MIA

I couldn’t stop hearing it.

That soft, breathy moan kept playing in my head long after I left the gym. Even while I cooked dinner, even while Ryan talked about some meeting, the sound sat right behind my ears. By the time we got into bed I felt restless and warm in a way I hadn’t felt in months.

Ryan was already scrolling on his phone. I shifted closer, rested my hand on his chest, and slid it slowly downward.

He didn’t look up. “What are you doing?”

“I just… I missed you,” I said quietly.

He finally glanced at me, then at my body under the thin tank top. His mouth twisted.

“Not tonight, Mia. I’m tired. And honestly, looking at that stomach doesn’t exactly put me in the mood.”

The words landed like a slap. I pulled my hand back.

He rolled onto his side, facing away from me. “Go to sleep.”

I stared at the ceiling for a long time, the moan still echoing, mixed now with his cruel voice. Sleep came late and shallow.

The next afternoon Ryan dropped me at the gym the same way he always did—quick, distracted, already on a call. I walked inside with my bag clutched tight. My shoulders felt tight. Every time I blinked I saw Jake’s calm face and heard that quiet offer again: You’re allowed to look.

Jake was waiting near the private room. He gave me a short nod.

“Ready?”

“Yeah.”

We went in. He locked the door out of habit and started the session the way he always did—light warm-up, then rows. At first everything felt normal. His instructions were short and clear.

“Elbows in.”
“Don’t shrug.”
“Again.”

But after the third set his hands started correcting me more. When I leaned too far forward he stepped behind me and placed both palms on my waist, guiding me back.

“Right here,” he said, voice low. “Feel the difference?”

I nodded, but my skin felt too warm under his hands. He kept them there a second longer than necessary before letting go.

Later, during squats, he stood close again. One hand settled on the middle of my back, the other lightly on my hip to keep me from tipping.

“Chest up. That’s it.”

I tried to focus on the movement, but every place he touched stayed hot. I forced my face to stay blank. I didn’t want him to notice how nervous I suddenly felt.

We moved to the mat for core work. I was halfway through a set of controlled sit-ups when a knock sounded on the door.

Sophie’s bright voice came through. “Jake? Can you come here for a second? I need your help with the pull-up bar.”

Jake looked at me. “Give me a minute.”

He opened the door. From where I sat I could see the hallway mirror clearly. Sophie stood there in a tight sports bra and tiny shorts, smiling up at him. Her stomach was flat. Her waist looked small enough for his hands to wrap around easily.

“The bar feels loose,” she said. “Can you check?”

Jake stepped out. He didn’t close the door all the way. I watched through the gap and the mirror as he tested the bar, then turned to Sophie.

“Want me to spot you?”

She nodded and reached up. Jake’s hands settled on her waist—firm, sure—and he lifted her like she weighed nothing. Sophie pulled her chin over the bar easily while he held her steady, his fingers spanning her narrow sides. They both laughed when she dropped back down.

“See? Light as air,” he said, still smiling.

Sophie grinned and gave his arm a playful push. “Only because you’re strong.”

I looked down at my own body. Soft stomach, full hips, thick thighs that still felt heavy even after weeks of training. The difference sat in my chest like a stone. Jake could lift her without effort. The same hands that had just been on my waist had moved her like she was nothing.

I stayed on the mat, pretending to stretch, until Jake came back inside and closed the door.

He clapped his hands once, back to business. “All right. Two more sets.”

I nodded and got into position, but my mind stayed out in the hallway. Every time his hands returned to correct me I felt the comparison sharper. His touch was the same, but now I couldn’t stop thinking how different my body must feel under those same palms.

When the session ended I packed my bag faster than usual.

Jake watched me for a second. “You okay today? You seem quiet.”

“I’m fine,” I said. The words came out flat. “Just tired.”

I walked out past the main floor. Sophie was still near the pull-up bar, talking to another girl. She looked effortless. I kept my eyes on the exit and didn’t look back.

Outside, Ryan’s car was already waiting. I slid into the passenger seat without a word. He didn’t ask how it went. He just pulled into traffic and started talking about dinner plans with some clients.

I stared out the window, the image of Jake’s hands on Sophie’s small waist stuck behind my eyes, and the soft moan from yesterday mixed with Ryan’s voice from last night until I couldn’t tell which one hurt more.

MIARyan told me about the dinner only two hours before we had to leave.“It’s important,” he said while buttoning his shirt. “My boss will be there. A few clients too. Just wear something nice and don’t make it weird.”I looked at the black dress hanging in the closet. It was the only thing that still fit without pulling too tight across my stomach. “I don’t feel well tonight.”He glanced at me in the mirror. “You’ll be fine. Just smile and stay quiet if you don’t know what to say.”That was how I ended up in the passenger seat, hands clenched in my lap, while Ryan drove toward the restaurant. The place was upscale—soft lights, white tablecloths, quiet music. When we walked in, several people already stood near the bar. Then I saw her.Lena wore a red dress that hugged every curve and stopped mid-thigh. Her hair fell in loose waves, makeup perfect. She looked like she belonged under these lights. Ryan’s face changed the moment he noticed her. He walked straight over, arms open.“Lena

MIAI got to the gym twenty minutes early on purpose. Ryan had dropped me off again with another short comment about “not wasting Jake’s time,” then driven away. The parking lot was still half empty. I sat in the passenger seat of my own thoughts for a full minute before forcing myself out of the car.Inside, the main floor already had a few regulars. Three women near the squat racks glanced over when the door closed behind me. One of them—tall, dark ponytail, perfect posture—let her eyes travel from my face down to my soft stomach and back up again. She didn’t smile. Neither did the other two. They just turned back to their weights like I wasn’t worth the effort of a second look.My face burned. I kept my head down and walked straight toward the hallway that led to the private room. Jake had given me the code last session so I could wait inside if I arrived first. I punched it in, slipped through the door, and shut it quietly behind me.The room smelled the same—clean mats and faint

MIAThe kitchen still smelled like roasted chicken and garlic when we sat down. Ryan had insisted on a “proper family dinner” the moment Jake texted that he was free. I set the last dish on the table and took the chair across from my husband. Jake sat to my right, close enough that I could catch the faint scent of his soap every time he moved.Ryan poured himself a glass of water and looked at me over the rim.“So,” he said, “how was the gym?”I kept my eyes on my plate. “Harder than I expected.”He let out a short laugh. “Harder? You’ve only been twice. What exactly is hard about walking on a treadmill?”“It’s not just walking,” I said. “There’s form and weights and—”“And excuses.” Ryan cut a piece of chicken with more force than necessary. “I knew you’d start complaining the second it got uncomfortable.”Jake stayed quiet. He took a slow sip of water and watched the exchange like it was nothing new.I tried again. “I’m not complaining. I’m just saying it’s more than I thought.”Rya

MIA The private room felt smaller once the door closed behind us. Soft light came from the ceiling panels, and the mirrors on the far wall reflected every movement. I stood near the mat with my arms crossed, trying not to look at myself. Jake walked over to the first machine and rested one hand on the padded seat. “We’ll start simple today,” he said. “Nothing heavy. I just want you to learn the equipment so you feel comfortable next time.” I nodded. My voice still felt stuck somewhere in my throat. He gestured for me to sit. I lowered myself onto the seat, careful not to meet his eyes for too long. Jake crouched beside me and adjusted the pin on the weight stack. “Hands here,” he said, guiding my fingers to the handles. His palms were warm and steady against the back of my hands. “Keep your back straight. Pull the bar toward your chest, then let it go slow. Don’t rush.” I did as he said. The movement felt awkward at first. My arms shook a little even though the weight was light

MIAThe alarm went off at six-thirty, but I was already awake. I had been staring at the ceiling for almost an hour, listening to the soft snoring beside me and trying to convince myself that today would be fine. It wasn’t.Ryan rolled over and stretched, then sat up like he had been waiting for this moment.“Get up,” he said. “Jake’s expecting you at eight.”I pulled the blanket higher. “I don’t want to go.”He laughed under his breath, the same short sound he always made when he thought I was being dramatic. “We already talked about this. You’re going.”“I don’t feel comfortable around him,” I said quietly. “He’s your brother. I’ve never even been alone with him for more than five minutes.”Ryan stood up and walked to the closet. He pulled out a pair of my old black leggings and a loose T-shirt, then tossed them onto the bed.“Relax,” he said. “He’s not going to be tempted by that body.”The words landed harder than I expected. I stared at the clothes, my throat tight. He said it so
