LOGIN“Ruin?”Eveline dug into her nail bed, forcing her voice to remain neutral. She didn’t want Lily asking questions later, but she wasn’t going to sit here and let Gerald downplay what happened. Like it was a disagreement over breakfast options. “He cheated on me,” she said tightly, unable to keep the hurt and the sting of the betrayal from her tone. “And you’re saying it’s a one-time mistake?”Gerald's shoulders lifted in an imperceptible shrug. “He said it was just that one time. She came on to him because she was jealous of your relationship. You see—” he tried to touch her shoulder, but she flinched away. An angry look flashed across his face, his mouth flattening into a scowl. But Gerald smoothed it out quickly, slipping on a polite, fatherly smile. The kind that told her he was doing her a favor by explaining. Not that he was obligated to. “You and Shane make a power couple. He’s the son of a well-known surgeon, with a mother who works in local politics. He’s an attorney, too
“You look like you walked through a hurricane to get here,” Lily said as she met Eveline at the nurse’s station, the words leaving her lips as she took a good look at her, then a second double-take. Her brows furrowed as she dropped her file on a desk with a smack, grabbing Eveline’s face in both hands. She turned it one way, then the other. “Huh…” she tucked her tongue in her cheek, inspecting with all seriousness. “You don’t look like you were crying, so it’s safe to say Shane didn’t do anything wrong.”“But,” she stuck her tongue out. “Something is going on. I can tell.”Eveline gently pulled her hands off. “There’s nothing going on.”Lily shook her head and wagged her finger. “Nope. I’ve been your best friend for years now, Eveline. I know when you’re lying. I also know that I texted you five times, but you didn’t respond—which is unlike you. So—” she folded her arms, “—are you going to tell me or should I have to pry it from your mind?”“Seriously,” Eveline mumbled. “I’m okay.”
Lucien’s grip fell off her wrist, sliding around her waist instead. His fingers grazed her skin, the point where her blouse had somehow ridden up, lingering without an apology. “Go,” he murmured, with a lazy nod. He sounded almost…entertained. Amused, even. “Go ahead. Try. Tell my brother how I kissed you, against the wall of the penthouse he tried to steal from me.” His grip tightened, digging into the sensitive spot on her hip. Her lips parted as his thumb swept lower, her mouth dry and parched. She hated it—God, she hated him. But her body was screaming for him to touch her properly. She wasn’t sure how much she could withstand before he would see right through her, to the pool of molten lust pressing into her core, making her clench softly. It was embarrassing how badly she wanted him to touch her. “My brother is a sucker for details, you know.” He smiled. “He likes it when you don’t leave anything out, so he can twist the story to suit his narrative when he wants to
Did she have the right address? Eveline’s hand fell to her side as her jaw hung slack, the scrunchie she’d been struggling to tie her hair with, dangling from an unintentional messy bun. She was standing at the end of a cobblestone-style driveway, staring at the house at the other end. She took a look at her phone, at the address she’d typed into her note app before leaving Green Hill an hour ago, after she found out Lucien had left for the day, promising her dad she’d be back the next day. Right on time to help him move out of the hospital. Eveline had no intention of letting that happen, though. That’s why she was here, standing in front of the most gorgeous house she’d ever seen. Lush green lawn flanked both sides of the driveway, leading up to a two-story building with stone walls and warm wood accents, and large dark-framed windows with drapes drawn across them. Behind the house were trees, taller than the brown roof, making it look like a dream resort tucked into the
Eveline stormed into her father’s hospital room, the document that Lucien handed her dangling from her fingertips. A nurse was there, attending to the IV line, slowly feeding a transparent liquid into his body. He was awake. Awake. A relieved gasp pulled from her lips as she rushed over to his bedside. “Hey, pumpkin,” he croaked weakly, a tender smile lighting up his face. He looked frail, his cheekbones long gone and his eyelids hanging heavy, but he was still the loving, jovial teddy bear she knew. “I told you I’m not dying any time soon.”She took his hand as tears choked her throat, not registering the document as it fell, hitting the floor with a flat flapping sound. “Dad…”He squeezed her hand as best as he could. The nurse cleared her throat. “I’ll give you some space. I’ll be back in an hour to check on you, Mr. Storm.”Eveline let a tear run free down her cheek as the door closed softly. She brought their joined hands to her lips, kissing his knuckles. Her father gently
Snot ran down Shane’s nose. “Eveline. I’m sorry…I didn’t mean it, I swear. It was just a one thing thing, and she was the one who came on to me!”“Look—” he held up his phone, the screen bright against her face. “I broke it off.”She could see the messages, the words spelled wrongly. “Its ova btwn us. Don’t call me agin.”“But you said you were going to leave her.”“I love Evie. Not you. You forced me to cheat on her.”The last message had been deleted. She rolled her eyes and looked away. He grabbed her hand, his fingers digging into her wrist. Eveline’s eyes sharpened as she faced him. She wanted to slap him across the cheek. To scream and yell at him. But they were seated in an outdoor café three minutes from the clinic. She couldn’t afford to ruin her reputation. She dug into the pockets of her scrubs and placed the ring on the table. “Here. I don’t know how much you bought it, but I’m sure you get a half-refund.”“Please,” he clung to her hand as she tried to pull away, t
