Saying Mommy is very, very bad.
That woman said I shouldn't say it. She said she didn't want to be my mommy.
When Auntie Elena said it today, my tummy hurt. My chest hurts real bad. I wanted my Daddy.
Daddy always makes it better.
She didn't like it when I talked. She didn't like looking at me, then she would shout. 'Be quiet!'. I didn't like when she shouted. Sometimes I cried after, and she hated that too. 'Stop crying!' she'd say. I wanted her to be happy, so I stayed quiet like she wanted. I got very good at being quiet.
Daddy says I used to talk all the time. Maybe that's why things got bad.
Now people ask me things and I don't answer. 'What do you want? Are you hungry? Why won't you talk?' I don't know how to explain it. The words just don't come out anymore, so I stopped trying to make them.
Daddy still asks sometimes. He sits next to me and waits. I look at him. He looks back. Then he smiles, and I like when my daddy smiles, it makes me very happy. She didn't like when I smile.
I wish I could talk to my Daddy, Uncle Edward, Granny and Grandpops, Grandma Carter and Auntie Elena too but I do not know how to because talking is very bad.
I like Auntie Elena.
She's nice. She gives me food without forcing me. She lets me sit close. She never tells me I have to talk... she just talks enough for both of us, I like that, because then I don't have to think of anything to say.
Sometimes she gets mad at her books. I don't understand that. Books can't hear her. Sometimes she says something funny and I want to laugh. I like sitting next to her while she studies. She has so many books, and she says she wants to be a doctor one day like Doc- McStuffins. Doctors are scary, they give you boo-boos. But I don't mind auntie Elena being a doctor, she won't make my boo-boo hurt.
I like Auntie Elena's face, she's so pretty. Like Princess Peach.
I didn't mean to scare her today. I wanted to say sorry. I wanted the words to come, just this once, just for her. They didn't. They got stuck, the way they always do.
Mommy.
I hate that word. It's a bad word.
Sometimes I remember her voice. Sometimes I remember her hands. Sometimes there's a door in my head, and I'm scared on the other side of it, and I don't remember what happened next. My head hurts if I try to remember on my own, so I don't try anymore.
I think about Auntie Elena instead. That's easier.
Auntie Elena smells nice. She smiles at me a lot. Her hands are warm when she holds mine. She reads to me sometimes, and tells me I'm a good boy.
I want to be a good boy.
Maybe if I'm good enough, Auntie Elena won't leave like she left. I don't want that. I don't want Daddy sad again either. And I really don't want that woman to come back.
She scares me.
I really want to be a good boy. I want to eat. I want to play. I like sitting next to Auntie Elena while she looks at big books and pretend I understand her big books. I can fall asleep without my chest feeling tight.
But then that word comes back.....Mommy.... and everything feels scary all over again, like the monster is coming for me.
So I won't say it. Not ever.
I'll just stay quiet, the way she always wanted.
Maybe if I'm quiet enough, nothing bad happens this time.
ADRIAN"You're whipped, dude."I stared at Edward. He stared back with a stupid grin plastered on his face. I'd barely hung up with Elena, and somehow this idiot had already found a way to make the next ten minutes of my life miserable."I don't know what you're talking about.""Oh, you know.""I absolutely do not."He leaned back in his chair with the particular grin he reserved for moments he considered himself hilarious. Then he cleared his throat, straightened his posture, and delivered the worst impression of my own voice I'd ever had the misfortune of hearing."'You're my wife, Elena. You deserve everything I have to offer.'" He puckered his lips at the air. "Mwah, mwah. Anything for you, my darling....""Shut up."That earned a full laugh, head tipped back and everything. "Why?""Because you're insufferable.""I have free will.""Unfortunately.""I have every right to speak my mind whenever the mood strikes." He pointed at me. "The mood is currently striking.""Save it." I reac
ELENAFor a few seconds, neither of us moved. Then reality did the thing it always does.... showed up uninvited and ruined a perfectly good moment. I stepped back first. He matched it a half-second later, both of us landing on almost exactly the same amount of distance, like we'd rehearsed it.I cleared my throat. He cleared his. I found something urgent to do with the back of my neck. He found something urgent to do with his hair.Painfully, spectacularly awkward.I risked a glance at him and nearly did a double take. Was he.... no. Absolutely not. This was Adrian Blackwood. Men blushed because of him, not the other way around. He was the reason for most guys gay awakening. There was no universe where I'd just watched color rise in his face because I'd hugged him a beat too long.I looked away and decided I was imagining things."We need to prepare," he said."For what?""Residency."Right. Residency. I was actually, genuinely starting my residency, and the smile that came with remem
ELENAHis hand was on my face.I stared at him. He stared back. Neither of us moved. His thumb rested just beneath my eye, right where he'd wiped away that last tear, and my heart was going way too fast for how still everything else felt."Adrian…"His eyes flickered. For a second neither of us seemed to know what came next. Then he glanced down at his own hand, like he'd only just clocked where it was."I...."He didn't get to finish. Something shifted beside me, and I turned to find Elias awake, watching us both."Oh." I turned my attention to him fast, grateful for the excuse. Adrian cleared his throat, standing up almost too quickly.I looked at Elias properly. His hair was a mess from sleep. "You slept in my room?"A nod.I smiled. "Did you sleep well?"Another nod, then....a smile this time. My chest went soft at the sight of it."I'm glad."He crawled closer without warning and climbed straight into my lap. I wrapped my arms around him on instinct, and then his small hand reach
ADRIANI froze the second she moved. One moment Elena stood in front of me, the next she'd closed the distance and buried her face against my chest, sobs tearing through her like she had been holding it in for a very long time.I hadn't seen it coming, not even close.I'd handled hostile boardrooms. Threats. Blackmail. Grown men rattled enough to sweat through their shirts across a negotiating table. None of that had prepared me for a crying woman wrapped around my waist....a woman who wasn't even supposed to be real to me in any way that mattered. So I did the only thing that felt right. I held her."It's okay," I said, though the words felt useless the second they left me. I didn't know if it was okay. I didn't even know what had happened. But she needed to hear something, so I kept saying it, patting her back slowly while she shook against me."I've got you."She cried harder. I tightened my arms instead of loosening them. Whatever she'd seen out there had cracked something open in
ELENASophia. The name kept looping through my head, over and over, until I couldn't hear anything else. I couldn't move. I just stood there, staring at the woman walking away from me....her face, her hair, the particular way she carried herself. There was no mistaking it. My former best friend, the woman who'd smiled at me for years while quietly helping tear my life apart behind my back. She hadn't recognized me. It took a second before I understood why... the ridiculous face paint Elias had insisted on earlier, some swirling design covering my entire face. Thank God for that, at least. But something else had already pulled my attention past the relief.Sophia stopped a few feet from a man standing near one of the food stalls, and my heart seized before I'd even properly registered why. From that distance I couldn't see his face clearly, but the build, the dark hair, the way he stood.... it was enough to twist my stomach into a knot.It was Daniel.I watched her close the distance t
ADRIANI couldn't stop looking at her.Elena stood there with tears sliding down her face, staring at the ice cream in my hand like it might disappear if she blinked. For a second I actually second-guessed myself. All I'd wanted was to give her something small....something that might make today hurt a little less than it clearly had the potential to.But the way she looked at us tightened something in my chest I hadn't asked for.She wiped her cheeks fast, embarrassed at being caught crying. "Thank you.""You don't have to thank me.""I do."Her fingers brushed the teddy bear before Elias thrust it into her arms without waiting to be asked. She smiled through the tears and took it. "Thank you, sweetheart."He didn't say anything back. He just reached for her hand instead, and she took that too.Something about it caught me off guard every single time I saw it. My son had spent years keeping people at arm's length, and here he was holding her hand like it was nothing at all, like it ha
