Elena

“Why are you still rotting in bed?!”

My mother-in-law’s sharp screech shattered the morning quiet as she threw my bedroom door wide open. I slowly opened my eyes, rubbing my face and sitting up against the headboard, adopting the weary, broken look of a grieving widow.

“Get up,” she snapped, crossing her arms. “We have urgent preparations to make.”

“Preparations for what, Mother?” I asked weakly.

“Is that how a dutiful wife behaves?!” she yelled, stepping close to my bed. “We need to discuss how we are laying my son’s body to rest!”

I blinked, processing her words. In my past life, no one had asked for my input on anything—they had simply handed me a pile of forged debts.

“I’ll be right down, Mother,” I murmured submissively. “Just give me a few minutes to dress.”

“Be fast. We don’t have all day.” She turned and marched out, slamming the door behind her.

The moment she left, I grabbed my phone from under the pillow and shot a rapid text to Roxy:

“Can you do me a favour?”

Roxy’s reply popped up instantly: “Anything. Name it.”

“Go straight to my late father’s family lawyer. Tell him I need him here in person this morning—I want to start the process of transferring the estate back into my name. I am reclaiming everything that belongs to me.”

“Okay,” Roxy texted back. “See you in a bit.”

I dropped the phone on the nightstand, stepped into the bathroom, and took a long, hot shower. I carefully picked out a stunning, high-collared black dress, applied a light layer of makeup to emphasize my pale, delicate features, and checked my reflection. I looked fragile, elegant, and completely harmless.

I walked downstairs into the formal living room. The entire family was seated around the glass table, though Adrian was nowhere to be seen.

“What is Vivian still doing here?” I asked softly, taking an armchair across from them.

“She is family,” Lucas answered smoothly, offering me a comforting smile.

“Family?” I raised an eyebrow, adjusting my sleeves. “Since when did Mother’s distant cousin become so deeply involved in our private household matters?”

“That is enough!” my mother-in-law cut in sharply. “I invited her to stay!”

Vivian rolled her eyes, leaning back on the sofa with a smug smile that said she considered herself the true mistress of the house.

I lowered my gaze, letting a soft, fake tear slip down my cheek. “I... I’m sorry,” I whispered, sounding utterly broken. “I didn’t mean to sound harsh. I just... I’ve lost the love of my life, and my head is spinning.”

Vivian smirked, clearly satisfied with my pathetic display. "Enough with the theatrics. We didn't come here to watch you cry."

I looked around the room, letting my voice quiver with heartbreaking sorrow. “Before we discuss Adrian’s burial,” I spoke up, wiping my eyes with a silk handkerchief, “there is something very important I need to confess to all of you.”

My mother-in-law frowned. “What are you talking about?”

Right on cue, the doorbell chimed through the house.

“That would be for me,” I said softly, rising from the armchair. “I hope you don’t mind—I asked someone to join us this morning.”

I opened the door myself. Roxy stood on the front step, and beside her, a silver-haired man in a sharp gray suit, a leather folder tucked under his arm.

“Mr. Whitfield,” I said, stepping aside to let them in. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”

“Of course, Mrs. Hart,” he said gently. “Given the circumstances, I thought it best to explain things in person.”

I led them into the living room. My mother-in-law’s face had already begun to shift from confusion to alarm.

“Who is this man?” she demanded.

“My late father’s attorney,” I said, taking my seat again. “He’s handled our family’s estate matters for over thirty years.”

Mr. Whitfield gave a polite nod to the room before opening his folder. “I understand this is a difficult morning for the family, and I apologize for the intrusion. But given the... sensitive timing, I felt it important that everyone hear this directly from me, rather than secondhand.”

“Hear what?” my father-in-law snapped.

“This estate,” Mr. Whitfield said calmly, “was placed in a trust by Mrs. Hart’s late father at the time of the original purchase. Mr. Blackwood’s name was added to the deed as co-owner, but the trust itself contains a standard reversion clause—one I confirmed again this morning, in light of yesterday’s tragedy.” He glanced toward me with something like quiet sympathy. “In the event of the co-owner’s death, full ownership of the estate, along with any associated accounts, reverts automatically to the original beneficiary. Mrs. Hart, in this case.”

The room went utterly still.

“That’s—that can’t be right,” my father-in-law stammered. “The deed lists Adrian as sole owner!”

“The deed reflects title,” Mr. Whitfield said, unbothered. “The trust governs beneficial ownership. I assure you, the paperwork is quite clear, and quite binding.” He closed the folder. “As of yesterday afternoon, this house, and everything in it, belongs to Mrs. Hart.”

“WHAT?!”

Every single one of them leapt to their feet in absolute horror, their faces draining of color as a stranger in a gray suit calmly dismantled their grand scheme to pieces.

They had killed Adrian on paper to steal from me in peace. They had no idea they’d just handed me back everything they’d spent years taking.

ElenaI woke up feeling completely refreshed.Months had passed since that fateful day of retribution, and my new life had officially begun. I got out of bed, took a warm bath, and dressed in a sharp, tailored suit fitting for the Chairwoman I now was. As I picked up my handbag, my phone screen lit up with a notification:【Good morning! How are you feeling today?】I smiled warmly as I read Roxy’s text. Ever since everything went down, she had made sure to send me a message like this every single morning.【I’m doing wonderful, thank you. Have a great day!】 I typed back before slipping my phone into my purse.I walked down the grand marble staircase, where my new housekeeper greeted me with a polite bow.“Good morning, Chairwoman. Your breakfast is prepared.”“Thank you,” I replied, enjoying a quick, quiet meal before stepping out to my car.It was my original luxury car—the one Adrian thought he had hidden away in his friend’s garage. Kane made sure every single piece of property stole

Elena“I’m sorry! Elena, I’m so sorry!” Adrian suddenly sobbed, reaching out to grab the hem of my dress. He pointed a trembling, bloody finger at Vivian. “It was her! That bitch forced me into this! You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved!”I stared at him with complete disdain. That wasn’t what he said when he stood over my deathbed.“How dare you, Adrian?!” Vivian shrieked, snapping her head toward him. “You were the one who crawled back to me after I divorced my ex! You begged me to take you back! You told me you hated Elena and wanted her dead! You planned all of this, and now you’re blaming me?!”I stood back with my arms crossed, watching the two lovers tear each other to shreds.Idiots.“Lucas!” I called out suddenly. The entire room froze. Adrian, Eleanor, and Vivian all whipped their heads toward the front entrance in panic. After a long silence, I let out a soft laugh. “Oh. He’s not coming. I was the one who handed the evidence to the police and put him behind bars.”Eleanor

Elena“What do you mean?” Adrian stammered from the floor. “Why are you sitting next to him? Get up!”I tilted my head back and laughed. It started as a soft chuckle, then burst into full, hysterical laughter until tears welled in the corners of my eyes. I clutched my stomach, savoring every second of their complete bewilderment.“What the hell is so funny?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking. “You bitch!”My laughter died instantly. I turned a gaze colder than ice onto her. “Bitch? You’re referring to yourself, right?”“How dare you!” she screamed, taking a step back.“Mother,” I called out, my tone dripping with bitter irony. “Didn’t you tell me Vivian was just your distant cousin? How on earth did she end up as Adrian’s mistress?”“I am not a mistress!” Vivian cut in sharply, clutching Adrian’s arm. “I am his wife!”“Then what does that make me?” I asked smoothly.“The unloved one is always the mistress,” she spat back.“I suppose you’re right,” I said casually, inspecting my fin

ElenaBefore Adrian could take another step toward the door, the front entrance was kicked open with a deafening crash.Kane strolled into the foyer, flanked by a dozen burly men armed with iron bars and handguns. The shock on Adrian’s face was pure poetry.“Well, well,” Kane’s low voice echoed off the high ceilings. “Isn’t that Adrian Blackwood? I thought dead men were supposed to stay buried.”Adrian froze, his face draining of color as he instinctively shoved Vivian behind his back. “M-Mr. Kane...”From the shadows near the stairs, a surge of dark triumph rushed through me. Roxy hadn’t failed me after all—she had sent Kane directly to the house to intercept Adrian before he could flee!My phone vibrated silently in my palm. A text from Roxy appeared:【Sorry to keep you waiting! My dad had a sudden emergency, but Kane and his men should be arriving right now. Is he there?】I quickly typed back:【Yes. He just walked in. Thank you for everything—I’ll take it from here.】“Why are you h

Elena“Mother,” Vivian said nervously. “What are you talking about?”Eleanor snapped her head around, glaring at Vivian with cold, vicious hatred. It was the first time Eleanor had ever looked at her like that, and Vivian instinctively took a step back.“Don’t you dare call me mother!” Eleanor hissed. “My son is sitting in a prison cell, and you think I’m going to let you and Adrian live happily ever after?”“I am so sick of this!” Adrian shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. He ripped off his cap and ran a hand through his hair—a habit he always had when he was pushed to the edge.“I told you last time!” Adrian yelled, glaring at Eleanor. “I gave you money to pay off his mess before. I told you if he screwed up again, I wouldn’t lift a finger to help him! You dragged me back here because of that useless loser!”“That ‘loser’ is your brother!” Eleanor cried, her voice cracking. “Your younger brother!”“So what? I can’t do anything for him!” Adrian snapped. “He was caught red-hand

ElenaI sat by my bedroom window long past midnight, watching the driveway for headlights that never came. Adrian didn’t return that night.By the time exhaustion finally dragged me into a shallow, restless sleep, the sky had begun turning gray. I woke a few hours later to the smell of toasted bread and fresh tea drifting up through my door.I dressed slowly and made my way downstairs. Eleanor was waiting at the bottom of the staircase, an apron tied neatly around her waist, a warm smile plastered across her face as if the night before had never happened.“There you are, sweet girl,” she cooed, taking my hands in hers. “I made you breakfast. Come, sit.”She guided me to the table, where a full spread waited—eggs, fresh bread, fruit, a steaming cup of tea.She pulled out my chair herself, fussing over the placement of my napkin like a woman auditioning for the role of a doting mother.“Mother,” I said carefully, sitting down. “Is everything alright?”“I owe you an apology,” she said, l
