Valentina’s POV

“Hello, granddaughter.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Helena stood at the end of the corridor as if she had been waiting for us.

Alive.

Calm.

Almost amused.

My eyes moved from her to Isabella.

My little girl was pressed against the woman holding the gun.

“Mommy,” Isabella whispered.

My heart broke.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

I forced my voice to stay steady.

“Mommy is here.”

Helena smiled.

“She always was.”

I stared at her.

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“No.”

Her answer was cal

Dante’s POVThe explosion threw everyone to the floor.Dust filled the room.I heard Valentina scream my name, then the sharp sound of something crashing against the wall.“Valentina!”“I’m here!”I pushed myself up.My ears were ringing.Smoke hung in the air, making it hard to see.“Isabella!”“I have her!”Valentina’s voice came from somewhere to my left.I moved toward her.She was crouched behind an overturned table, holding Lucia against her chest.Isabella was on the floor beside her, crying. The nurse was gone.So was Helena.“Are you hurt?”Valentina shook her head.“No.”I grabbed Isabella and pulled her into my arms. She buried her face against my chest.“Daddy.”“I’ve got you.”I looked around. The wall behind us was gone.A hole had opened into another room. And someone was standing inside it.A man.Older.Blood covered one side of his face. But I knew him.My breath caught.“Anthony Ricci.”Valentina looked up.“Dad?”The man stared at her.For a second, he couldn’t spe

Dante’s POVThe second cry came again.Louder this time.Closer.Valentina stood beside me, completely frozen.“There’s someone under us,” she whispered.I looked down at the floor. It was solid concrete. No door.No stairs.Nothing.Yet the crying was unmistakable.A baby. And somewhere beneath our feet, Valentina’s mother was claiming she was alive.I turned toward Adrian.“You said there was no room underneath this one.”Adrian didn’t answer.“Where is the entrance?”Still nothing.I grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall.“Where?”His head struck the stone.“Dante!”Valentina caught my arm.“Don’t.”I released him, but only because I needed answers more than I needed to hurt him.Adrian straightened his jacket.“You’re wasting time.”“Then stop wasting mine.”His eyes moved toward the ceiling.“She shouldn’t have called you.”“Who?”“Your mother.”Valentina stepped forward.“You knew she was alive?”Adrian looked at her.“Yes.”Her face crumpled.“You knew?”“Y

Valentina’s POV“Serena.”Her name barely left my mouth. She stood at the top of the stairs, one hand gripping the railing, her breathing uneven. She looked different from the last time I had seen her.Older somehow. Not in years. In everything else. Her hair was pulled back, her face pale, and there was a cut across her cheek. Her eyes moved past me and landed on the baby in my arms.Lucia.The moment Serena saw her, something broke across her face.Relief.Fear.Grief.I couldn’t tell which one. Then she whispered,“My baby.”The room seemed to tilt.“No.”Serena took one step down.“Valentina, please.”“No.”I backed away.“You don’t get to call her that.”Her eyes filled with tears.“I know what you’re thinking.”“You’re saying she’s yours.”“She is.”My fingers tightened around the blanket.“She is not yours.”Serena looked at me.“She was taken from me.”I laughed once, but there was nothing funny about it.“Taken from you?”“Yes.”“You expect me to believe that after everything

Dante’s POVThe cry came again.A baby.Somewhere beneath us.Valentina grabbed my arm.“Dante…”“I heard it.”Nobody moved.Even Adrian had gone quiet.I looked at him.“You said the baby was dead.”He didn’t answer.“Answer me.”His face had changed. For the first time since I had seen him, he looked uncertain. That was enough.I turned toward the floor.“Where?”Mia pointed down the hallway.“There.”Carlo was already moving. He kicked aside an old cabinet, revealing a narrow wooden door beneath it.“There’s a staircase.”I pulled it open.Cold air came up from below. The crying became louder.Valentina stepped beside me.“We’re going down.”I nodded.Carlo raised his gun.“I’ll go first.”We descended. The stairs were old and narrow. The deeper we went, the colder it became.Valentina stayed close behind me.Nobody spoke. Then we reached the bottom. There was a single door. The crying came from behind it.I reached for the handle.Locked.Carlo stepped forward.“Move.”He forced t

Valentina’s POVI couldn’t move. The woman standing in the doorway looked like Emilia. Not similar. Not close.Exactly like her.Same dark hair.Same eyes.Same small line beside her mouth.Even the way she stood with one hand resting against the doorframe reminded me of Emilia.Dante stared at her.His face had gone completely blank. The woman smiled.“You remember me.”Dante’s voice was barely audible.“Who are you?”She looked at him for several seconds. Then she said,“Your mother.”Emilia made a broken sound behind us.“No.”The woman turned toward her.“Still pretending?”Emilia shook her head.“You died.”The woman smiled.“That’s what you told him.”Dante looked between them.“Mom?”Emilia couldn’t answer. The woman stepped into the room.“My name is Elena.”Dante stared at her.“Elena.”She nodded.“You were three years old when you stopped calling me that.”My skin prickled.Dante took a step backward.“I don’t remember you.”“I know.”“Why?”“Because they made sure you woul
