Chapter 1

Author: Sweet Beet
The large TV screen was showing a news report of Amanda Dawson buying an exorbitantly priced diamond watch as a birthday gift for Leroy Blanchard.

At first, I thought that she would be staying with him tonight and wouldn't come back home. However, I received a phone call from her later.

In a commanding tone, she said, "Leroy wants to eat the cheesecake bites you made the last time. Make some and deliver them immediately to Skybar Lounge now."

I hadn't even said anything when Leroy's voice floated in clearly from the other end of the line.

"I was just kidding, Mandy. I didn't think you'd really call Caleb about it. Do you think he'll get upset over it?"

Someone next to them said, "Don't worry about it, Leroy. Everyone in Carrington knows that Caleb Valencia is Amanda's most loyal lapdog of all time. She can't even get rid of him if she wanted to! Don't you know that he hangs on to every word she says like it's his bible?

"I bet you that he would even happily deliver boxes of condoms for her without a single complaint."

Despite everyone else laughing at me and mocking me for it, I just replied quietly, "Okay. I'll send them over in a minute."

I would finally be able to leave Amanda in three days anyway and return to my own world, after all.

Actually, I had contracted a deadly terminal disease in my real life, which I had been suffering from all my life. At the brink of my death, a system suddenly appeared in my head.

It introduced itself to me and explained that there was a book universe in which the male side character had accidentally awakened his 4th-wall self-awareness. He was no longer willing to play the part of being a pitiful and lovesick second lead, causing the plot to stall.

And so, if I were willing to transmigrate into the universe and take his place so that the plot could continue, I would be rewarded with a healthy body in the real world.

Now, my mission was about to be accomplished.

I walked into the kitchen and began preparing the ingredients needed for the cheesecake bites. The housekeeper, Erica Mueller, hurried in after me.

"Mr. Valencia! Let me handle it instead. I can't possibly let you tire yourself out like this."

A short while later, Erica and I made a fresh batch of cheesecake bites and packed them up neatly in a box. I grabbed the box and drove over to Skybar Lounge as instructed.

Leroy's birthday party was a very grand affair, and everyone from the most elite circles had been invited.

Amanda wore a stunning custom-made gown as she wrapped her hands around Leroy's arm, chatting amicably with the guests. She frowned at me as soon as she caught sight of me.

"Did you purposely dress like this to embarrass me, Caleb?"

Of course, she would always have a reason to get mad at me because I wasn't the one she loved.

The last time I went looking for her at her office, I happened to be wearing the same brand of suits as Leroy was, and I was immediately yelled at for being a copycat.

Now, I had only put on a casual shirt and some jeans because I thought I was just dropping something off for her, and she accused me of trying to embarrass her.

I just raised my hand and handed the box of cheesecake bites to her.

"The cheesecake bites you wanted, Amanda."

I used to call her "Mandy" back then too, but the moment Leroy heard it, he immediately put on a hurt, aggrieved face and said, "But Mandy, I thought that I was the only special one who got to call you like that…"

Amanda forbade me from ever calling her "Mandy" again after that.

Leroy grinned widely as he took the box from me.

"You know, the cheesecake bites you delivered to the office the last time tasted really nice. I ate four pieces just by myself."

I had only packed four pieces for Amanda the last time.

Many people could tell that Leroy was deliberately and openly provoking me, so they quickly looked at me to see how I would react.

"I'd like to apologize for my behavior last time, son," James said."Sorry, but I'm a naturally petty person who holds on to grudges for a lifetime."I turned, wanting to leave, but James hurriedly reached up and grabbed me by my arm, trying to stop me."Caleb, my hand has been acting up again lately. Can you please help me treat it once more?"My gaze fell on his right hand, which he hadn't moved since he saw me. In the past three months without my acupuncture treatment, I figured that his hand had probably returned to its former state. He couldn't even lift it now.I pretended to be shocked and said, "But Mr. Dawson, didn't you tell me that you found a 'miracle doctor' to heal you? Why didn't you let him heal you after all?"James gritted his teeth and said, "It was all that bastard Leroy's fault! He just got a random half-baked quack to fool me."I felt a surge of satisfaction rising in my chest. However, I feigned regret and said, "That's a pity. Your hand would have compl

I reluctantly nodded and agreed to compromise as the system said. So, I bade goodbye to Mom and Dad, and the system began transmigrating me back into the book universe once more.I was transported back to the home that Amanda and I used to share. The entire house was dark and smelled strongly of alcohol. I walked into the bedroom and saw her lying on what used to be our bed, curling up her tiny body into a tight ball, looking the picture of misery.I went over to draw the curtains and let in some fresh air. Sunlight suddenly streamed into the room, and Amanda frowned in discomfort before shielding her eyes with her hand."Who's there?"I replied softly, "I'm divorcing you, Amanda Dawson."She opened her eyes abruptly and stared at me as soon as she heard my voice. She blinked a couple of times, making sure that I wasn't just a figment of her imagination that would disappear, then rushed up to me to give me a bear hug."Caleb! Where on earth have you been? I've finally found you!

Amanda said sternly, "Guards, throw Leroy and Erica into the enclosure and lock them up with two more even fiercer tigers."Leroy's face went deathly pale. He crawled over to Amanda and hugged her legs, begging, "Mandy, please, I only did it because I loved you too much! But you said that you couldn't marry me because Caleb kept refusing to sign the divorce papers."I only did this because I wanted to be with you."Amanda wobbled on her feet. She'd only said that to him as a front to appease him because she never actually thought of divorcing me in the first place. She just hadn't realized her feelings for me back then. But now, after going through this incident, she finally realized that she was already deeply and irrevocably in love with me after all.She tightly gripped the wedding ring I'd tossed to the ground, thinking that she would properly explain everything to me once she'd managed to find me. She needed to tell me that the person she'd always loved was me.However, she

Amanda froze and stared at Paul. "What are you talking about? When have I said to stop feeding the tigers?"Paul shrugged and said, "You sent someone to tell us that Mr. Valencia was being very disobedient and needed a few corners taken off, so we didn't have to feed the tigers afterward."Amanda looked at the two tranquilized tigers again and nearly collapsed to the floor. Still, she lowered her voice and said, "Gut these two beasts at once."She only relaxed a little after realizing that there were no human remains in the tigers' stomachs. Still, she continued to tell her bodyguards to keep looking for me while trying to find out who had given the order not to feed the tigers in her name. The evidence all pointed to Leroy.Amanda immediately got her bodyguards to drag him from the hospital all the way to the animal enclosure, forcing him down on his knees just like what she did to me just days ago. She questioned him coldly, "Were you the one who ordered the rangers to stop fe

The pain I expected didn't happen after all. When I opened my eyes again, I realized that I had transmigrated back into my original world, and an all-familiar robotic voice appeared in my head."What the hell? This female lead is out of her mind! How could she be so cruel? What a relief that I made it to you in time!"So, how do you feel, Caleb? Was it exhilarating enough for you?"I was ready to launch a tirade of angry curses at the system. "In your dreams! I'm done playing games like this. Go find someone else to do it instead!"I suddenly caught sight of Mom and Dad standing not too far away from me and quickly rushed up to them, hugging them tightly."Mom! Dad! I missed you so much!"Mom looked at me with swollen, reddened eyes. "Who are you?""Mom? It's me, Timmy…"However, my words died in my throat when I realized what was happening before me.I wasn't at home. Rather, I was at the funeral parlor, with a casket in the center of the place and my black-and-white photo c

"Why are you lying, Erica? We didn't use any peanut butter for the cheesecake!" I retorted.Erica just looked at me innocently with confusion written on her face. "It's not on the traditional ingredient list, but you said that Ms. Dawson liked hers with peanut butter. You even purposely made me put a good dollop of it in the batter, Mr. Valencia. What are you talking about?"Amanda immediately stomped on my already hurting calf and screamed, "You absolute bastard! What else do you have to say for yourself?"I let out a cry of pain and choked out brokenly, "We've been married for years, Amanda Dawson. Do you really not know what kind of person I really am?"It's obvious that whatever happened today was an entire ploy to set me up! You can go ahead and investigate it further if you believe me. But if you don't, then just go ahead and assume that I was the one who did it."The only thing that broke me was the fact that Erica, whom I'd treated very well and even thought of as family o
