Chapter 1 A Dream Gathering Dust

Author: Veggie Sprout
The author of that anonymous comment was none other than my former adoptive younger sister, Cecilia Tierney.

My first instinct was to shut my phone off, but my eyes remained fixed on the replies beneath her comment.

Most people were condemning her for her cruelty. However, there were also those who defended her, arguing that she was simply fighting for a better life.

"Harsh words, but there's some truth to them. The ones who aren't loved don't belong. What's wrong with fighting for what you want?"

"That's just how the real world works. If the biological daughter is stupid enough to let someone replace her, whose fault is that? The adopted daughter knows how to use her advantages. That's the law of survival."

"Honestly, it takes two to tango. If the biological daughter wasn't the problem, how could she have been replaced so easily?"

Those comments dragged me straight back to the suffocating home I'd once lived in.

"Eliana, what are you daydreaming about? You're up soon!"

The bar manager's voice came from behind me, clearly impatient.

I snapped out of my thoughts and drew a deep breath, trying to suppress the bitterness and dull ache churning inside my chest.

The cramped, dimly lit backstage area reeked of a mixture of cigarette smoke, alcohol, and cheap perfume. In the mirror, I saw a face so exhausted that even heavy makeup couldn't hide it. I was a far cry from the girl I'd once been, the one who'd worn a spotless school uniform and carried a guitar in her arms.

This was what my life had become, seven years after leaving that house.

The customers were particularly difficult that night. Before I'd even finished my set, a drunken man started throwing bills onto the stage, spewing vulgarities as he did. I forced myself to finish the last song, then fled backstage as if escaping a battlefield. By the time I got there, I felt utterly drained, as though I'd just fought a brutal war.

…

By the time my shift ended, it was already late at night. The cool breeze brushed against my face, clearing my head a little.

I stood at the street corner, yet I had no idea where to go. The place I'd once called home was somewhere I could never return to, and the tiny rented room where I currently lived was nothing more than a temporary shelter.

My phone vibrated. It was a message from my landlord reminding me that next week's rent was due. Without thinking, I tightened my grip on the meager pay I'd earned from performing.

Cecilia was right: my life really had turned out terribly. Even scraping together enough to meet my most basic needs was a struggle.

When I returned to my rented room, which was barely 100 square feet, I collapsed onto the bed. My gaze accidentally fell on the dusty guitar case in the corner, and something struck my heart with painful force.

It was the gift my father had given me for my 15th birthday. He'd once ruffled my hair and said proudly, "Our little Ellie is going to be a great singer someday!"

I'd loved music for as long as I could remember. My dream had been to get into the best music conservatory in the country and sing on a magnificent stage beneath dazzling lights. I had never imagined I'd end up trapped in a smoke-filled bar, singing just to make ends meet.

As if possessed, I walked over and opened the dusty guitar case. The guitar lay quietly inside, its strings already covered in rust. It was just like my dream, gathering dust for so long that it could no longer produce a clear, beautiful sound.

I shook my head, my voice calm but firm. "I'm sorry, but I can't forgive you. Your distrust and heartlessness back then hurt me far too deeply. I once desperately wanted your love and trust, but you disappointed me time and time again. I don't need them anymore.""Ellie…" Victoria tried to say something, but I cut her off. "I know you regret what happened, but what good does regret do now? The damage has already been done, and there's no way to make up for it."I looked at them both. "My life may be modest now, but I'm free, and I have peace. I don't want the grievances of the past disrupting my life anymore, and I certainly don't want to return to the home that broke my heart."With that, I turned and walked out of the ballroom.…It wasn't until I stepped outside and felt the evening breeze against my face that I realized tears had already streamed down my cheeks.Later, I came across news about Cecilia online. After being cast out of the Kessler family, she had no marketable

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 7 The Scars They Left Behind

"Their parents are blind! They neglected their own daughter and treated an ungrateful wretch like a precious treasure. They got exactly what they deserved!""I feel so sorry for Eliana Kessler. She was deliberately framed, suffered so much, and was even kicked out by her own biological parents. She's been through so much!"The guests at the gala began discussing the revelations among themselves, their gazes toward Cecilia filled with contempt and disgust.Staring at the contents on the giant screen and hearing the whispers surrounding her, Cecilia finally broke down completely. She collapsed onto the floor and wailed, "No! That's not true! Eliana was jealous of me! She deliberately fabricated all of this!""Enough!" Donald roared in anger, his face dark with fury as he glared at Cecilia. "Even now, you're still lying! We must have been blind to adopt you and treat you like our own daughter, only for you to repay us like this and hurt Ellie in the process!"Victoria looked at Cec

"I know you're short on money, so I specifically asked the organizers to invite you. I wanted you to see just how miserable your life is now, and how well I'm doing in comparison."Her words pierced my heart like a needle. I suppressed my anger and replied coldly, "I'm not interested in anything the Kesslers own.""Is that so?" Cecilia repeated, as though she'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. Deliberately raising her voice, she made sure the people around us could hear every word. "You certainly didn't act that way back then. You used the fact that you were their biological daughter to monopolize Mom and Dad's affection, all for their money, no? So, why are you pretending to be above it all now? I've heard you've been singing in bars for the past few years, and that you have to drink with customers to earn tips. Is that true?"The guests around us immediately began whispering among themselves. Their strange, judgmental gazes raked over me like knives, making me deeply u

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 5 The Kessler Fortune Is Mine

I stared at the familiar yet strangely unfamiliar man and woman standing before me, my heart feeling as though an invisible hand had clenched around it.They were my father, Donald Kessler, and my mother, Victoria Laurent.Seven years had passed. I'd thought I'd long since erased them from my memories. Yet now that we were face-to-face again, all the hurt I'd deliberately buried came rushing back, beyond my control.Victoria was the first to break the silence, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Ellie…"She took a step toward me, reaching out as though she wanted to touch me, but I instinctively recoiled. Her hand froze in midair, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. "It's really you, Ellie. You've grown so much. Have you been doing all right these past few years?"I curled my lips into a mocking smile. "Can't you tell?"My gaze swept over their expensive clothes before dropping to my own performance outfit, still covered in stage dust. "You've been living in luxury, whi

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 4 The Night They Branded Me a Disgrace

"Enough!" Mom interrupted me, her eyes filled with a depth of disappointment and anguish I'd never seen before. "Cece has already told us everything! She said you've been in contact with Silas lately, and that she's even tried to talk you out of it! How could you have so little self-respect? The SATs are just around the corner!"I stared at Cecilia in disbelief. She was hiding behind Mom, tears streaming down her face, looking as though my self-destruction had left her heartbroken and terrified. "Ellie… I know you're under a lot of pressure, but you can't do this to yourself…"As I looked at the undisguised disgust in my parents' eyes and Cecilia's tear-streaked face, I felt as though I'd fallen into an icy abyss. No matter what I said, I couldn't defend myself. For the first time, I understood with absolute clarity that I'd long since become an unwanted outsider in this family. My dreams, my innocence, my entire life—Cecilia could take them all away with a few casual words, then

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 3 The Night Everything Changed

That afternoon, Cecilia came by as usual to bring me some water, but she looked unusually flustered. "Ellie, I think I just saw Silas hanging around outside the practice rooms. There was something really unsettling about the way he was looking around."My heart skipped a beat. Silas had kept his distance for a while after Cecilia talked him into leaving me alone last time. I hadn't expected him to show up again.Cecilia took my hand, her voice soothing. "Don't be scared, Ellie. I'll take you out through the back door so we can avoid him. The finals are what matter right now. There's no need to invite trouble when you're so close to the finish line."I looked at her gratefully. For a moment, I even wondered if I'd been wrong to suspect her before. After gathering my sheet music, I followed her quietly out through the back entrance of the practice building. It was indeed secluded, and hardly anyone ever used that path."Go home and get some proper rest, Ellie. You need to be in top
