Nala

Age: 20

My day starts like any other, though today I have something to look forward to: the weekend. Friday will be busier than any other day, but it will just make it go by faster. I also love my work as a social worker.

Being small and unthreatening helps a lot when I'm working with scared and abused children. It also helps that I can relate to them, as I come from a home where I was heavily abused by my father.

Those memories are things I'd rather forget, but they come in handy at times too. Perhaps that's why I can easily joke about it now. They still hurt, with lingering nightmares haunting me, but what can I do? Life can never be so simple.

After taking a quick shower to refresh myself and putting on dress pants and a button-up shirt, I walk over to my small kitchen and start frying some scrambled eggs. It's all habit, which is by design. Otherwise, I'd forget to eat at all.

My apartment may be small and cheap, but I don't need that much space either. It's also all I can afford on my hourly wage while I take online classes to earn my bachelor's degree one course at a time.

It has all the essentials I need: a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and living room. Many people around me always make a big deal about needing more space or new things, but is it really necessary?

I eat in the living room if I'm not on the go, so I don't need a dining room. The bedroom is big enough for a queen-sized bed, and the closet has enough room for my clothes. The bathroom fits my needs well too, with a single sink, mirror, and small shower. The kitchen doesn't have a lot of counter space, but it has a working stove, fridge, and microwave.

I don't plan on entertaining anyone in this space, so why make a big deal out of it? I check my phone and crack a smile when I see texts and pictures sent by my best friend, Kyla Brooks. Now she's the one who voices her opinions on my living arrangements loud and clear.

The two of us are an unlikely pair, seeing as she's a drop-dead gorgeous model while I'm a plain-looking social worker, but we get along well, all things considered. We've been friends for many years now, and Ky always has my back.

Of course, she wants to throw money around and buy me everything too, but I always reject the offers. I never want to be a burden to her, and now that I'm an adult and not just her playmate, I want to stand tall on my own.

"Text me before you leave! Owen's taking me on a nice spa date today. Kisses~!" Ky had sent along with a picture of them together in bed, Ky posing with duck lips and a wink while her lover, Owen, sleeps soundly beside her shirtless.

I shake my head and sigh. Ky can also be very cringey at times, but I love her all the same. I don't know what I'd do without her. I finish eating and grab my briefcase as I head out the door.

"On my way now! Have fun on your date, and make sure to get your nails glittery and pink."

I click send after adding a kissing emoji and sit down at the bus stop.

My morning route isn't too bad, especially since the bus I take doesn't get overly crowded in the morning. I sit in the same place, two seats from the front, and look out the window with music playing in my ears from my old CD player.

There isn't much to see, but I enjoy the peacefulness of it all. Trying to get a car now wouldn't be cost-effective, and while Ky always offers to buy me one, I can't accept it. Not only because it's an expensive gift, but also because I can't afford to pay for insurance right now.

Rich people will never understand the struggles of people like me. Ky means well, I know, but I can't depend on her either. I need to stand on my own two feet and prove to myself that I can handle being alone.

I spot my stop coming up and pull on the bar to let the driver know I need to get off. As I step off, I wave goodbye.

"Have a good morning! See you Monday, Jeff," I say politely before beginning my walk to the Family and Child Services building where I work.

It's the same thing every workday, but I wouldn't change it for anything. I truly love my simple life, and the greatest joy I receive in life is at work. It can be depressing, but it's also rewarding. I love helping children get out of bad situations.

As I step inside, I'm greeted by warm welcomes from my coworkers. Before I can make my way to my cubicle, my boss, Timothy Rosenberg, stops me.

"Good morning, Natalia. Would you please come with me?"

I tilt my head curiously and nod.

"Of course! Lead the way, Mr. Rosenberg."

I follow him into his office. My mind races as I wonder if I've done something wrong.

Once Tim shuts his door, he smiles at me.

"Calm down, Ms. Oka. You're not in trouble. I wish to congratulate you! Because of your fantastic work in the field the other day, you'll be receiving a promotion as well as a raise."

I blink before smiling happily.

"Really? Mr. Rosenberg, you scared me!"

I giggle softly and take the paper he offers. Excitement rushes through me as I skim it over. I'm finally not just a junior family advocate anymore!

"Usually this doesn't happen until you earn your bachelor's degree, but you've been doing so well that I decided to give it to you ahead of schedule."

Tim smiles warmly, pleased by my excitement.

"I know the pay isn't much, but I promise that once you do gain that degree, you'll earn another raise on top of that."

I hug the paper and shake my head.

"That's okay, Tim. Thank you so much for believing in me. You have no idea how much I've dreamed of this."

Sure, going from $13 to $15 an hour isn't much to most people, but for someone like me, it just means more savings and emergency funds. I keep myself on a strict budget, so it all works out perfectly.

"If you say so, Natalia."

Tim smiles.

"You can go now. Keep up the good work! You always do so well with all the kids, no matter what age."

He turns and goes back to his desk.

"T-thank you very much," I say, dipping my head.

My face burns at the flattery, and I quickly turn and leave his office.

I can't help grinning from ear to ear. Nothing can ruin this wonderful day now.

  • My Husband's First Love Returned   Chapter 20

Nala As I step into the Winters' mansion, I'm immediately overwhelmed by the decor and the grandeur of it all. Sure, I see Ky's mansion all the time, but I'm used to her bright, hot-pink everything and interesting style. This place is on a whole other level, but i don't think it's for the better. Everything is without personality: blank white and gray with gold accents from the light fixtures. I don't see a single family picture, either. It's like walking into a clean, sterile doctor's office, devoid of anything personal. "Welcome." I jump at the sudden voice and look up to see aman in a dark suit standing in front of me. He bows politely. "I believe it's Natalia, correct? My name is Robert, the butler who works for the Winters. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." As I stare at the old man, I quickly realize I'm way out of my element. My nerves get the better of me, and I nod slowly. "T-thank you, sir... I-I'll be in your care then." Robert nods and motions for me t

  • My Husband's First Love Returned   Chapter 19

Going out in public has become a pain, but I can't stay in the office or my own home any longer. I want freedom more than anything, so I decide to go out. Plus, I don't want to be home when Natalia moves in. As I get into the car, I take note of the new driver. I fired the last one, much to Grandmother's annoyance, and a new one came in quickly. "Where would you like to go, Young Master?" the driver asks curiously. He's much younger than the last one. "Oh, pardon me. My name is Clayton, and I'll be your evening driver from now on." I shrug and lean back. "Velvet Noir," I say bluntly. It isn't a place with great memories, but at least I won't have to deal with paparazzi inside. I need a strong drink anyway. Clayton nods politely and starts driving without asking any questions. Good. At least I can have some peace and quiet so I can wallow in my own misery. What set me off the most today was Grandmother suggesting that I buy Natalia and me wedding bands. "It will make it official,

  • My Husband's First Love Returned   Chapter 18

Nala After agreeing to the marriage, the next few days pass in a blur. Before I can question anything, Ivan's grandmother drags us to a courthouse, and after a small ceremony and signing some papers, I'm suddenly Natalia Winters. "We'll have a real ceremony in a few months," Grandmother explains in an excited tone while I stare at the marriage certificate in disbelief. "This is more of a formality so that I know Ivan won't go behind my back." Ivan growls under his breath and glares out the window. "I never had a choice in the matter to begin with." He turns his glare on me, making me flinch. "What we really need is a contract drawn up so she won't try anything." I quickly look down and shake my head. "I-I don't need anything..." I whisper, closing my eyes. He hates me. Ivan hates me. My childhood friend wants nothing more than to drop me and never look at me again. Why has it come to this? "Oh, stop it already," Ivan's grandmother scolds him. "She can have whatever she wants wit

Nala As I start to stir, I hear two voices, one angry and the other stern. I open my eyes, finding myself in an unfamiliar bedroom, and look over to see Ivan and an old woman. As memories of our first meeting flood back to me, I subconsciously whisper, "Nini..." before their words finally reach my ears. "It's merely the child you want!" Ivan's tone is dark and hateful. "I don't see why we can't just take the baby after it's born! Why do I have to give up my life and the woman I love?! How's that fair?!" My heart begins to pound hard in my chest. That's right! How do they already know about my pregnancy? I was never going to tell them and just quietly raise the child on my own. "Yes, we could do that. It would be very simple too," the old woman says, tapping her cane on the ground. "Even easier so..." "N-no...!" I say without thinking, their eyes snapping in my direction. I start to breathe heavily once more and hug myself tightly. They want me to give away or kill my baby? I wo

  • My Husband's First Love Returned   Chapter 16

Ivan As I sit in my living room, I can't help but be in a daze. Everything feels so far away, and I'm mostly numb to it all. How did it come to this? I barely remember even getting home. Grandmother's words still echo in my mind. "Don't you dare do anything to the woman carrying my great-grandbaby." I wish this could be nothing more than a nightmare. The bitch got knocked up from that night? How do we know it's mine? Then I remember the blood on the sheets and bury my face in my hands. If Grandmother wasn't completely certain, she wouldn't have brought her here after she fainted. I can still see the dull fear in her eyes, one that didn't see me for who I am at all. It's a fear that can't be fake, one I know very well. I've seen it and been through it so many times. Just arriving home was chaos, with everyone trying to figure out what was going on while Grandmother barked orders about Natalia. As I look around, I spot Robert doing everything she told him. Is he one of her spies t

  • My Husband's First Love Returned   Chapter 15

Nala Age: 6 That morning, Daddy picks out a pretty black dress for me and dresses me up to his liking. My hair is put into high pigtails with a matching headdress on my head. With long white stockings and black shoes, the look is complete. "You suit the Lolita style perfectly, Nat," Daddy murmurs, adding some bows to my pigtails. "It makes me not want anyone else to see you. You're just so pretty..." I shift slightly, feeling uncomfortable at his tone and the odd look on his face. I don't ever understand what he's talking about. I just don't want to get in trouble. "T-thank you, Da... I-I... very happy..." I whisper. Daddy nods and grabs his wallet. "Be good now. Don't cause any trouble, and you won't be punished." He takes my hand and leads me outside. I stumble slightly but don't fall. That would make him mad, and I don't want that today. As we walk down the street, I try to stay close to Daddy. I don't feel safe with him normally, but he is all I know. "Don't bother anyone

Nala "I don't know about this, Ky," I say nervously inside a fitting room. "I feel like I need a jacket or something. Or at least some leggings." I hug myself tightly. "Nonsense! I'm sure you look lovely, so come on out and let me see what it looks like," Ky calls out cheerfully, making me sigh.

Nala I'm just getting out of work when I check my phone. Many texts and missed calls from Ky greet me, which immediately worries me. I get to the bus stop and dial her number. "About time, little whore!" Ky's cheerful and happy tone greets me on the line. It's slightly muffled by wind noises so I

Ivan My day starts like any other, to the point of boredom. I ring a bell next to my bed, and a maid walks inside, pushing a cart with my breakfast. Today's meal consists of eggs Benedict, smoked salmon, and a side of fresh summer fruit. My favorite thing here, though, is the plain black coffee,

Nala Age: 26 I look down at the man kneeling before me. As whispers ring out around us, I can't help but feel embarrassed by it all. "Stand up, Mr. Winters. You're making everyone uncomfortable." As my ex-husband looks up, I see desperate tears in his eyes. "Nala, please... give me another cha
