Chapter 4

Author: Mohini
The moment Nathan spoke, the room erupted into chaos. Everyone started tearing the place apart, looking for his missing watch.

As they searched, he kept up a steady, loud mutter. "Lilian gave me that for my birthday. It's worth over three million. I can't lose it!"

I didn't know what game he was playing, but I wanted out. I was almost at the door when Nathan stepped in front of me.

"Sonny," he said, his voice slick with false concern. "Why don't you just let me check your bag? It would clear the air. Otherwise, this looks... suspicious."

I knew I had nothing to hide. "I'm not playing your game, Nathan. Look for it yourself."

But when I tried to push past him, he grabbed my bag. We struggled, and everything inside spilled onto the floor.

And there, gleaming among my keys and wallet, was his watch.

The air left my lungs in a rush. I looked up and met his eyes—they were mocking, triumphant. This was a setup.

"You planted this," I said, my voice low and tight.

When I turned, I was met with a wall of cold, contemptuous stares.

Lilian stood among them, her brow furrowed, her eyes filled with pure disgust.

"I didn't take it!" The words tore from me, desperate and broken.

But they sounded weak against the damning evidence.

Nathan bent down and picked up the watch, his face a mask of wounded betrayal. "This watch means everything to me. How could you, Sonny? I really believed you'd changed after prison... but I guess old habits die hard." He shook his head sadly. "I don't think I can work with a thief."

His words were a perfectly aimed knife.

The lead client snapped. "Ms. Parson! We are done here!"

He and his team stormed out in a wave of disgust.

I moved to go after them, to explain, but a stinging slap cracked across my face.

I froze.

Lilian stared at me, her face like stone, her voice colder than I had ever heard it. "I brought you here as a favor. I can't believe you would embarrass me like this. You're nothing but a common thief."

Her words hurt more than the slap.

She, of all people, knew who I was. Why I went to prison. Who I did it for.

But the fury in her eyes left no room for the truth.

A bitter smile touched my lips. I held out my phone to her. "Then call the police."

She stared at the phone, her frown deepening, but she didn't take it.

We stood there, locked in a suffocating silence. And in that silence, I finally saw her—truly saw the stranger she had become.

Finally, she let out a sharp, derisive laugh. "Unbelievable."

She turned, slipped the watch back onto Nathan's wrist, and led him away, her voice soft and soothing.

When the door closed, I was alone. Surrounded by the wreckage.

I crouched, gathered my scattered things, and walked out without a backward glance.

That night, the airport terminal was quiet and empty. I sat alone, drafting my resignation letter. But her message arrived first: [Don't come back to the company. Stay home and think about what you've done.]

I let out a hollow laugh.

Without a second thought, I took a picture of the signed divorce papers and sent it to her.

Then I typed: [I wish you and Nathan all the happiness you deserve. But before the wedding, you might want to finalize our divorce. Unless you'd like me to report you for bigamy.]

The message had just been delivered when my screen lit up. Lilian was calling. Again and again and again.

Go back to how we used to be?She made it sound so simple, as if the past years were a minor detour. But I was no longer the man who would burn his future for a flicker of love. And she was no longer the woman I thought I knew.I had seen the way she looked at Nathan—the softness in her eyes, the unthinking favoritism. Every glance, every private smile, had been a chisel, slowly carving away my place in her life until nothing was left.A dry, mirthless smile touched my lips. "It's too late for that. I am happy without you."I turned to leave, but she threw her arms around me from behind, holding on with a desperate, crushing strength."I was wrong!" she sobbed, her voice breaking. "Sonny, I was a fool—I lost my mind!"I tried to pry her arms loose. "Let me go!"In the next moment, Sierra was there, firmly pulling Lilian away from me."He told you to let go," Sierra said, her voice cold and clear. "Do you need a translation?"The moment Lilian saw her, her face twisted with rag

The first post came directly from Nathan's account. Within hours, it had dragged both me and Sierra's company into the eye of a public hurricane.Emboldened by the chaos, Nathan showed up at my apartment, smugness rolling off him in waves."Sonny," he jeered, "do you honestly think any reputable partner will sign with a convicted felon?"I let out a low, humorless laugh."You know I went to prison, Nathan. But you have no idea why, do you?"Confusion flickered across his face. He was in the dark.A cold satisfaction settled in my chest. "I never wanted to play this card, but you left me no choice."I pulled a folder from my desk and tossed it on the table between us—the signed confession where I took the fall for Lilian. As Nathan's eyes scanned the document, the color drained from his face. He understood instantly: if this went public, Lilian's empire would crumble, and he would be buried in the rubble. There was no scenario where he won."This... this is a lie..." he stammer

Lilian waited for a response, but I offered none. The silence stretched, and when it finally settled, I realized she was gone.My head pounded from the hangover, but I forced myself to call my new colleagues to apologize for my late start.Sierra was the one who picked up. "Let me guess. Lilian." Her tone was blunt, unsurprised. "Next time she corners you, let me handle it."I let out a weary chuckle. "Don't bother. She's stubborn as hell and won't quit until she's run into a brick wall. I'll deal with her myself. No need for you to get involved."I meant it as a casual remark, but Sierra's voice turned firm. "I'm not afraid of her."Rubbing my temples, I mumbled a non-committal response and ended the call.On my first official day, Sierra insisted on a welcome lunch and pressed a thick envelope into my hand. When I tried to refuse, she cut me off. "You moved in a hurry. This is for setup costs. Take it."The gesture was kind, but it stung—a stark contrast to the single, insul

When I looked up, I froze. Lilian was standing there. Before I could say a word, she handed her card to the cashier. "Put it on this," she instructed, her tone leaving no room for argument.Once the payment was processed, she turned to me, her eyes scanning my face with a familiar, disapproving frown."You know you can't hold your liquor. What were you thinking, going out drinking like this? Who's going to look after you if you make yourself sick?"As she spoke, she reached out a hand as if to touch my arm.I instinctively recoiled, putting several feet between us in one swift motion. My guard was up. "I don't need looking after."She let out a sigh that was meant to sound concerned. "You're clearly drunk. I can't just leave you here. I'm taking you home."The hypocrisy was almost breathtaking. Just days ago, she was ordering me to drink on Nathan's behalf. Now she was playing the part of the worried partner? I had no idea which version of her was real anymore. When she stepped

On the other end of the line, Lilian fell silent. Then, a note of panic sharpened her voice. "Sierra? What have you done to him? If you have a problem, you deal with me!"Sierra caught my eye and raised an eyebrow, a silent "can-you-believe-this?" smirk on her face. The performance was almost impressive in its falseness.I sighed, took the phone back, and said, my voice flat, "I came to Sierra on my own."A beat of stunned silence. "You're insane," Lilian finally hissed, her voice rising. "You went to my biggest rival? What will people think? What about my reputation?"Even now, it was all about her image. My dignity, the years I'd lost—they were just collateral damage.A dry, mirthless sound escaped me. "Since you couldn't offer me a fair position, I found one for myself."I was about to end the call when her voice rushed back, sharp and desperate. "This is about Nathan, isn't it? You saw that video last night, didn't you? Why didn't you get angry? Why didn't you say anything?"

I sent every one of Lilian's calls to voicemail. Soon, her messages flooded my screen:[Sonny, what is this? I never agreed to a divorce!][If you're going to accuse me of something with Nathan, then fine, maybe I'll just do it!]My reply was a single word: [Okay.]Then I powered down my phone and joined the boarding queue.Sinking into my airplane seat, I let out a long, weary breath.Three years in prison, all of this… it felt like a fever dream. I couldn't believe I had ever been so foolish, taking the fall for Lilian. Even after all that sacrifice, the future I was promised never materialized.I remembered what Sierra, Lilian's rival, had told me before I went inside. "You're wasting your loyalty on that woman. Your talents would be far better appreciated with me."But I had been blind. Three years, my youth, my reputation—all gone. When the plane landed, I turned my phone back on in the taxi. A new video was blowing up the company group chat. There, in the middle of a da
