Elena

I sat on the edge of the mattress, my heart thumping against my ribs. My thumb hovered over Adrian’s name before I finally pressed call.

The line began to ring.

1... 2... 3...

My breath hitched. How could it be ringing? In my past life, my mother-in-law had sworn through her fake tears that Adrian’s phone had been incinerated in the fatal fiery crash. I had believed her without question. I hadn’t even been allowed to attend his closed-casket funeral.

And then I heard it.

The faint, muffled chime of Adrian’s custom ringtone was echoing from down the hallway—inside this very house.

I rose slowly from the bed, my pulse roaring in my ears, and crept into the dark corridor with my phone still on speaker.

I followed the muffled sound toward the private study at the far end of the wing. As I neared the cracked door, I quickly ended the call, slipped my phone onto total silence, and pressed my back against the wall in the shadowy alcove.

I tapped the screen, opening the voice recorder app to capture every single word.

Through the crack in the door, I saw all of them gathered around the mahogany desk—my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, Lucas, Vivian... and standing right in the center, perfectly healthy and holding a glass of scotch, was my supposed dead husband.

“Who the hell was calling you this late?” Vivian demanded, her arms crossed over her delicate black lace dress, as she glared at Adrian.

Adrian glanced down at his phone screen, his handsome face twisting into a disgustingly bitter sneer. “That bitch.”

Vivian gasped, her eyes flashing. “You mean your ex-wife?”

“Yes,” Adrian scoffed, tossing the phone onto the desk. “I have no idea why she’s calling my number.”

“Does she suspect something?” Vivian asked, nervously glancing toward the door.

“Never,” Adrian boasted with sickening confidence. “Elena is far too stupid to suspect a thing. The girl worships the ground I walk on.”

“Sister-in-law,” Lucas chimed in, his tone dripping with mock sympathy. Sister-in-law! The very scumbag who had held my hands and comforted me in the foyer hours ago was now smirking at his brother. “She’s probably just in shock, calling his phone, hoping it’s all a bad dream. You don’t know how gullible she is, Vivian.”

“Elena has always been a simple, naïve fool,” my father-in-law interjected, chuckling darkly. “We’ve been manipulating her for years. Look at this magnificent estate—that fool owns it, but now it’s officially registered in my son’s name.”

“Don’t stress yourself, my darling,” my mother-in-law cooed, gently rubbing Vivian’s back. “Remember, you’re carrying my precious grandchild.”

My jaw clenched so hard my teeth hurt. My entire body shook with a cold, terrifying fury. I held my breath, forcing my hands to stay steady as I recorded their words.

“I suppose so,” Vivian purred, stepping up to Adrian and resting her hand on his chest. “So what’s the rest of the plan? Now that your wife thinks you’re dead, how are we securing the money? I still don’t fully get how the loan works.”

Adrian wrapped his arm around Vivian’s waist, pulling her tight against his hip. I watched in stomach-turning horror as he buried his face in her neck, pressing a wet kiss against her collarbone.

“To her, I’m dead,” Adrian whispered against Vivian’s skin. “To you, I’m the start of our new life. We will build our empire on her sweat and tears. The multi-million-dollar loan I secured from Mr. Kane using Elena’s identity? She will be the one working three jobs to pay it back while we live like royalty.”

“Aww,” Vivian giggled softly. “And how exactly are you going to force her to pay it?”

“We’ve already set the trap,” my mother-in-law smiled, taking Vivian’s hand. “You’ll see tomorrow. When I faked my kidney failure, that idiot didn’t hesitate for a second—she sold off another property her late father left her, just to pay for my ‘treatments.’”

The sheer evil of their voices sent a violent shudder through my frame. As I instinctively backed away from the door, my slippers caught the edge of a bronze pedestal, sending a heavy ceramic flower vase crashing to the floor.

CRASH!

“Who’s there?!” Adrian’s harsh voice barked.

Panic surged through me. I kicked off my slippers, snatched them up in my hand, and sprinted silently down the hallway on tiptoes, diving into my bedroom and pulling the heavy duvet over my head just as the study door burst open.

I closed my eyes, forcing my chest to rise and fall in a slow, steady rhythm, pretending to be fast asleep.

Seconds later, my bedroom door clicked open. Quiet footsteps approached the bed.

The scent of warm vanilla and fresh tobacco filled my senses. Lucas.

My pulse roared in my ears, every nerve ending in my body screaming in terror. In my past life, this was the monster who had drugged my milk and violated me while I slept. I dared not open my eyes, holding my breath as he leaned over my sleeping form.

“Elena?” Lucas whispered softly, reaching out to stroke a stray strand of hair from my forehead. “Are you awake?”

He was testing me. If I flinched, if I showed even a second of awareness, I wouldn’t survive the night. I remained completely limp, letting my breath escape in a soft, heavy sigh.

“Come on, Lucas,” Vivian’s voice called quietly from the doorway. “It was just the stupid cat. Mother saw it run into the lounge.”

“Ah,” Lucas murmured, pulling his hand back. “Right. Elena’s cat.”

The door finally clicked shut, and the lock turned. Yet, I lay frozen in the dark for a full hour, not daring to open my eyes until I was certain I was truly alone.

ElenaI woke up feeling completely refreshed.Months had passed since that fateful day of retribution, and my new life had officially begun. I got out of bed, took a warm bath, and dressed in a sharp, tailored suit fitting for the Chairwoman I now was. As I picked up my handbag, my phone screen lit up with a notification:【Good morning! How are you feeling today?】I smiled warmly as I read Roxy’s text. Ever since everything went down, she had made sure to send me a message like this every single morning.【I’m doing wonderful, thank you. Have a great day!】 I typed back before slipping my phone into my purse.I walked down the grand marble staircase, where my new housekeeper greeted me with a polite bow.“Good morning, Chairwoman. Your breakfast is prepared.”“Thank you,” I replied, enjoying a quick, quiet meal before stepping out to my car.It was my original luxury car—the one Adrian thought he had hidden away in his friend’s garage. Kane made sure every single piece of property stole

Elena“I’m sorry! Elena, I’m so sorry!” Adrian suddenly sobbed, reaching out to grab the hem of my dress. He pointed a trembling, bloody finger at Vivian. “It was her! That bitch forced me into this! You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved!”I stared at him with complete disdain. That wasn’t what he said when he stood over my deathbed.“How dare you, Adrian?!” Vivian shrieked, snapping her head toward him. “You were the one who crawled back to me after I divorced my ex! You begged me to take you back! You told me you hated Elena and wanted her dead! You planned all of this, and now you’re blaming me?!”I stood back with my arms crossed, watching the two lovers tear each other to shreds.Idiots.“Lucas!” I called out suddenly. The entire room froze. Adrian, Eleanor, and Vivian all whipped their heads toward the front entrance in panic. After a long silence, I let out a soft laugh. “Oh. He’s not coming. I was the one who handed the evidence to the police and put him behind bars.”Eleanor

Elena“What do you mean?” Adrian stammered from the floor. “Why are you sitting next to him? Get up!”I tilted my head back and laughed. It started as a soft chuckle, then burst into full, hysterical laughter until tears welled in the corners of my eyes. I clutched my stomach, savoring every second of their complete bewilderment.“What the hell is so funny?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking. “You bitch!”My laughter died instantly. I turned a gaze colder than ice onto her. “Bitch? You’re referring to yourself, right?”“How dare you!” she screamed, taking a step back.“Mother,” I called out, my tone dripping with bitter irony. “Didn’t you tell me Vivian was just your distant cousin? How on earth did she end up as Adrian’s mistress?”“I am not a mistress!” Vivian cut in sharply, clutching Adrian’s arm. “I am his wife!”“Then what does that make me?” I asked smoothly.“The unloved one is always the mistress,” she spat back.“I suppose you’re right,” I said casually, inspecting my fin

ElenaBefore Adrian could take another step toward the door, the front entrance was kicked open with a deafening crash.Kane strolled into the foyer, flanked by a dozen burly men armed with iron bars and handguns. The shock on Adrian’s face was pure poetry.“Well, well,” Kane’s low voice echoed off the high ceilings. “Isn’t that Adrian Blackwood? I thought dead men were supposed to stay buried.”Adrian froze, his face draining of color as he instinctively shoved Vivian behind his back. “M-Mr. Kane...”From the shadows near the stairs, a surge of dark triumph rushed through me. Roxy hadn’t failed me after all—she had sent Kane directly to the house to intercept Adrian before he could flee!My phone vibrated silently in my palm. A text from Roxy appeared:【Sorry to keep you waiting! My dad had a sudden emergency, but Kane and his men should be arriving right now. Is he there?】I quickly typed back:【Yes. He just walked in. Thank you for everything—I’ll take it from here.】“Why are you h

Elena“Mother,” Vivian said nervously. “What are you talking about?”Eleanor snapped her head around, glaring at Vivian with cold, vicious hatred. It was the first time Eleanor had ever looked at her like that, and Vivian instinctively took a step back.“Don’t you dare call me mother!” Eleanor hissed. “My son is sitting in a prison cell, and you think I’m going to let you and Adrian live happily ever after?”“I am so sick of this!” Adrian shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. He ripped off his cap and ran a hand through his hair—a habit he always had when he was pushed to the edge.“I told you last time!” Adrian yelled, glaring at Eleanor. “I gave you money to pay off his mess before. I told you if he screwed up again, I wouldn’t lift a finger to help him! You dragged me back here because of that useless loser!”“That ‘loser’ is your brother!” Eleanor cried, her voice cracking. “Your younger brother!”“So what? I can’t do anything for him!” Adrian snapped. “He was caught red-hand

ElenaI sat by my bedroom window long past midnight, watching the driveway for headlights that never came. Adrian didn’t return that night.By the time exhaustion finally dragged me into a shallow, restless sleep, the sky had begun turning gray. I woke a few hours later to the smell of toasted bread and fresh tea drifting up through my door.I dressed slowly and made my way downstairs. Eleanor was waiting at the bottom of the staircase, an apron tied neatly around her waist, a warm smile plastered across her face as if the night before had never happened.“There you are, sweet girl,” she cooed, taking my hands in hers. “I made you breakfast. Come, sit.”She guided me to the table, where a full spread waited—eggs, fresh bread, fruit, a steaming cup of tea.She pulled out my chair herself, fussing over the placement of my napkin like a woman auditioning for the role of a doting mother.“Mother,” I said carefully, sitting down. “Is everything alright?”“I owe you an apology,” she said, l
