Chapter 121

Duaine's POV

I opened the large doors to the grand hall of the Alpha pack where the meeting was holding later than I was supposed to. The huge oak doors slammed shut behind me. My boots echoed across the marble floor, and every face turned toward me, all looking expectant, sharp, and even critical in some instances.

I am sorry, I said to them. My voice rang out despite the tension in the air. "There were some pack matters required my presence. I did not intend to disrespect the council by being late."

The head of the Alpha pack, an older wolf narrowed his piercing gray eyes at me.

“You’re here now, Duiane,” he said in a calm voice. “That will suffice. Please take a seat.”

I nodded and joined the others sitting down, folding my arms over my chest. The large doors creaked open once more, and when I looked back, my body stiffened at once.

Walking in, with the confidence that always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, was Shane, Lessie's father. He walked proud

Chapter 125Lessie's POVI woke up from the warmth that wasn't the blanket that was covering me. I had thought it was a dream, my brain was still fuzzy from the disappointment of the evening before. But opening my eyes and adjusting to the gray morning light coming through the curtains, I knew what had happened.Alpha Duaine was stretched out next to me.My heart raced. His arms were clasped around me tightly enough, nearly restraining me in fear of losing me if he let go in his hold. He was weary, even sleeping. But there was something else in addition to that too, something fragile.I wished for a moment to feel that he relied on me so urgently.Gently, I tried to roll over. I did not wish to wake him, I just wanted to roll quietly away. Perhaps fetch my glass of water, perhaps clear my head before I dived into the typhoon of feeling that burst forth when this close again to him.But the instant I moved, his arms clamped down more tightly and his eyes snapped open."Where are you

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 124

Chapter 124Lessie's POVThe house was too still, the kind of still that felt like it pressed down on me, weighed over me, heavy. I was huddled in the sitting room.It was already nighttime and Alpha Duiane still had not come home.I went on calling him again and again but he was not picking up. With every call, that uneasy stench in the pit of my stomach was increasing.Something was off. Alpha Duiane was a planner, the type of person who always tied up loose ends. If he was running late, he'd call Dave, and Dave would let me know. But not tonight. No phone calls. And he was not answering. What if something had happened to him? I thought.I looked at Dave who had walked in, he had his arms folded across his chest, his expression steadfast as usual. I swallowed and finally gathered the nerve to say something."Dave, what if he had been hurt?" My voice shook, and the fear I had fought so hard to keep hidden surfaced.Dave looked at me, as if he was holding his breath for the question.

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 123

Chapter 123Duaine’s POVI stood where Dylan had left me, his last words still lingering in the air like smoke that refused to clear. When I’m done with what I’m cooking, Lessie will come running to me herself. The haughtiness of the boy was pleasing to me, yet I also resented it. He was a child playing at a game far too big for his hands. It was not my time to waste going on conversing with him. I did not wish to be talking to a puppy that is acting like a wolf. The real thing loomed a few feet in my direction, imposing and towering, weighed down with the remnants of years and guilt, Shane. Her father. The man who had pushed her into a life of obligation she never desired, and the man who had just had the temerity to ask back for her like something owing to him and not even have the decency to listen to his own daughter.I clenched my teeth together and strode towards where he was standing. I didn't care who else remained in the room of the Alpha pack. Let them see. Let them hear. Th

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 122

Chapter 122Dylan's POVThe tension in the Alpha Pack great hall remained palpable even after the meeting had ended. Some of the council members were leaving already, their voices hushed and cautious as if fearful that the very walls of stone would eavesdrop. I, however, stayed behind. My senses were heightened, my instincts grasping at me as though some concealed reality hung on the verge of discovery.I took a deep breath and let my wolf rise to the surface for an instant. The smells blended together, I perceived the far-away smells of cedarwood, leather, sweat, and dominance from having dozens of alphas and council members around. But beneath them all, there it was.I perceived something I had caught whiff of before. That smell.I looked at him, my nostrils flaring as understanding seeped deep into me like a knife. The scent was the same one I'd caught, in Shane's pack, on the same day I had come to his pack. I recalled it well, the acrid mix of pine and smoldering coals, carried

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 120

Chapter 120Author's POVShane became irritable. The letters that he'd written to his daughter were all left unanswered. Weeks had passed and there was no reply from her yet. At first, he'd thought that she was just not writing due to pride, or even fear, perhaps, but now the silence was torturous. He had no idea if she'd even gotten them. Perhaps someone was hiding them from her. This time he would not send Lessie a letter. He would approach the source of his annoyance, to the man encroaching on his life and his child.Duaine.His chest tightened as he thought of Lessie, the daughter he had raised, the daughter he had guarded, the daughter he ached to have close by.He began writing.Dear Duaine," the letter said, his handwriting crude and bold. "I have sent a number of messages to my daughter and received no response. This silence will no longer be tolerated. I'm taking this matter directly into your hands because I believe you to be its cause."He paused, catching his breath thr
