RIVER

The feeling in my stomach made me toss and turn all morning. It had been such a while since I had had a period this bad. Was it something I ate or drank, or maybe because of the change in environment? But the more time passed, the more my lower stomach churned with pain. I wanted to stand up, get some water, and get some Advil to at least feel better.

I wondered why I knew it was coming, yet I made no plans to make sure I felt better. My hot water bottle was still stuck somewhere on the wardrobe, and my pills were in my emergency kit. I beat myself up as I realise that things would have been very different with a female roommate.

The joints in my legs feel like a ninety-year-old wheel that has not been used in decades. I bite my lip to silence the cry for help. Even if I did cry, was Taylor supposed to help me? Did a boy like him even care what kind of pain I would be going through or talk more of helping?

"Sweetheart?" The knock on the door, accompanied by Taylor's voice, star

River finally broke—her body gave up, her secret slipped out, and Taylor heard the one thing she swore she’d never say: period cramps. And instead of laughing, he caught her, covered her with a blanket, and said, “Wait here.” But River thinks he’s run off because he’s “creeped out”. Readers, you and I both know Taylor’s not done. So tell me—what do you think he’s doing right now? Is he gone for good, or is he on a mission to prove he’s not the jerk she thinks he is? Comment below, or else I’ll let River stew in self-doubt while Taylor stays missing

  • My Roommate is a Boy   THE WHITE ENTRANCE

NIRELLENIGHT OF THE EVENTI have Mara help me with the makeup and hair, and as usual, she does a fantastic job. I stare at myself in the mirror as many times as I can. Why did I look so unrecognisable? I know I should have just listened to Lucien's words and not bothered about it, but I could not. I had to see what this Olivia James looked like, and if I wanted to beat her, I had to look better than her. With her images and others that Mara had pulled up from the internet, we brainstormed what I should look like, and she nailed it completely. She helps me fit into one of the dresses that presses into my stomach but makes me look 'hot', at least according to Mara and Lucien."I can't breathe," I said with a wince."Trust me, you are going to get used to it," Mara said. She had found her way to get very comfortable around them, and I did not mind it at all."Get used to not breathing?" "I do not want to," I say, and she laughs."You look breathtaking in this." There is no way that woma

  • My Roommate is a Boy    WE ARE JUST ROOMMATES

TAYLORI lean into the door; it had been three hours since I gave River a bowl of porridge and some tablets to relieve the pain. I wonder if she felt better or if she had passed out. I press my ear more into the hardwood door and try to listen for any sound of her breathing, but I do not hear anything."She is probably sleeping," Talia had said when I called her just ten minutes ago. When I saw River collapsing to the ground because of period pain, I knew that the only person who could tell me what to do was Talia. I would have to explain the situation to her, but at least she was not going to look at me as if I were weird. She was shocked that I managed to keep the fact that I had a female roommate away from her. However, she was too helpful to make sure that I got everything I had to get. Even when I was trying to go overboard, she was the one who somehow kept me grounded.I open the door as slowly and quietly as I can and stand in the middle of the room. The door is left open, so I

  • My Roommate is a Boy    THREE BAGS OF CARE

RIVERWhen the main door opens again, I am already drifting into sleep, not because it is comfortable but because I am exhausted and have decided that sleep is the only way I can survive through the pain. If I were alone, would I be expecting any help? Would I not pull myself together and try to survive? I can suffer later as long as I am alive, I declare internally and clutch my stomach as I roll into a ball on the bed, my forehead almost touching my knees."River?" Taylor knocks but does not wait before he pushes the door open and stands in my room. I raise my head just enough to see him. He was holding three white plastic bags filled to the brim. "I called my sister to ask her what I could do for someone who was having cramps, and she told me what to do," he added, rushing to the bedside. He dropped the bags to the floor beside the bed and began unloading."I did not know which one to get, so I..." He trailed off, dropping the pads and tampon packs to the bed."I have that already,

  • My Roommate is a Boy   CALLS AND CONFESSIONS

RIVER"I was just saying that... hmm... that if you..." I had never seen Taylor stutter like this before. He was always smirking with a teasing expression, and it almost felt as though I had broken him. I had never had to say that something an adult made for me was horrible, especially food, so I did not know how to return the cookies to him without making it awkward. I held onto it and tried to act as if his earlier words did not ignite something in me while I tried to brush it off and play cool."It's okay; I guess you were just speaking." I have no idea what the meaning of those words was, but I said them anyway, and he nodded in agreement. I take a step forward, still holding on to the plate, as I wonder how I am going to be able to eat it. "Good night," I say evasively because I have no idea how I am supposed to carry on the conversation. I was at my door when he cleared his throat and stopped me."River?""Yeah," I whip my hair at him, following as I turn my head."I was just won

  • My Roommate is a Boy   COOKIES AND CAR KEYS

TAYLORI pack the car up front and walk over to the next street with a paper box that my mom had packed a bunch of cookies in. I divided them into two. I stand by Javier and Matt's door, knocking and trying to act normal as if I were not intentionally offering them a box of failed cookies. The door opens, and Matt stands there; he looks genuinely shocked to see me, and even I am shocking myself by being there. "Taylor? "Can I help you?" he said, not bothering to hide his shock."Oh well, not really," I say, lifting the box higher for him to see. "I came from my mom's place, and she made a tonne of cookies, and I was thinking that we are neighbours, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring you some," I say, and he looks down at the box and then up at me."All of this?" He asked with wide eyes as he pointed to the box that was already weighing a lot on my hands."Yes, all of this," I say with a nod, hoping that was not going to be a giveaway. He did not seem to catch on as he stretched hi
