CHAPTER FIVE
Charlotte’s POV
- - - - -
For a moment, I forgot I was in trouble.
The King’s arm stayed around me, steady and warm. I knew I didn’t belong there, that I should’ve stepped away, but I didn’t. When he leaned in and said, “Just stay close to me,” I did.
I couldn’t explain it, but something about the way he held me made me lose my mind. He wasn’t cold or harsh like I expected. He was calm, careful. And that scared me more than if he’d yelled.
I didn’t want to move. I didn’t want to run. In that moment, it felt like I was right where I was supposed to be, even if none of it made sense.
I looked up at him. His face was serious, unreadable, but not unkind. He didn’t smile, nor did he say anything to me, but there was something in his eyes, like he already knew me.
I looked away quickly. My head was a mess, and my heart wouldn’t slow down. I knew I’d messed up… but somehow, I didn’t regret it. Not yet.
Then, the wedding hall doors opened with a loud bang. The noise was sharp and sudden. The room fell into a hush, and every head turned toward the entrance.
A few quiet gasps broke the silence. I turned too, slowly, a knot already tightening in my stomach.
And then I saw her.
My heart dropped.
The murmurs started almost immediately. Guests leaned into each other, whispering, asking who she was and what kind of person would walk into the wedding hall dressed like that, and with the audacity of barging in The shock on their faces told me everything I needed to know.
This wasn’t just any guest. This was the real bride. And from the looks on their faces, not everyone knew what she looked like until now. The laughter died. The music cut off mid-note.
Gasps spread like wildfire as she stepped into the aisle, her heels striking the floor with purpose. Each step was sharp, angry. Her eyes locked straight on me.
“She’s an impostor!” she yelled, her voice slicing through the silence like a blade.
The crowd went silent. She marched straight to the altar and reached for my veil before I could react.
And just like that, everything fell apart. My legs started to shake, and I couldn’t think, couldn’t move. The room filled with sharp gasps, voices rising in disbelief.
The cheers turned into confusion. The whispers grew louder. Nothing made sense anymore. It was no longer a wedding. It was chaos.
My mother froze where she stood, her lips parted in disbelief. Her eyes were locked on me at the altar, and for a long moment, I felt her disappointment. She didn’t say anything, but her eyes said it all.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she stared, stunned. Her chest rose sharply as if she couldn’t catch her breath. Her knees buckled beneath her, but Mia and Hazel rushed to her side and held her up. They were just as shocked and were about to cry because they couldn't understand how I ended up here.
At the Moonstone Pack’s table, my father didn’t move from his seat. He just sat there, expressionless. For a moment, I wasn’t even sure he was going to look at me.
But then… he did.
His eyes locked on mine, and something inside me cracked open. There was no anger, no frown on his face, just a look that cut deeper than any words ever could. My knees almost buckled. I had seen my father disappointed before, but this… this was different. This was worse.
Around him, the whispers swelled. Guests leaned in, exchanging confused glances and hushed murmurs. Some stared directly at me. Others looked at the real bride who had just stepped in.
Everyone who knew I belonged to the Moonstone pack began to look at my pack members. The weight in the room grew heavier, thick with unspoken judgment.
I didn’t need to turn to know what they were thinking, the shame pressed down on me from every direction, wrapping itself around my chest like a rope tightening with each breath.
My pack members began to lower their heads one after the other, their silence more painful than words. I could feel their discomfort, their confusion… their disappointment.
At the entrance, our pack Beta stood frozen. His eyes locked on me, wide with disbelief. He didn’t need to speak, I already knew. My father must have sent him to find me, and now he has.
He didn’t say a word. And in that stillness, I realized he was just as lost as everyone else. My vision blurred as tears filled my eyes, and the sound of my heartbeat roared in my ears, drowning out everything else.
But all I could truly feel… was shame and fear.
“Enough.”
The King’s voice cut through the noise, loud and clear. It echoed across the room just as he let go of my hand. The murmurs stopped instantly.
“That will be enough,” he said again, firmer this time. Silence fell like a stone. No one moved. No one dared.
All eyes turned to him.
I glanced up slowly. His expression had shifted. Calm, but unreadable. His jaw was tight, and there was a flicker of gold in his eyes, I knew he had just mind-linked someone. Giving orders, maybe.
And then, without a word to me or anyone else, he turned and walked out of the wedding hall.
My heart sank.
A maid stepped forward, careful and quiet like she didn’t want to startle me. She placed a hand on my arm. “You need to come with me,” she said gently.
I didn’t ask where. I didn’t have the strength. My legs wobbled as I stepped forward, the sound of my shoes echoing in the silence.
I followed her out, each step heavier than the last. I guess it’s time to be judged for what I’ve done.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO- - - - -Charlotte's POVIt was getting late already and Crystal had to leave. We stood by the entrance of the palace where her carriage waited, the horses snorting impatiently as if urging her to hurry. I pulled her into a tight hug, my chest aching at the thought of her leaving. I was going to miss her so much. Having her here, even just for a day, had made me feel less alone in this cold place.“I was so happy to see you today,” I whispered, refusing to let go.“When things are sorted out, come visit me often, okay?” I said softly, still holding on to her as if that alone could keep her here a little longer.“Sure. Of course I will, trust me. If I had the chance, I would literally sleep over,” she replied as she pulled out of the hug with a smile that only made my heart ache more.“You should definitely do that,” I said, forcing a small smile of my own. “Send my greetings to your parents, okay?”Crystal nodded before stepping gracefully into her carriage. I sto
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE- - - - - Charlotte’s POVDamien rose to his full height, a small, dangerous smile playing on his lips. His shadow loomed over me, and though I tried to hold his gaze, my chest tightened with dread.I can’t. I can’t spend the night with him. Never. And yet… the thought of Crystal being banned from seeing me was just as unbearable. What’s with him and these impossible choices?“So, it’s left for you to decide,” Damien said, his tone calm but laced with authority. He lingered for a moment longer, watching me like a wolf cornering its prey. “I will take my leave now,” he added, his voice softer, almost mocking. “Once you’ve made up your mind… you know where to find me. I’ll be waiting.”The smirk tugging at his lips sent a shiver crawling down my spine. I pushed myself up from the ground, brushing my palms against my dress, but my eyes instantly caught Olivia’s stare. The hatred in her gaze was so sharp it made my stomach twist. If looks could kill, i’m saying this
CHAPTER THIRTY - - - - -Charlotte's POV I couldn’t stop staring at the figure filling the doorway. My breath caught in my throat. What’s he doing here? Heat rushed through me, not from relief, but from dread. Shit. He’s going to complicate everything now.“Damien,” Olivia breathed, her entire demeanor softening as she hurried toward him. She slipped her hands around his arm, her voice dripping with false sweetness.Crystal and I quickly lowered our heads, bowing to show respect. My heart pounded against my ribs, each beat louder than the last.“Damien,” Olivia began, her voice trembling as though she were the victim. “Charlotte and this outsider have been speaking to me so rudely, nonstop.” She sniffed, blinking rapidly as if she were on the verge of tears.I clenched my fists at my sides. She’s insane. The way she can lie so easily, switching from venom to innocence, it’s frightening.“I was only feeling bored in my chambers,” she went on, her tone soft and pitiful. “So I deci
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE- - - - -Charlotte's POVI froze, stunned by the force with which the door slammed open.Olivia swept into the room with that practiced air of entitlement she carried everywhere. “Well, hello,” she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness.“I hear there’s a little party going on without me. That doesn’t sound very fair, does it? So…” She dragged a chair across the floor and sat down uninvited, crossing her legs with a smirk. “I thought I’d join.”A sigh escaped me before I could stop it. Of course. What else could she possibly want now? With Olivia, her presence never meant peace, only trouble.“When someone isn’t invited to a party,” Crystal shot back, her tone edged with sarcasm, “doesn’t that usually mean the hosts don’t want them there?”She didn’t stop there. “And really, you could have just knocked. No need for such a dramatic entrance.” Crystal folded her arms as she sat, meeting Olivia’s gaze without flinching.I quickly glanced at her and shook my he
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT - - - - - Charlotte’s POV I led Crystal into my room in the palace, needing a quiet place where we could talk. We settled on the edge of my bed, the silence stretching between us for a moment. Her eyes searched my face, bright with the joy of seeing me again, yet shadowed with a sadness she couldn’t hide as she took in the place I now called home.“How’s Luna Abigail's health now?” I asked carefully. Because Crystal had returned sooner than I expected, and I could only hope it meant good news.“She’s much better,” Crystal said with relief in her voice. “Turns out the people looking after her here were giving her the wrong medication. Once we took her over there, she was placed on the right treatment, and now she is improving quickly.”“I’m glad to hear that,” I said, the tension in my chest loosening a little. My hand brushed against the fabric of her dress as if to steady myself. “And Henry and Cate? How are they?”Crystal’s face softened. “They’re fine, al
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN - - - - -Charlotte’s POVWithout thinking, I ran toward the girl who stood there staring at me, her eyes shimmering with the same disbelief I felt. Her arms were spread wide, like a mother beckoning her child home. The sight broke something inside me. I didn’t even realize I was crying until the tears slid hot and fast down my cheeks. She was sitting on the couch, waiting. The moment I reached her, I bent down and wrapped my arms around her tightly, holding on as though she might disappear if I let go. The tears came uncontrollably, pouring out of me in heavy sobs. I had missed her so much, more than words could ever explain. If she had been here, none of this would have happened. She hugged me back just as fiercely, her own tears falling as she rubbed my back in slow, soothing circles. It was as if she already knew what I had gone through without me needing to say a word.“I’ve missed you so much… urghhh,” I choked out between sobs, my voice breaking as I snif
