Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Warble Pop
My parents' demands grew harsher with every passing day. If I didn't get a perfect score, I was beaten or berated.

I used to think they were just pushing me to succeed. Looking back, I realized that wasn't it. They didn't want me to succeed for my sake.

Instead, they needed me to get a score high enough for what they wanted. Because that score was never really mine.

I thought back to third grade, when my parents had come home from the city to visit Grandma. I'd gotten perfect scores on my tests, and I couldn't wait to show them.

At the time, Mom was brushing Olivia's hair. Without even looking at me, she said, "Leave it on the table."

Later, one of the tests went missing. I spent hours looking for it, but never found it.

Months later, while we were doing a deep clean of the house, I found it in a drawer in Olivia's room. The paper was badly crumpled and covered in scribbles, with Olivia's name scrawled across it in messy handwriting.

I'd asked her why she'd taken my test, but she just laughed. "I thought it'd be fun. Besides, nobody cares what you scored anyway."

I hadn't thought much of it back then. Looking back, I wondered if that had been when my parents started laying out their plans.

They had been testing how easily people could tell Olivia and me apart, gauging just how much we could pass for each other. And the answer was obvious. Most people couldn't tell the difference.

If Mom and Dad switched our scores, put Olivia's photo on my registration and mine on hers, who would ever know? Who would ever suspect a thing?

After all, we were twins.

I didn't dare take the thought any further. If this had all been a scheme from the beginning, just how twisted was that?

I rolled over and buried my face in my pillow. Tears ran down my cheeks, soaking into the fabric.

The next morning, I was up before dawn.

When I came out of my room, my parents were already in the living room.

Mom saw me and smiled. But there was something so unfamiliar about that smile that it sent a chill down my spine.

"Olivia, you're up. Come have breakfast. I made your favorite sandwiches," she said.

Olivia was my sister's name. Mine was Victoria.

At that, I froze for a beat.

Mom, too, realized her mistake. But all she did was smile. She made no attempt to correct herself.

Without a word, I walked over and sat down at the table. A lavish breakfast had been laid out in front of me, with sandwiches, milk, fruit salad, and even a yogurt bowl.

None of this had ever been part of my breakfast before.

What did I normally have?

Sometimes, it was a bowl of plain oatmeal. Other times, it was whatever was left from dinner the night before. If I slept in, I didn't even get that.

Just then, Olivia came out of her room wearing a brand-new dress, her hair styled neatly.

She glanced at the breakfast spread and pursed her lips. "Mom, why are you being so nice to her?"

Mom glared at her. "What are you talking about? Your sister's repeating senior year. She needs to eat well."

The words "repeating senior year" made my hand stop, the sandwich halfway to my mouth.

"I've found the best prep school for you," Dad said. "It costs 20 thousand dollars a year, but your mother and I will find a way to pay for it."

He set down his newspaper and looked at me. His voice was gentler than usual as he went on, "Victoria, you didn't do well on the SAT this time, but we're not blaming you. We'll give it another shot next time."

But was it really me who hadn't done well?

Even then, I kept my head down and said nothing.

Across from me, Olivia popped a piece of fruit into her mouth and giggled as she chewed. "Victoria, aren't you always working so hard? How did you end up with such a low score? Maybe all that studying was just for show."

Her voice was sweet, but every word carried a sting.

"Olivia," Mom snapped.

But there was no real anger in her voice. If anything, she sounded amused, as though she were only scolding Olivia for show.

Olivia stuck out her tongue and continued eating.

At that moment, Dad picked up his coffee and asked in a seemingly casual tone, "Oh, right. Victoria, you said you got up for some water last night because you were thirsty?"

There it was. My chest tightened, but my face gave nothing away.

"Yes. I woke up thirsty."

I looked up at Dad and met his gaze calmly. "Why?"

Dad and Mom exchanged a glance. Then, she jumped in. "Nothing. You've just seemed really stressed lately, and we were worried you weren't sleeping well. By the way, did you hear anything last night?"

  • My Family Celebrates When I Flunk the Exams   Chapter 14

During my sophomore year of college, I heard what had become of Olivia. Emma, a distant cousin from back home, was the one who told me. She said Olivia had gone south and found a job at an electronics factory, working on an assembly line. She'd found a boyfriend there, a man from out of town whose family was struggling financially. She worked at the factory for more than six months before getting pregnant. Then, she quit her job, followed the man back to his hometown, and married him there.Emma sent me a few pictures. Olivia had gained a lot of weight. She wore a flower-print coat, and her hair was loosely tied back, her face blank. She held a baby whose face was streaked with snot, the child bawling in her arms. Behind them was a rundown house with crumbling walls. Much of the plaster had fallen away, and plastic sheeting covered the windows. I zoomed in on the pictures and stared at them for a long time. That face, identical to mine, looked exhausted and numb. Then, I d

By the end of September, the weather had begun to cool. The leaves on the campus trees had begun to turn yellow. Whenever the wind picked up, they came fluttering down, carpeting the ground. Gradually, I settled into college life. I got used to the food in the dining hall, my roommates' antics, the professors' accents in class, and even the sound of pages turning in the library.Every now and then, I found myself thinking about the past. But those memories had faded like old photographs, growing blurrier with each passing day. …In the middle of October, Ms. Ross called me. "Victoria, how have you been?"Her voice was as gentle as ever, with a slight rasp to it."I'm doing well, Ms. Ross. My classes aren't too demanding, and I've been eating well. I've even put on a few pounds."I heard her laugh on the other end. "That's good to hear. You were always so skinny. A few extra pounds will do you good. Oh, I wanted to tell you that the verdict in your case is in."I tightened m

Autumn arrived, and a new academic year began. I stood at the college gates with my suitcase in hand, looking up at its name gleaming in gold above me. This was my college. I had earned my place here with a score of 1470. After everything I had been through, it was finally mine. I took a deep breath, then walked through the gates. Sunlight bathed the campus, reaching every corner. The sycamore leaves were beginning to turn yellow, and they rustled whenever the wind stirred them.I walked along the tree-lined path, surrounded by new students whose faces glowed with excitement and anticipation. I was one of them now. I was no longer the girl who hid in a corner and ate cold leftovers, the girl her parents had used as a tool, or the girl who had spent her whole life feeling unloved.I was someone new now. …When I checked in, the academic advisor looked over my file and smiled. "Victoria Clark, 1470. You have the highest score in the department this year."I smiled and said

It didn't take long for the results of the investigation to come out. The state Department of Education issued an official statement. It read, "The investigation determined that Olivia Clark had fraudulently used her twin sister Victoria Clark's SAT score as her own. The employees involved have been placed under investigation. Olivia Clark's admission has been revoked, and her SAT score has been invalidated."Mr. Vance was fired from his position at the school, while officials in the district admissions office were also investigated and held accountable. My parents were also placed under investigation for allegedly paying bribes. Once the story hit the news, it sparked a huge public backlash. The story of twin sisters whose parents had switched their SAT scores quickly went viral, drawing a flood of angry comments online. One comment read, "What kind of parents would do that to their own kid?""The younger sister had to know about it too, right? What kind of people are they?"

Everyone turned to look at the people who had just walked in, wondering what was going on. Mom's face went pale, while Dad opened his mouth as if to speak. But in the end, no words came out. Olivia stood in front of the main table, and her smile faltered."Which one of you is Victoria Clark, and which is Olivia Clark?" one of the investigators asked. I rose and said, "I'm Victoria Clark."Olivia stood rooted to the spot, her lips trembling. Then, one of the women from the investigation team walked up to her. "Are you Olivia Clark?"Olivia didn't answer. She turned toward our parents, panic flashing across her face. Mom rushed forward and planted herself between Olivia and the investigators. "There must be some mistake! My daughter's score is legitimate! You can't do this!"Dad came over too, trying to stop the investigators. "Please, today is supposed to be a happy occasion. Whatever this is about, can't we talk about it another day?""Mr. Clark, we have enough evidence. W

Waiting was the hardest part. Every day, I went to class at my prep school, came home for dinner, and put up with my parents' forced concern and Olivia's constant digs. Before long, Olivia's college acceptance letter arrived. She'd been accepted to one of the top ten universities in the country to study finance.Mom clutched the letter and burst into tears. Dad, too, was visibly moved as he slipped an arm around Olivia's shoulders. "I knew it. I always knew you'd make us proud," he said. They decided to throw a huge celebration on August 16, spare no expense, and invite every relative and friend. Olivia picked out a red dress to wear to the celebration. Then, Mom took her to get her hair done and treated her to a full day of beauty treatments, spending a small fortune on her.I stood in the corner and watched it all unfold. Somehow, I felt calm. Soon, this would all be over.…On August 16, the celebration was held at the best hotel in town. Mom wore a striking red dress,
