I walked inside the classroom to attend the last period and I heard the same annoying snickers and met a few shocked faces as well. Since the time I was pushed into the locker by Caleb, people were coming to my classes to just look at me. I felt like a showpiece kept on a show window for viewers to enjoy the sight of. One thing that surprisingly Arya noticed was that all these people were from the area where the Adolf family lives.
“Is there something on my face?”, I asked for the hundredth time.
“No! you need to just stay a little calm. People will forget what happened very soon.”, Anna said. I nodded and ignoring the distracting stares I focused on the laws of motion.
“Are you sure you wish to go there alone?”, Arya asked as I walked out of the school gates.
“He doesn’t live in a shady place. It is just the woods, and don’t you remember when mom and dad were alive, I used to go to their house every day.”, I replied.
I was seven when my parents passed away. I remember hugging them and saying goodbye not knowing this would be the last time I will feel my mom and dad’s warm embrace. I went on a camping trip with my brother. It was a three-day camp, but we were called back on the second day, under the reason of a family emergency. The whole ride back we both were tensed but none of our teachers told us what exactly had happened. When we finally reached home, we saw a lot of familiar faces on our lawn, but we couldn’t find the two people our eyes were yearning for.
I ran to my grandmother who started crying the moment I hugged her. That is when I realised something huge has happened. My brother was informed first, and he broke down the news of our parent’s death to me. According to the officer, they met with an accident and their car went down the cliff. The search for their bodies went on and on for a month but the bodies were never found.
My dad and Mr Daniel Adolf, Caleb’s dad were best friends. I remember we used to visit their place a lot for family dinners, and we even went on a few vacations together. Caleb came to this town when he was ten and I was eight years old. According to some Adolf family traditions, the eldest son must study in some boarding school for a few years. After my parent’s death and Caleb’s sudden return, I and my brother stopped visiting the Adolf house. That kind of explains why I am not close to Caleb, at all.
“When is Oliver coming back?”, Arya asked.
“He called yesterday! I guess he will be visiting next month.”, I replied feeling a little excited at the mention of my brother’s name.
Oliver Robinson, my elder brother, and the only person I consider as my family. After the death of our parents, he took over himself to take care of us. He was sixteen back then. After four years he moved out of the town and went to Texas to complete his studies. Everyone knows him here. My brother is a famous author, and he never forgets to mention my name in his books- Haley Robinson.
“Haley! Do bring back another invitation for us.”, Arya reminds me again as I walk in the opposite direction. I nod faking a smile which she knows very well.
“PLEASE!”, she begs to make a cute face. I give in and nod again this time with a tiny bit of sincerity. She squeals with joy and skimps happily to her car.
I feel nervous going back to the woods after so many years. I wonder if Mrs Adolf would even recognise me? If they would even let me inside their house. I walk towards the woods feeling something nostalgic hit me with every step I take.
I hold the envelope tightly as I tread on the road which is coming back in bits and pieces to me. I have a hazy memory of this place, but it is enough to make me feel things. I walk on the cemented road which soon becomes a rough, uneven path and the trees of all shapes and sizes are around me. As I walk deeper into the woods, I find myself standing in front of my favourite spot in the woods as a kid, the waterfall!
“I miss you mom!”, I whisper as I watch the water flow down and form ripples.
“What are you doing here?”, a voice startles me. Scared by the intruder I lose my balance and fall into the stream. I somehow compose myself again and sit in the stream trying to catch my breath.
“How do you manage to make such a memorable impression?”, the person asks.
I finally look up to find the stranger I banged my car’s door into, standing in front of me.
“Hey! You are Ethan, right?”, I ask ignoring his comment on my clumsiness. He nods and finally gives me his hand. I smile at him a little embarrassed and he helps me up.
“What are you doing here?”, I ask curiously.
“This is where I live.”, his reply is short and to the point.
“You live here?”, I asked pointing towards the waterfall. He laughs.
“I live in the Adolf mansion. I am Ethan Williams Adolf.”, he replies with a smirk. A typical Adolf family smirk!
“I had no idea Caleb has a younger brother.”, I said.
“Oh no! I am his cousin brother. We are both 20. I just moved here to stay with my uncle.”, he explains. I nod.
“What are you doing here?”, he asks.
“I am here to meet Caleb and return something that he gave me by mistake.”, I reply and show him the envelope. He looks at it closely and his expressions change.
“Caleb gave this to you?”, he asks in disbelief.
“Yes, he did, and I guess it is very important because your expressions changed the moment you read the invite.”, I said. He smiled at me and asked me to follow him. He took me to the Adolf mansion and the whole way we were both quiet.
I was standing in front of the mansion, and I could see it had changed a lot. More like it was a new and modern version of what I remember as the Adolf mansion.
“Don’t you wish to come inside?”, Ethan asked. I looked at him to find he was already inside the gate. I ran towards him.
“You stay here, I will call Caleb.”, he said and left me standing at the entrance.
I decided to look around while waiting for that arrogant prince. I walked around to see a beautiful armour kept at the entrance. What a magnificent place! I walked to the other side where there was a vase with an intricate design. It looked expensive. Being the clumsy one I decided to maintain my distance from all the beautiful and expensive stuff around me.
“Well, look who is here. It is our little thief Haley, isn’t it!”, a familiar sneaky voice made its way to my ears.
I turned around to meet the face I dreaded to see the moment I entered the woods. Scarlett Adolf!
Maybe, I didn’t mention it, but Adolf mansion was more than just beautiful memories. These memories were also tainted with constant bullying by Scarlett Adolf, Caleb’s cousin sister whose life’s motive is to leech off from the Adolf family and hit on her cousin brother!
Memories are the most beautiful and the scariest things we hold onto in life. I watched her walk down the stairs with the same evil smirk and tons of flashbacks started playing like a movie in front of my eyes. Her red dress and face caked with make-up, perfectly showed her dominance. Scarlett Adolf’s life was nothing but a huge lie. A lie only a few people were aware of and unfortunately, I am one of those few people.“I never thought I’ll ever get to see you again!”, her voice laced with disgust made me shiver. I could feel all the scars burn again. The scars my clothes were hiding for years!“Have you gone mute?”, she asked now standing right in front of me.“I am not here to see you!”, I said in a brave voice.“But you are standing in front of me right now. It will be great to have a little chat, wouldn’t it?”, she said faking a smile.“A chat with you? What about a no for
After an hour and a half of running from one room to another and creating complete chaos, we were finally walking out of our apartment. Anna was a little nervous about seeing Arnold there, but she agreed to come with us to give me company.Arya was jumping with excitement, and we just let her have her moment. I was the least dressed person out of the three of us. I chose to wear a simple black dress and paired it with my denim jacket and white shoes. Anna was wearing her sea-green gown with her blonde hair complementing the look perfectly. Arya was excited about wearing her new dress. She wore a red and black jumpsuit with black heels and made a high pony to complete the look. We finally sat in the car and Arya decided to be our driver. After a long drive to the other side of the city, we were finally standing outside the woods. I picked up my phone and asked Ethan to come and pick us up. The radio in our car was still on with Sia’s Cheap Thrills playing at full
The stranger was still looking at us. I caught him staring at Caleb a few times too. Everything about him yelled danger. Whenever our eyes met I had this unsettling feeling in my gut.“Are you okay?”, Ethan asked giving me another glass of this amazing juice I had been hooked onto.“Who is that?”, I asked pointing at the guy with my eyes.“The guy in the black suit and weird grey tie?”, he asked, and I noticed his tie was indeed very weird. I nodded.“Why did he do something?”, he asked.“No, he was talking to Caleb earlier and I just don’t feel comfortable around him. Maybe I am being paranoid, but he seems scary.”, I told him honestly.“I don’t think you are being paranoid. He is scary. We all feel that way.”, he answered.“But who is he? I have never seen him in town.”, I asked again.“Remember Caleb stayed at a boarding sch
Caleb was holding my wrist tightly and he pulled me inside the house. I frantically looked towards the lawn to spot my friends, but I couldn’t find them.“Where did my friends go?”, I asked myself.“I don’t know. They must be out there somewhere.”, Caleb answered without looking at me.“How could you know!”, I was again not supposed to say that out loud.“Then why did you ask me?”, he asked and kept his focus on the stair we were climbing now.“I am talking to myself.”, I replied, and he just shrugged his shoulders.Once we reached upstairs, he opened the first door and asked me to wait outside. I looked around and I remember how the third floor of the Adolf mansion was always off-limits to us. My brother was the curious one and once he tried to enter this floor. He came back with a broken arm and to date, I have no idea what exactly happened here. I peeked inside the ro
The party was in full swing, and I could see people were enjoying it to the fullest. The party was divided into two zones. On one side of the lawn, all the youngsters were dancing and drinking and then again dancing. And on the other side of the lawn, there were all these serious-looking people, having sophisticated chats with a glass of champagne in one hand and the other hand in their pant’s pocket. Caleb was the one I was pitying. The poor birthday boy was juggling between the two sides. “Hayley come on!”, Anna came and pulled me into the crowd of a bunch of drunk teenagers moving their bodies to the beats. “I told you I don’t feel like dancing!”, I screamed, so that she could hear my voice over the loud music. “I don’t care. You are dancing!”, she screamed back and then started to sway her hips and hands. I laughed and soon we were both jumping to the beats. Fifteen minutes into dancing and I look behind to see Ethan also joined us. We were all en
Life is full of confusing mazes which surprise you and test you. I had my first encounter with a maze when I met Scarlett for the first time, and I was bullied for something I had no idea about. Maybe I still don’t know. But I do remember her calling me the odd one out, the kid who didn’t deserve to be a Robinson just like my dad.The second maze occurred when I lost my parents but all those times, I had my brother protecting me, guiding me. Today I felt lost. My soul was desperate for help, but I just kept running from the people who might have helped me- my best friends. For a while, I heard them shouting my name, but I just hid behind a tree. I wanted to be alone. This morning all I did was hate, Caleb. And I was right. I need to hate him. he deserves it. But his every touch, every move made this weird sensation. It was like someone sent electric shocks down my spine- in a good way. And all these confusing emotions combined with all the secrets his famil
We were walking back to the Adolf mansion and Caleb was still holding my hand. I was tired, thirsty, sleepy, and really hungry. I held onto his hands tighter as I felt a little dizzy.“Are you okay?”, he asked turning around after I squeezed his hand a little too tightly.“Yes! I am fine.”, I answered smiling a little. He nodded and focused his gaze back on the uneven land.“How far did I even come?”, I asked astonished at my own running skills.“Well, you literally ran into the middle of the forest. Our house is in the very beginning of this place. So, you did travel a nice long way.”, he chuckled.“Woah! I didn’t even realise.”, I murmured.“I am just glad we found you while you were still breathing.”, he said without looking back. How can someone say such a mean thing? I planned on ignoring his comment, he is the one who saved my life after all.“Ca
Life is all about change. But is it really change? Or is it just uncertainties? If change is so good for us, then why our instinct is to fear change? Is change always good? Who said it is always good?“Caleb!”, one of his friends called him. Caleb looked at me with questioning eyes. More like eyes filled with uncertainty! I nodded slowly and he finally let me go. A void! That is what I felt. With no arms holding me safely in their warm embrace, I felt scared. I felt being pulled into a dark void.I watched his every move. I could feel the sweat drip down from the side of my face and pause at my chin for a second or two before falling and vanishing into oblivion. I was nervous. My eyes were focused on his face, trying to read his expressions and find the answer my selfish self was asking again and again. At this very moment, I realised, how selfish humans can be. There was a dead body found and my mind was still hoping, it shouldn’t be my friend to sav
