm not charging you anything. We'll split the eggs fifty-fifty after they're laid."

Only then did I finally relax.

"Great," I said. "It's a deal."

I grabbed the throw pillow next to me and threw it at him."Get out! Get out right now! Tomorrow I'm having Sprout sleep with me, so you can go sleep in the living room!"Apparently, that struck a nerve, because he stormed out in a fury. The next morning, I woke up feeling well rested. When I walked into the living room, though, Sprout was nowhere to be seen.I found Onyx in the kitchen, busy making breakfast."Where's Sprout?" I asked.Onyx still seemed to be in the same good mood as the day before, but his words told a completely different story."I threw it out," he said calmly. My eyes widened."Threw it out where?" I asked at once. "Do you have any idea how much I paid for it?"Onyx glanced up from what he was doing."You care about it that much?"I was momentarily speechless at his possessiveness."I paid a fortune for it," I said. "Besides, I've had it for quite a while now."Suddenly, Onyx rinsed his hands and set one damp hand beside my ear, his lips catching my

He paused, and his eyes lit up, but the moment he heard what I said next, the light in them dimmed."You'll have to change back into your original form, though."He frowned again."Why? The two forms make no difference to me at all."I did not understand what he meant by that, but I chose not to ask. I had a feeling that if I asked even one more question, I would lose my nerve. He continued."Then which form should I take to mate with you? Or rather, which version of me do you like more?"Once again, I was left speechless. Why on earth was this dragon obsessed with that topic? I had no intention of answering, and I certainly did not want to encourage him. Before long, Onyx tossed Sprout out of the bedroom, claiming he did not like having other species in there. Heaven knew I felt exactly the same way.I remembered agreeing with him that we would sleep in separate rooms. Somehow, though, he seemed to forget that arrangement every single day and ended up crawling under my covers

With that, he found a chair, sat down, and looked at me."Why are you still here? Planning to stick around and take care of me in my old age?"I looked at him, wanting to ask how he had found Onyx in the first place. Yet when I turned around again, the old man had vanished without a trace. The sheer strangeness of it made me jump.Onyx explained it to me."He's the spirit of the mountain behind us. Years ago, he saw how bored I was on my own, so he tricked me into leaving and sold me to you."I stared at him in shock."A mountain spirit? A shameless old crook? A guy who tricks kids? Those are all the same person?"Onyx's lips suddenly curved into a smile at my reaction."I spent years carefully choosing you. It wasn't really a trick. If anything, I should thank him."I was speechless. For the first time, I genuinely felt as though I was living in a fantasy world. The revelation was so absurd that I did not spend much time thinking about anything else he had said.Under the ch

After we got away from the crowd, I led Sprout and Onyx toward the woods nearby. All the trimmed branches in the park had already been cleared away, so the woods were the only place left to find whole ones. The woods were not very deep, but I had heard they connected to a stretch of remote mountains on the other side. No one ever ventured into those mountains. That reminded me of something, and I glanced at Onyx."Is your home around here?"Onyx did not understand why I was asking, so I explained."After all, dragons live either in the water or up in the mountains."Onyx answered firmly."I might have been born here, but my home isn't here."I grew curious. "Then where's your home?"He suddenly raised a hand and pointed at me."Wherever you are, that's my home."I froze. I knew all too well that Onyx was a dragon who never lied, and for some reason, I felt a little warmth spread through my chest.I did not ask any more questions after that. As we reached the edge of the woo

I spent quite a while trying to figure out why the little green snake had rammed itself into the cage earlier. In truth, my thoughts kept drifting back to what had happened before, and I could not understand why Onyx's personality had changed so drastically all of a sudden.Did dragons go through some kind of complete personality shift once they reached adulthood? At that moment, I genuinely wanted to demand answers from the heavens and ask for my sweet, adorable Onyx back. Lost in thought, I crouched in front of the sealed cage for so long that I must have looked completely helpless. Then Onyx's voice came from behind me. For some reason, his silky voice seemed to carry a clingy, honeyed note."This kind of snake can't be kept in a sealed box this small. You need a larger enclosure with branches for it to coil around."Only after hearing that did I remember reading about the care requirements for this type of snake.Onyx stood behind me, eyeing Sprout as he spoke irritably."It

I had to admit, Onyx in human form was far too striking. How many people in this world could see such good looks and stay unmoved? I certainly could not. Yet what he said was so blatant that it was hard to ignore.I tried to push Onyx away, but he would not budge. In the end, I could only let out a sigh."Onyx, turning into a human doesn't make you human. You're still a dragon, and I'm still a human. We're completely different.""Besides, it took you a thousand years just to reach adulthood, while my entire life will only last a few decades. We're not right for each other."Even after I explained it, Onyx acted as though he had not heard a word. He continued holding on and refused to let go."It's time for you to give me my bath."I was furious when I realized this dragon had not been listening to a single word I said. After all that talking, none of it had gotten through to him. I squirmed in his arms, trying to break free, but he was far too strong. No matter how hard I struggl
