Chapter 1

When I jumped off Harlow Bridge, my sister, Solana Darnell, was in a hotel suite unwrapping the gauze around her head.

She was not dead. The suicide note, the jump, the funeral. All of it had been staged just to teach me a lesson and force me to be my own person.

A rescue boat had been waiting under the bridge the whole time, with two divers in the water.

Solana was pulled out less than ten seconds after she hit the water. She had not even swallowed any of it.

But when it was my turn, nobody was waiting for me under the bridge. Icy river water rushed up my nose, and I fought my way upward on instinct.

The moment my fingers broke the surface, I thought of Solana’s suicide note again. She had written that the most painful thing in her life was having a sister like me, because I was always competing with her.

When she fell in love with a strawberry cake from some dessert shop, I bought out every new item that shop released.

I refused to quit even after I broke my leg when she got into horseback riding.

When she married Arthur Creese, I married his younger brother, Alden Creese.

She had written that I did not actually like her, that I just could not stand seeing her have something I did not.

However, the truth actually was that I copied everything she did because I liked her. I just wanted to be a little closer to her. I spent years copying her so we would have more things in common, and all it did was make her hate me more.

I let go and let my body sink toward the riverbed. But I did not die right away. Someone fishing at night found me.

By the time the rescue team got there, I had been in the river for twelve minutes.

Someone started doing CPR on me, and bloody water gurgled up out of my mouth.

They found a faint pulse and shouted, “She’s still got a pulse! Hurry and get her to the hospital!”

Not long after the ambulance pulled away, laughter broke out in the living room of the Creese family villa.

Solana came downstairs in her pajamas. Her face was pale, but her eyes were bright.

My mother’s eyes were red from crying. She threw her arms around her. “Sol, you poor thing.”

Solana patted her back and looked toward the doorway. “Where’s Sofia?”

My father snorted. “She took off the second she finished reading the note. She probably knows she’s in trouble and can’t bring herself to face us.”

Alden leaned back on the couch and lit a cigarette. “Where is she going to go? She’s probably holed up in some hotel, waiting for us to come and coax her out.”

Solana pursed her lips. “What if she went to the bridge too?”

Alden sneered. “You’re giving her way too much credit. She copies you because everything you’ve got is worth having. Death isn’t exactly a prize. She’s got no reason to compete with you for it.”

Only then did Solana smile. She sat on the couch and watched the prerecorded video of her jumping off the bridge.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her. I just wanted her to know what it feels like to have your life stolen out from under you.”

My mother nodded. “You did the right thing. Ever since she was little, she’s had to have everything just like you. Isn’t that just her way of trying to prove she’s better than you?”

Just then, Alden’s phone rang.

On the other end of the line was Taylor Holt, a nurse. “Hello, this is the ER at Metro General Hospital.

“Ms. Sofia Darnell has been brought in for a drowning incident and is currently in emergency care. Please have the family come to the hospital as soon as possible.”

He looked at Solana and suddenly laughed. “Well, you called it. She copied you and jumped off the bridge.”

Solana froze for a moment. “How is she?”

“You guys really went all out with this act,” Alden said into the phone. “You even got the hospital in on it?”

Taylor’s voice sounded urgent. “Sir, we are not actors.

“Ms. Darnell is in a deep coma with a large amount of water stuck in her lungs. Her condition is extremely critical. Please come in right away so we can confirm her identity and go over her situation with you.”

Alden’s face went cold. “Tell Sofia that if she thinks faking her death is going to make us cave, then she’s badly mistaken. If she’s got the nerve to copy Solana, then she’d better see it through.”

With that, he hung up.

I lay soaked on the hospital bed in the ER while the monitor blared urgent alarms.

Taylor checked the number one more time. “Doctor, the family hung up on us.”

The doctor, Keith Roland, looked at my blood oxygen dropping steadily. “Keep calling,” he said sharply. “Tell them she’s still alive. If they don’t get here soon, then we’re going to lose her.”

A year later, my family went bankrupt. After my father sold the villa and paid off the debts, all that was left was an old house. It was the place where Solana and I had lived as children. My mother refused to move out. She said that if I ever came home, I would definitely go there first to look for her.My father no longer called her crazy because he was waiting for me, too. Every night at 7 p.m., he would set out one extra set of utensils and make sure there was always strawberry cake on the table. He used to hate sweets, but he bought one every day. When the cake went bad, he would replace it with a fresh one. My mother would always mutter, “Sofia has a sensitive stomach. She can’t eat too much.”So my father would cut the cake into small pieces. “Then she’ll just eat a little.”The two of them talked as if I was really going to sit down and eat. But that chair stayed empty the whole time. After Arthur was sentenced, the Creese family quickly cut ties with him. Solana

My father was the first to crack. The Darnell Group was already strapped for cash. He had been counting on getting my shares back to shore up the board. Instead, the shares went into the charitable fund, and the fund teamed up with minority shareholders to demand his removal. On the day of the meeting, my father slammed the table and yelled, “I founded the Darnell Group! Who are you to kick me out?”A board member, Noah Kennedy, slid a stack of documents across the table. “Mr. Darnell, over the past few years, our three most profitable projects were all closed by Ms. Darnell. After she died, every single partner walked. “Nobody here is kicking you out. The truth is, you haven’t been able to run this company without her for a long time.”When my father was escorted out of the building by security, the entrance was packed with reporters. Someone chased after him and asked, “Mr. Darnell, do you regret hanging up on the hospital?”He shielded his face and did not dare say a wo

A lot of people still came to my funeral. My father had not invited them. They came on their own.The dessert shop employees stood in a row, as did the equestrian coaches. The Darnell Group staff members I had helped were there as well. They brought strawberry cake, equestrian trophies, and haute couture gowns. All of it had to do with Solana. There was even a group photo from the Creese family wedding. When Solana saw those things, she suddenly went berserk.“Take it away! She wasn’t copying me! I got it all wrong!”No one moved. The dessert shop manager, Pricilla Beck, looked at her with tears in her eyes. “Ms. Darnell ate new products until she got a stomachache. It wasn’t because she loved eating. She said you were picky, and she had to find the best-tasting one for you.”The equestrian coach, Stacy Cavallo, spoke up as well. “The time Ms. Darnell broke her leg, it was because your horse suddenly bolted. She rushed over and pushed you out of the way, and that was how sh

My funeral was set for three days later. My mother insisted on not using Solana’s previous funeral hall.“That one is fake. It’s bad luck.”When she said this, no one responded. Solana’s fake funeral had been a grand affair. Flowers covered the entire corridor. Everyone who mattered had shown up.When it came to me, however, my father wanted to keep things low-key.It was not because he did not love me. It was because he was embarrassed. His eldest daughter faked her death to force his younger daughter to change. But the youngest daughter actually followed and jumped into the river. If word got out, the Darnell family would become the laughingstock of the whole city. My father ordered a media blackout. He also demanded that the hospital list the cause of death as accidental drowning.Jonathan said to him coldly, “Mr. Darnell, this is a homicide investigation, not a PR statement for your company.”My father said through gritted teeth, “There’s no evidence this was a homic

The moment my family walked into the hospital morgue, my mother got sick. She braced herself against the wall and vomited. My father stayed where he was. He stared at the bed with an indifferent expression. His hands stayed by his side as they trembled. Alden moved the fastest. He pushed past Jonathan and rushed to my side in a few strides. “Sofia, cut the act. I’m here.”I lay motionless under the white sheet. He leaned down and reached out to touch my face. The instant his fingertips met my skin, he jerked his hand back. It was too cold, just like the dead. They would not warm up again just because he showed up.“It’s not her.” He turned and walked away. “Her face is waterlogged beyond recognition. What makes you say it’s her?”Jonathan blocked his path. “The necklace, the patient ID number, and the preliminary DNA results all match. Family confirmation is just a formality.”“Yeah, right!” He shoved a cart beside him, sending it flipping over. Metal instruments clattered acro

On the first day after my death, Alden had his lawyer prepare the divorce papers. He signed his name at the end and sent me a picture of it. [I’m giving you one last chance. Come back and apologize to Solana, and I won’t make it official.]The message did not go through. He assumed I had blocked him and smashed his phone in a rage.“She’s really getting out of hand these days!”My mother, meanwhile, converted my room into a walk-in closet. She bagged up all the strawberry ornaments I had collected. She planned to throw them out in front of me once I came home.“We need to break her out of this habit for good. From now on, she doesn’t get to touch anything Solana likes.”Solana tried on one of my white dresses and looked at my mother in the mirror. “This is what Sofia wore on her wedding anniversary.”My mother adjusted the hem for her. “It looks better on you.”Solana was silent for a moment and did not take it off. She only said softly, “If she sees this, is she going to go
