Victoria's POV (Ethan's mum)

My phone rang at eleven thirty at night. The number on the screen said it was Ethan.

"Do you know what time it is?" I answered, already annoyed.

"Mom, I need you," Ethan's voice was shaking. "I need you to come to the hospital. Now."

I sat up in bed, suddenly wide awake. "What happened? Are you hurt?"

"It's Adriana," he said. "She's trying to divorce me."

Divorce? I felt a surge of satisfaction mixed with rage. I knew from the beginning that girl was no good for my son.

"I'll be there in twenty minutes," I said, already getting out of bed.

Twenty-three minutes later, I walked into County General Hospital wearing my best dress and pearls. Even in the middle of the night, I wasn't going to let that girl see me looking anything less than perfect.

Ethan met me in the hallway outside Room 304. He looked terrible. His eyes were red, his hair was a mess, and his clothes were wrinkled.

"Mom," he said, grabbing my hands. "Thank goodness you're here."

  • My Hockey Star Ex-husband's Regret   013: Ethan's denial

Ethan's POV I stared at Adriana, waiting for her to take back those stupid words. Waiting for her to realize how ridiculous she was being. But she just looked at me with those cold, empty eyes."Let go of my hand," she said quietly."Not until you listen to me," I said, tightening my grip. "You're not thinking clearly. You just lost a baby. You're emotional.""I said let go."Something in her voice made me release her hand. She pulled it back against her chest like I burned her."You can't leave me," I repeated. "You have nothing, Adriana. No job that pays anything. No family that wants you. No money of your own.""You don't know what I have," she said."I know exactly what you have," I said. "A part-time job at a bookstore that barely covers groceries. A house you live in that belongs to me and a car that's in my name.""Material things," she said dismissively."Material things that you need to survive," I corrected. "What are you going to do without me? Where are you going to live?

  • My Hockey Star Ex-husband's Regret   012: Demanding divorce

Adriana’s POV "I want a divorce, and I never want to see either of you again."For a moment after I said those words, nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The only sound was the steady beep of the machines beside my bed.Ethan stared at me as if I spoke a foreign language. "What?""You heard me," I said, my voice steady despite the tears on my face. "I want a divorce.""Adriana, you're upset…" Ethan started."I'm not upset," I interrupted him. "I'm done.""You don't mean that," he said, taking a step toward my bed."I've never meant anything more in my life," I said, meeting his eyes. "Our marriage is over."Vivienne cleared her throat. "Maybe I should give you two some privacy—""No," I said sharply. "Stay. I want you both to hear this."Ethan's face was white. "Adriana, you're in shock. You just lost a baby. You're not thinking clearly.""I'm thinking more clearly than I have in years," I said. "Today showed me exactly what our marriage really is.""What are you talking about?""You saved h

  • My Hockey Star Ex-husband's Regret   011: Vivienne's defense

Adriana's POV "Well," Vivienne said, her voice smooth as silk. "That was quite a story, Adriana."She stepped into the room slowly, her hospital gown flowing around her like she was walking down a runway instead of limping from her own injuries. "Vivienne," Ethan said, immediately moving towards her. "You shouldn't be walking around. You need to rest.""I heard shouting," she said softly, her voice trembling with just the right amount of worry. "I was concerned about you both."The way she said "you both" made my skin crawl. Like she actually cared about me."How much did you hear?" I asked, my voice flat."Enough," Vivienne said, moving closer to Ethan's side. "Enough to be very worried about you, Adriana.""Worried about me?""Grief can do terrible things to a person's mind," Vivienne said, her voice gentle and professional. Like she was talking to a mental patient. "Losing a baby is traumatic. It can make people say things they don't mean. Create elaborate fantasies to cope with

  • My Hockey Star Ex-husband's Regret   010: The truth

Adriana's POV "She took credit for everything I did!"Ethan stared at me like I'd lost my mind."What are you talking about?" he asked."Your recovery," I said, pushing myself up straighter in the hospital bed. Pain shot through my ribs, but I ignored it. "All those expensive treatments you got. All those specialists who said they could help you walk again. Who do you think paid for that?"Ethan's face twisted with disbelief. "The insurance covered most of it. And Vivienne arranged for the rest through hospital programs—""No, she didn't." My voice was getting raised, fueled by months of buried anger. "I paid for it! All of it!!""Right," Ethan said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Adriana Nelson, the bookstore clerk, paid for hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical treatments.""Dr. Harrison in Switzerland," I continued, ignoring his mocking tone. "The one who did your spinal fusion surgery. Two hundred thousand dollars.""Vivienne arranged that—""With what money, Ethan?" I i

  • My Hockey Star Ex-husband's Regret   009: Accusing each other

Ethan's POV I stared at my wife's back as she turned away from me. She pulled the blanket up to her chin and ignored me completely. Like I wasn't even in the room.Pregnant. How could she be pregnant and never tell me?Anger burned in my chest. How could she keep something like that from me? How could she hide the fact that she was carrying a baby?Unless..."When were you going to tell me?" I asked, moving closer to her bed. "Or were you ever going to tell me?"Adriana didn't move. She kept her face buried in the pillow and her shoulders were shaking with silent crying."I know you can hear me," I said, making my voice harder. "You can't just ignore me forever."But she still didn't move or say anything back. The silence made my anger worse. Here I was, finding out my wife was pregnant from a doctor, and she wouldn't even look at me."You know what I think?" I said, moving around to the other side of the bed so I could see her face. "I think you never planned to tell me at all."Tha
