After dinner, the family of eight sat in front of the fireplace, watching TV. December was filled with cold air and Ella was huddled in Daniel’s arms, as she asked her kids about their experience in the army, and Carl’s life abroad.

She looked at her daughter who had become beautiful, and then at her two sons who had become manly, that they could make a girl’s heart race and her gaze became emotional.

“Was life too hard in the army?”

Clare, Caleb, and Carl looked at their mother before they shared a glance.

Clare cleared her throat and stated, “I won’t lie to you. It was tough and very exhausting at first. I even thought of coming back but I did not want to embarrass you and Dad, so I just had to grit my teeth and bear through it.”

Caleb picked up from where Clare left and he continued to narrate, “We were placed in different training camps and we rarely saw each other. But when we did, Clare and I were still undergoing our training while Carl had already become a hi
