Phina’s POV

Hockey Practice Starts By Nine

“Phina.”

Someone shook my shoulder.

I groaned and pulled the blanket over my head.

“Go away.”

“Phina, wake up.”

“Unless the building is on fire, I don't care.”

A laugh followed.

Definitely not a fire.

I curled tighter beneath the blanket, determined to enjoy the first peaceful morning I'd had in weeks.

Then my roommate said something that made me open one eye.

“Your boyfriend is here.”

“My what?”

“Your boyfriend.”

“I don't have a boyfriend.

Chapter 11Phina's POVHis Mate“I'm sorry. What?”He shrugged, looking entirely too pleased with himself.“I'm asking a question.”“And I'm wondering whether you hit your head on the way here.”“Have you seen your boo—”He stopped. His mouth snapped shut. Then he started coughing. Not a polite little cough. An aggressive, chest-rattling fit that forced him to turn away from me.I stared at him.He coughed again. Then again. From behind me came a sound that could only be described as a dying seal.Amara.She had followed me into the corridor and was now bent over, laughing so hard she could barely breathe.“Oh, my God!” she wheezed. “He actually—”“Finish that sentence,” I warned her, “and I'll push you down the stairs.”She held up both hands, still laughing.Leander finally straightened, clearing his throat. His ears were red.I noticed. He noticed me noticing. And because the universe apparently hated me, his smirk returned.“Something funny, bumblebee?”I folded my arms.“Nothing.

The fabric stretch

Chapter NinePhina's POV Amara"Don't make me regret it."The door clicked shut behind him.I stared at it for a moment."Don't make me regret it," I repeated under my breath, mimicking his deep voice. "As if I woke up this morning and decided to become your personal financial burden."I dropped my bag onto the nearest bed. Then I paused. Was it actually mine?I looked at the other two beds, suddenly uncertain. The one nearest the window had a neatly folded blanket at its foot, while the bed across from it was bare except for a pillow. The third, tucked behind the wooden partition, looked untouched.Three beds. Two missing roommates. And one very expensive room I had no idea how to pay for.I sighed and lowered myself onto the edge of the bed nearest me.The mattress dipped beneath my weight. For a few seconds, I allowed myself to enjoy it.No loan sharks knocking on the door. No landlord threatening to throw our belongings onto the street. No sound of my mother's alarm going off bef

Chapter Eight Phina’s POVSettling Down In My SpaceThe walk to the accommodation wing was supposed to be quiet. At least, that was what I had hoped for when Leander stepped out of the porter’s office and motioned for me to follow him.Unfortunately, the man seemed physically incapable of leaving me alone with my thoughts.Or perhaps he simply enjoyed irritating me.Either way, I was beginning to regret every decision that had brought me to Veyra University. The scholarship. The contract. The principal with his cryptic statements about wolves. The porter who spoke about clans and keys as though I had somehow missed an entire civilization while growing up.And now, Leander. The school’s “top boy” with the attitude of a king and the communication skills of a brick wall.I adjusted the strap of my bag and hurried to catch up with him."You didn't have to do that."He didn't look at me. "Do what?""Pay for my accommodation.""You're welcome."I stopped walking. He took another two steps

Chapter SevenPhina’s POVMystery “Can you stop speaking in riddles for five minutes?”“Can you stop assuming every offer of help is an attempt to control you?”I fall silent. For one brief moment, neither of us speaks. He’s right about one thing. I don’t know what to make of any of this.I don’t know why Veyra selected me when I never applied. I don’t know why the principal looked at me as if I were a problem he’d been expecting. I don’t know why everyone keeps saying words like clan and mate as though I’m supposed to understand them. And I certainly don’t know why Leander looks at me as if my inability to afford a room is somehow a personal tragedy. But I know what it feels like to owe people money.I know what it feels like when a favour becomes a weapon.I’ve watched my mother work until her body could barely carry her home. I’ve watched her count money at the kitchen table, moving the same notes around as if rearranging them could somehow make them multiply.I will not become an

Chapter SixPhina’s POVAccommodation “W-, wolf?” I stare at the both of them trying to wrap my head around what I just heard. “Is that what he identifies as or something?”Leander has this amused look on his face, like he’s trying to restrain himself from laughing out loud. The principal on the other hand doesn’t seem too excited. If anything he seems annoyed in a calm way.“Rachel didn’t tell you now, did she?” He slumps back into his chair. Like there could be any logical explanation my mother could possibly give me for the words he just said. “You know my mother?” I squint at him. “We all know ourselves.”“That’s enough sire. You’re frightening her.” Leander shifts from the doorframe he’s been leaning on, he’s standing now. “With time, she’ll learn what she has to. But you can’t info dump on her, she’s not going to assimilate all of it.”“I usually don’t like to agree with you Leander, for this case, unfortunately, I will.”“Come on.” He’s at the door now. I stand up, the co
