~ Nora Vane POV ~

"No one leaves this room," Alpha Silas ordered, his voice ringing against the walls of the council chamber.

The grand doors slammed shut, guarded by four armed enforcers. Outside, the muted murmur of hundreds of confused pack members echoed through the halls, but inside, the air felt suffocatingly still.

Beatrice collapsed into a leather armchair, tears spilling over her mascara as she shook uncontrollably. Evelyn hovered over her, patting her shoulder while glaring at me with pure hatred.

"She tricked him," Beatrice sobbed, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "Father, she used wolf-suppressant herbs. She must have spiked his drink or used dark alchemy to mimic a bond pull! Nora is wolfless—she cannot be an Alpha's mate!"

"She's right, Silas!" Evelyn barked, turning toward the Alpha. "Nora has lived under my roof for eighteen years. She has no wolf, no lineage, and no claim to the Luna throne. This is a fraud. I demand an immediate trial and her execution for treason against the bloodline!"

My stomach plummeted. I looked down at my hand, which was still firmly locked in Caleb’s grip. His fingers were warm, steady, and unyielding. The strange golden energy between our palms was still humming under my skin, impossible to deny.

"I didn't spike anything," I said, keeping my voice as steady as I could. "I was standing in the back of the room doing my job."

"You expect us to believe the Moon Goddess chose a human servant over a pureblood Alpha female?" Beatrice shrieked, standing up so fast her chair scraped against the floor. "You stole my life!"

Alpha Silas stepped down from the head of the long oak table. His expression dark. "Caleb, release her. We will have the pack doctors run a full toxicology screen on you both immediately."

"No," Caleb said.

Silas stopped, his eyes flashing amber. "Excuse me?"

"I said no," Caleb repeated, pulling me half a step behind him. "I don't need a medical test to recognize my own mate. The bond claimed her before the entire pack. It's done."

"It is not done!" Silas growled, his Alpha pressure washing over the room. The air grew thick, making it hard to breathe, but Caleb absorbed the brunt of it without flinching. "You are the future Alpha of Crestfall! You cannot marry a girl without a wolf! It weakens the pack's standing with the Regional Alliance!"

I looked at the furious faces surrounding us. I saw the political disaster unfolding in real time. If this argument continued, it would split the pack into factions before the week was over. And I knew who would pay the price when the dust settled. It wouldn't be Caleb.

"Stop," I said clearly.

Caleb turned his head slightly, looking down at me. "Nora, stay out of this."

"No," I replied, pulling my hand out of his grip. The sudden loss of his touch felt like ice against my skin, but I forced myself to step forward, addressing Alpha Silas directly. "Alpha Silas, I have no desire to bring ruin to Crestfall. I know what I am in the eyes of this council."

"Nora, don't," Caleb warned, his voice taking on a dangerous edge.

I ignored him, looking straight into Silas's eyes. "I will sign a formal bond waiver tonight. I will renounce any claim to the Luna title, relinquish my administrative duties, and leave Crestfall territory before sunrise. You can tell the pack it was a mistake caused by the Blood Moon's magic. I won't contest it."

Beatrice let out a breathy gasp of relief, while Evelyn smirked triumphantly.

"A sensible proposal," Silas said, nodding slowly. "We can draft the waiver immediately—"

"I VETO IT."

The command crashed through the council chamber like a crack of thunder. Caleb’s hereditary Alpha voice vibrated through the floorboards, forcing every person in the room including Silas to freeze for a fraction of a second.

Caleb stepped into my space, his eyes blazing pure, golden fire as he glared down at me. "You don't get to walk away from me, Nora. You don't get to sign away what the Moon Goddess gave us."

"Caleb, be reasonable," I whispered, desperate. "If I stay, they will ruin me."

"They won't touch you," Caleb growled. He turned back to his father, his stance relaxed but immovable. "Nora will not sign a waiver. She will not leave the territory. As the heir, I have the right to evaluate her qualifications for governance publicly before any formal challenge to the bond can be raised."

Silas narrowed his eyes. "She has no wolf, Caleb. What qualifications?"

"She has managed every logistics, supply, and security ledger in this territory for three years while Beatrice took the credit," Caleb said coldly, casting a dark look at my sister, who flushed bright red. "Starting tomorrow morning, Nora is appointed as my personal Chief Executive Assistant in the Alpha Wing. She will oversee all council operations beside me. If the elders still believe she is unfit after seeing her work, we will revisit the topic at the Winter Summit."

"This is ridiculous!" Evelyn protested. "You're bringing a servant into the executive offices?"

"She isn't a servant," Caleb replied, his voice dropping into a low threat. "She is my assistant. And anyone who disrespects her authority in my wing answers to me."

Silas stared at his son for a long, tense minute. Finally, the older Alpha let out a harsh breath. "Fine. She works in your office until the Summit. But if she fails to maintain order, or if the regional Alphas object, the waiver will be signed. Meeting adjourned."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three weeks later, the silence of the Alpha wing was broken only by the rhythmic clicking of my pen against my desk.
Caleb had kept his word. He had moved my workstation directly into the ante-room outside his private suite, giving me full clearance over the pack’s digital archives and financial records. But Beatrice hadn't given up.
Instead of an open attack, Beatrice had launched a quiet, malicious smear campaign. High-ranking she-wolves suddenly refused to hand over departmental reports to me. Important files conveniently went missing from my desk during lunch breaks. Rumors circulated through the estate that I was using my position to leak sensitive details to rival packs.
I didn't cry. I didn't complain to Caleb.
Instead, I sat at my desk every night until two in the morning, cross-referencing every single document Beatrice and her circle had touched over the last three years.
"You're still here," Caleb's deep voice drifted from the doorway.
I looked up from my laptop to see him leaning against the door, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking tired but sharp.
"I'm finishing the quarterly audit," I said, stepping back from the screen to stretch my neck. "The regional council meeting is tomorrow morning, and I want everything organized."
Caleb walked over, stopping right beside my chair. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face. The simple, tender gesture made my chest tighten.
"You don't have to work yourself to death just to prove something to them, Nora," he said softly.
"I'm not doing it for them," I replied, meeting his eyes. "I'm doing it because I refuse to let Beatrice make a fool out of me."
A faint smile touched Caleb's lips. "God, I love your mind."
My heart did a strange, dangerous flutter, but before I could respond, he leaned down, his face inches from mine. "Go to sleep soon, Nora. I need my best strategist clear-headed tomorrow."
******
The next morning, the central assembly hall was packed with council elders, family heads, and Beatrice’s faction. Beatrice stood near mother, wearing a confident grin, clearly anticipating that my lack of progress on the quarterly budget would force Silas to reprimand me publicly.
Alpha Silas sat at the head of the long table. "Nora, present the administrative update for the luxury allocations account."
I stood up from my seat beside Caleb, holding a thick leather binder. I opened it calmly.
"Thank you, Alpha Silas," I began, my voice carrying clearly across the room. "While reviewing the historical accounts from the past two years, I noticed several consistent irregularities in the luxury procurement budget—specifically the funds allocated for Luna event preparations."
Beatrice’s smile wavered slightly.
"According to the signed receipts," I continued, turning a page, "over two hundred thousand dollars was drawn from the pack's emergency relief fund to purchase imported silks, rare wines, and jewelry. These requisitions were all signed under Beatrice's personal administrative authorization code."
Gasps rippled through the elders.
"That's a lie!" Beatrice yelled, standing up with her face pale. "I never touched the relief funds! She's forging documents to ruin my family!"
"I don't forge," I said quietly. I pulled a stack of printed bank statements from the binder and handed them to Elder Lucian, the head of the finance committee. "Here are the original wire transfers, cross-referenced with the merchant serial numbers. The funds were routed to private accounts held by Beatrice and three she-wolves in her council circle."
Elder Lucian adjusted his glasses, scanning the paper. His face darkened immediately. "These are genuine pack banking stamps. This is embezzlement."
Evelyn looked like she had been slapped. "Silas, this is a misunderstanding—"
"Silence!" Silas growled, looking at Beatrice with cold fury. "Is this true?"
Beatrice couldn't speak. She dropped back into her chair, her lip trembling as the surrounding elders muttered in disgust. In a single ten-minute presentation, her social standing and political credibility had been utterly shattered.
Caleb sat beside me, his arms crossed over his chest, a look of immense pride shining in his dark eyes as he caught my glance.
"Effective immediately," Silas announced, his voice tight with embarrassment, "Beatrice Vane is stripped of all event planning authority, and her family's accounts will undergo a full audit. Nora, you will oversee the restructuring of those funds."
"Yes, Alpha," I said smoothly, sitting back down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was past midnight when I finally returned to the administrative wing to pack up my belongings for the night. The victory in the assembly hall had felt good, but the exhaustion was finally catching up to me.

I pushed open the door to my personal quarter off the office suite, stepping inside.

I froze.

The room was destroyed.

My desk had been overturned, papers were torn and scattered across the floor, and my closet had been ripped open, my clothes slashed to ribbons.

In the center of my ruined workspace, pinned to the wall with an iron hunting dagger, was a thick chunk of bloody wolf fur.

Beneath it, written in dark red paint across the white wall, was a simple message:

LEAVE BEFORE THE SUMMIT, OR YOU WILL BE SILENCED PERMANENTLY.

    ~ Nora Vane POV ~"Hold still," Caleb commanded softly.He brought the diagnostic scanner down against the crook of my elbow, the small needle drawing a single vial of blood before sealing the small puncture. My hand remained in his, my fingers cold against his warm, calloused palm. The faint silver luminescence beneath my skin had finally vanished completely, leaving behind only the stark crimson stain on my torn sweater."I don't understand what happened out there," I whispered, watching him insert the vial into the scanner's primary bay. "Wolfless humans don't heal like that. We don't heal at all without medical intervention.""You aren't wounded now," Caleb said, his voice quiet as he initiated the sequence on his terminal. "That's what matters."He pulled up a secure screen, connecting the terminal to the pack's military servers. A progress bar appeared, pulsing blue as it began analyzing the biological sample against the standard pack registries."We'll run a baseline cross-refe

    ~ Nora Vane POV ~"Stay in the command center, Nora. That is a direct order."Caleb pulled his vest tight across his chest, the motion sharp and efficient. The emergency lights bathed the strategy room in a pulsing crimson glare as officers rushed past us, shouting coordinates and pulling ammunition from the armory lockers."Caleb, I can monitor the communications grid from the front line outpost," I said, following him toward the armory doors. "If they're jamming our frequencies, you need someone on site who knows how to manually override the localized relays."He stopped abruptly, turning to grab my arms. His touch was firm, grounding me against the frantic energy filling the hallway. "You aren't leaving the inner keep. The northern ridge is compromised. I am taking the strike team to reinforce the perimeter, and you are staying behind sealed doors.""I'm not helpless," I argued, staring up into his storm-grey eyes."I know you aren't," Caleb muttered, his thumb tracing a brief line

"Caleb, I have work to finish—""I didn't ask, Nora." He said.He stepped over a broken drawer, closing the distance between us in two strides, and grabbed my wrist. His grip was firm, but his thumb brushed over my pulse point, soothing the spike of terror before it could take root. "Someone breached this room Nora. You aren't staying in this wing alone for another second."He didn't give me a chance to argue. He guided me down the long, vaulted corridor toward the double doors at the end of the east hall. The timber of those doors was so thick it swallowed the sounds of the pack house whole, sealed with reinforced bronze hinges that bore the Crestfall coat of arms. Two elite personal enforcers stood guard

    ~ Nora Vane POV ~"Shift the security details on the northern gate by twenty minutes," I told the head guard, adjusting the tablet in my hands as we walked down the grand corridor of the Crestfall Pack house. "If Alpha Silas sees a five-minute gap during the moonfall transition, he’ll have your rank stripped before dawn."The guard nodded quickly, scanning the updated schedule on his own screen. "Thank you, Nora. We’d be lost without you tonight.""Just make sure the perimeter stays quiet," I said, offering a faint smile before turning toward the main hall. Every surface of the pack house gleamed. She-wolves dressed in silk shifted chairs, arranged silver moon-orchids, and hung crimson banners for the Blood Moon ceremony. It was the most sacred event of the decade. Tonight, the Alpha’s heir, Caleb Hayes, would step into his true power, and the pack fully expected him to choose his Luna. Everyone knew who that Luna was supposed to be."Nora!" a sharp, aristocratic voice called out ac
