Caleb was holding my wrist tightly and he pulled me inside the house. I frantically looked towards the lawn to spot my friends, but I couldn’t find them.
“Where did my friends go?”, I asked myself.
“I don’t know. They must be out there somewhere.”, Caleb answered without looking at me.
“How could you know!”, I was again not supposed to say that out loud.
“Then why did you ask me?”, he asked and kept his focus on the stair we were climbing now.
“I am talking to myself.”, I replied, and he just shrugged his shoulders.
Once we reached upstairs, he opened the first door and asked me to wait outside. I looked around and I remember how the third floor of the Adolf mansion was always off-limits to us. My brother was the curious one and once he tried to enter this floor. He came back with a broken arm and to date, I have no idea what exactly happened here. I peeked inside the room feeling a little scared standing in the empty corridor. It was eerily silent. When there was no sign of Caleb for the next few seconds, I decided to enter ignoring his very clear command about staying out.
I walked inside and in front of me was the most beautiful room I had ever seen. The black theme of the room was mesmerizing, and the classy look was such a treat to the eyes. ‘Why did he not want me to enter?’, I wondered.
“I specifically asked you to not enter. Do you ever listen to me?”, Caleb’s voice made me jump.
“It was scary outside.”, I defended my action and he replied with a very rude roll of the eye. Without saying anything he came forward and wrapped a towel around me.
“Dry yourself up and then wear this sweater.”, he said keeping his white turtleneck on the bed. I nodded and started to dry my hair. While I was busy, he walked into another room that looked like his study.
After drying myself and wearing his sweater I walked into the study. He was busy reading something on his laptop, so I took my time admiring his collection of books.
“Do you actually believe in all this?”, I asked pointing to his collection of supernatural fantasies. He looked up at the section I was pointing to and then nodded.
“Why?”, it was a sudden response.
“What do you mean why?”, he said, closed his laptop and walked towards me.
“Why would you believe in something like this? Have you ever seen a vampire or a werewolf?”, I asked.
“A vampire no, but I have seen werewolves.”, he answered without even thinking. And for a second, I thought he was not lying.
“You have seen a werewolf?”, I scoffed.
“Yes, there are a lot of werewolves in this forest.”, he said with a smile.
“Those are wolves. Just wolves.”, I corrected him.
“How do you know?”, he asked taking out a book from the collection to just fiddle with.
“Well, because werewolves look half human and half wolves.”, I just said what came to my mind.
“Those are lycans or partially transitioned wolves. Werewolves are beautiful.”, he answered looking deep into my eyes. And suddenly I saw his eyes change colour. They went from brown to golden and then back to brown. He closed his eyes and moved back.
“Y-you eyes?”, I stuttered a little frightened. He was clutching his head tight and holding tightly to the table. He was in pain!
“Are you okay?”, I took a careful step towards him.
“Don’t come close.”, he said in a low voice.
“Should I call someone for help?”, I asked but he refused with a shake of the head.
“C-close the door.”, he stuttered in pain. I ran to the door and closed it without thinking.
“Stay there!”, he screamed before I could run back into the study. I had no reason to disobey him, so I stayed in the room.
After two minutes he walked out just like the Caleb I had come into this room with.
“Are you okay?”, I asked scrutinising his face. He smiled and nodded.
“What happened there? And how did your eyes change colour?”, I asked.
“You have seen enough for one day.”, he replied and unlocked the door.
“No! tell me how your eyes changed colour?”, I was adamant to get this answer.
“You are just seeing things.”, he replied taking slow yet intimidating strides towards me.
I slowly stepped back, and he kept walking looking into my eyes. I gulped and suddenly my back hit a wall making my heartbeat race. Will I get killed today because I am too curious? I wondered. He was now in my personal space, and I could feel his body’s warmth.
“Do you still wish to know?”, he whispered in a low tone. I slowly shook my head without looking at him.
“Good girl!”, he said and walked out of the room.
I stood there for a few seconds to calm myself down. What just happened here? Did I get scared of that loser! I huffed annoyed and then looked around to find myself alone in the room. Oh damn! This is the third floor! I freaked out and ran out of the room and climbed down the stairs. How can someone walk this fast and just vanish? I was running down the stairs when I bumped into someone.
“I am sorry.”, I mumbled rubbing my forehead.
“It is okay.”, a strange yet familiar voice answered. I looked up to find Caleb’s boarding school’s principal smiling at me. Way to go Hayley. Run from one creep and then bump straight into the other.
“I am really sorry.”, I apologised again and walked past him.
“Where are you going?”, he asked making me stop.
“I am going out in the lawn, to join my friends.”, I answered turning around.
“But I heard your friend Ethan was looking for you.”, he said taking a step towards me.
“Oh! I will talk to him then. Thank you for informing me.”, I said with a smile and turned around.
“He wants to meet you near the back door. That is what he said.”, the creepy man stopped me again. He was now getting on my nerves.
“Okay! Thank you!”, I answered without turning around and left. I might still be in high school, but I am not stupid. I know Ethan hates him, why would he leave a message for me with him?
I walked out of the house into the lawn and finally spotted my friends. They ran towards me and Anna hugged me tightly.
“We heard what happened. Are you okay?”, Arya asked. I nodded.
“Where were you guys?”, I asked.
“Anna wanted to click pictures with the cake and near those white lilies by the pool. We were there.”, Arya answered, and I nodded. They were on the opposite end, no wonder I was not able to spot them.
I walked with them towards the fountain and my eyes landed on Caleb’s principal again. He was staring at me with a smirk. I looked at him and he just shook his head laughing and walked away. But before he turned around, I noticed something that made me wonder, am I paranoid or did his eyes change colour too?
The party was in full swing, and I could see people were enjoying it to the fullest. The party was divided into two zones. On one side of the lawn, all the youngsters were dancing and drinking and then again dancing. And on the other side of the lawn, there were all these serious-looking people, having sophisticated chats with a glass of champagne in one hand and the other hand in their pant’s pocket. Caleb was the one I was pitying. The poor birthday boy was juggling between the two sides. “Hayley come on!”, Anna came and pulled me into the crowd of a bunch of drunk teenagers moving their bodies to the beats. “I told you I don’t feel like dancing!”, I screamed, so that she could hear my voice over the loud music. “I don’t care. You are dancing!”, she screamed back and then started to sway her hips and hands. I laughed and soon we were both jumping to the beats. Fifteen minutes into dancing and I look behind to see Ethan also joined us. We were all en
Life is full of confusing mazes which surprise you and test you. I had my first encounter with a maze when I met Scarlett for the first time, and I was bullied for something I had no idea about. Maybe I still don’t know. But I do remember her calling me the odd one out, the kid who didn’t deserve to be a Robinson just like my dad.The second maze occurred when I lost my parents but all those times, I had my brother protecting me, guiding me. Today I felt lost. My soul was desperate for help, but I just kept running from the people who might have helped me- my best friends. For a while, I heard them shouting my name, but I just hid behind a tree. I wanted to be alone. This morning all I did was hate, Caleb. And I was right. I need to hate him. he deserves it. But his every touch, every move made this weird sensation. It was like someone sent electric shocks down my spine- in a good way. And all these confusing emotions combined with all the secrets his famil
We were walking back to the Adolf mansion and Caleb was still holding my hand. I was tired, thirsty, sleepy, and really hungry. I held onto his hands tighter as I felt a little dizzy.“Are you okay?”, he asked turning around after I squeezed his hand a little too tightly.“Yes! I am fine.”, I answered smiling a little. He nodded and focused his gaze back on the uneven land.“How far did I even come?”, I asked astonished at my own running skills.“Well, you literally ran into the middle of the forest. Our house is in the very beginning of this place. So, you did travel a nice long way.”, he chuckled.“Woah! I didn’t even realise.”, I murmured.“I am just glad we found you while you were still breathing.”, he said without looking back. How can someone say such a mean thing? I planned on ignoring his comment, he is the one who saved my life after all.“Ca
Life is all about change. But is it really change? Or is it just uncertainties? If change is so good for us, then why our instinct is to fear change? Is change always good? Who said it is always good?“Caleb!”, one of his friends called him. Caleb looked at me with questioning eyes. More like eyes filled with uncertainty! I nodded slowly and he finally let me go. A void! That is what I felt. With no arms holding me safely in their warm embrace, I felt scared. I felt being pulled into a dark void.I watched his every move. I could feel the sweat drip down from the side of my face and pause at my chin for a second or two before falling and vanishing into oblivion. I was nervous. My eyes were focused on his face, trying to read his expressions and find the answer my selfish self was asking again and again. At this very moment, I realised, how selfish humans can be. There was a dead body found and my mind was still hoping, it shouldn’t be my friend to sav
I could feel my insides burn as I ran as fast as I could. The image of Caleb turning into a werewolf was flashing in front of my eyes again and again. With my hands, I pushed aside the branches hindering my way and kept running. I could feel the sweat dripping off my face and some of it collecting over the top of my lip. Involuntarily with a swift movement of my tongue, I cleared the sweat only to get the salty taste that lingered longer on my tastebuds.I stopped for a second to look behind, well maybe it was just an excuse to catch a breath. But that one extra breath did cost me a lot. Suddenly I was pulled to my right.“Where are you going?”, Caleb’s voice made a shiver run down my spine.“Leave me!”, I screamed and pulled myself out of his firm grip.“I will not!”, he said with authority holding me by my shoulder again.I looked at him with fear, but cold eyes. His hands held me tighter, and his fingers
I never expected rainbows and unicorns in my life. And I clearly never expected werewolves. After losing my parents I thought nothing could affect me anymore. No amount of hardships could make me feel helpless. But today, staring into a dark nothing, I felt like calling out for help. I was scared, not of darkness, but of being alone. “Where is she?”, a voice boomed making me flinch. I couldn’t see anything which might have made my hearing a lot more sensitive. I looked around trying to make out what was happening. “Is she inside this cage?”, I heard Caleb’s voice. I stood up and slowly moved towards the direction the voice was coming from. Maybe Caleb is back! “I am here!”, I yelled without thinking. “There she is.”, the voice said. “Sir, think about it one more time.”, another voice said. It was a familiar voice yet not recognisable. “What did you say?”, Caleb said. His voice seemed full of rage. The tone made me realise it was still
Yugen, a profound awareness of the universe. No one can attain that perfect awareness. The number of things we see and the things we hear is just one-fourth of what is happening around us. I wondered what if there is a parallel universe, which exists and runs just beside us, but both the worlds are unaware of each other’s immediate presence- no yugen. And now when there is a possibility of my mom being a werewolf, a possibility of werewolves existing, how could we even think of a world where there is yugen! “You really liked that bread, didn’t you!”, Uncle Zach chuckled eyeing the bread I was still nibbling on. I just smiled and nodded. Honestly, the bread tasted like garbage, pure garbage. Me devouring it slowly only made the matters worse, as it forced each of my tastebuds to take in that taste. But it was a good excuse to postpone this conversation, which Uncle Zach was so excited about. Finally, after delaying the talk for a half-hour, I finished
I had no idea if it was day or night outside. I was surrounded by darkness and the almost diminishing light of the lanterns. No one came inside to give us food or water and Uncle Zach never told me where he got the food from. I looked at his sleeping form, and I could find a little resemblance to mom. I wondered what he looks like when he is not in transition? It led to another thought and then other till I finally pondered, can he even change into his human form completely? I’ll ask him once he wakes up! After what felt like an hour, I finally heard the gates open. My sense of time was also missing. I had no idea how fast or slow time was passing. Just like me Uncle Zach also sat up straight. He sniffed the air. “It’s your mate. I am going inside. Don’t tell him we talked. Stay safe Haley.”, he whispered and vanished into the darkness of his cage. I gulped in fear as I heard footsteps coming toward me. What is he here for now? “Haley?”, there was a s
