~ Nora Vane POV ~

"Stay in the command center, Nora. That is a direct order."

Caleb pulled his vest tight across his chest, the motion sharp and efficient. The emergency lights bathed the strategy room in a pulsing crimson glare as officers rushed past us, shouting coordinates and pulling ammunition from the armory lockers.

"Caleb, I can monitor the communications grid from the front line outpost," I said, following him toward the armory doors. "If they're jamming our frequencies, you need someone on site who knows how to manually override the localized relays."

He stopped abruptly, turning to grab my arms. His touch was firm, grounding me against the frantic energy filling the hallway. "You aren't leaving the inner keep. The northern ridge is compromised. I am taking the strike team to reinforce the perimeter, and you are staying behind sealed doors."

"I'm not helpless," I argued, staring up into his storm-grey eyes.

"I know you aren't," Caleb muttered, his thumb tracing a brief line across my cheekbone, a fleeting moment of tenderness amidst the chaos. "That isn't why I need you here. If this is a distraction to draw me away from the pack house, I need to know the heart of our command is secure. Promise me you won't leave this room."

I swallowed against the sudden tightness in my throat and nodded. "I promise."

He gave my arms a single squeeze before turning back to his captains. "Move out! Standard defensive formation! We hold the ridge line at all costs!"

As Caleb and his squad disappeared down the stairwell toward the courtyard, I retreated into the central room. Monitors lined the walls, displaying flickering heat maps of the northern territory. Red blips swarmed near the fence, marking the entry points of the rogue attack.

I sat at the main terminal, routing power to the boundary sensors. Ten minutes passed in tense silence, broken only by the crackle of distant gunfire and static over the radio frequency.

The door of the command room creaked open.

I turned quickly, expecting one of the remaining guards. Instead, Elder Lucian stepped into the room, holding a black transport case stamped with medical cross symbols. His silver hair was neatly slicked back, his expression unreadable as his calculating eyes swept over the empty room.

"Nora," Lucian said, his voice smooth and devoid of urgency. "I'm glad you're still here."

"Elder Lucian," I said, standing up from the console. "Shouldn't you be in the underground bunker with the rest of the council?"

"I was overseeing the supply lines," he replied, walking toward my desk and placing the medical case on the table. "The forward bunker on the western trail just lost communication with the main medical wing. They have three wounded enforcers who require plasma stabilizers immediately."

I looked down at the case, then back at him. "Where are the medical orderlies?"

"Deployed to the eastern perimeter," Lucian said smoothly, leaning slightly on his cane. "The guards are tied down defending the main gate. You are the only person available with high-level clearance who understands the field medical protocols. I need you to take these supplies down the western service tunnel to the forward bunker."

A faint alarm sounded in the back of my mind. "Caleb ordered me to remain in the command center."

Lucian's eyebrows rose in mild condescension. "Alpha Caleb is currently engaged on the open ridge. If those enforcers bleed out because you were too intimidated by orders to deliver life-saving supplies, their deaths will rest on your hands. The service tunnel is entirely subterranean and secure."

He slid the case across the table toward me.

I looked at the flickering heat signatures on the console. The western trail showed no active blips, appearing clear on the radar. If pack enforcers were dying in that bunker, I couldn't sit in a warm room doing nothing just because Caleb told me to stay put.

"Fine," I said, grabbing the handle of the medical case. "I'll take the tunnel."

"Good girl," Lucian murmured, a strange, cold flicker touching his eyes before he turned toward the doorway. "Hurry."

I hurried out of the command center, taking the spiral stairs down to the basement level where the old utility tunnels ran beneath the mountain. The air grew rapidly colder as I navigated the narrow passageway.

I reached the end of the tunnel and pushed open the door that exited near the western ridge. Cold air hit my face instantly.

The forward bunker was twenty yards ahead, half-buried in a snowbank. But as I stepped into the open, my eyes caught something strange in the tree line.

The snow near the western rocks wasn't undisturbed. Deep trenches had been cut through the drifts—footprints that didn't belong to pack guards.

My heart slammed against my ribs. I looked back at the terrain, reading the movement of the broken branches above. The radar in the command room hadn't shown any activity here because the rocks contained high levels of iron ore, creating a dead zone for the sensors.

Lucian knew that. He had sent me directly into a blind spot.

Through the blizzard, I saw the silhouette of Caleb's strike team fighting near the ridge line fifty yards away. They were holding off a line of rogue wolves, but they were focused forward. They didn't see the four massive shapes creeping silently through the treeline, flanking their right side.

"Caleb!" I screamed, dropping the medical case into the snow. "Right flank! Behind the ridge line!"

My voice carried over the howling wind. Caleb turned instantly, his storm-grey eyes locking onto me across the snowfield. His expression transformed into horror as he realized where I was standing and what was moving behind him.

Because I had shouted, the flanking rogues abandoned their stealth. Two of them spun around, their dark, feral eyes fixing onto me.

"Nora, run!" Caleb roared, sprinting toward me as he slammed his knife into an attacking wolf's throat.

I turned to run back toward the tunnel door, but the snow was too deep. A massive rogue warrior in human form, his face scarred and his jaw set in a cruel sneer, burst from the treeline and cut off my path.

He lunged at me with a long, serrated hunting blade.

I dodged sideways, but my foot caught on a buried root. I fell backward into the snow, and the blade cut deeply across my left forearm.

Pain tore through my arm, sharp and agonizing. Warm blood spilled over my sleeve, dripping down onto the pristine white snow beneath me.

"Pathetic human," the rogue snarled, raising his blade for a final strike.

I raised my arms to defend myself, staring down at the snow where my blood was pooling.

Then, the world seemed to freeze.

Where my blood touched the snow, a bright, blinding white light ignited. It wasn't ordinary blood. It glowed with a brilliant, silver-white luminescence that flared upward like liquid starlight.

The pain in my arm vanished instantly.

I watched in utter shock as the deep, jagged tear in my forearm began to knit together. The silver light flowed through my veins, visible beneath my skin like liquid lightning. Within three seconds, the skin reattached, smooth and unblemished, leaving only a fading silver mark where the deep wound had been.

The rogue froze, his blade hovering in mid-air, his eyes wide with terror. "What... what are you?"

Before he could take another breath, a blur of motion slammed into him.

Caleb arrived like a tempest. He grabbed the rogue by the throat, his face distorted by a feral, terrifying rage that I had never seen before. With a sickening snap, he broke the rogue's neck and threw the body aside into the snowdrifts.

The remaining rogue attempted to charge, but Caleb turned on him with terrifying speed, eliminating the attacker in seconds. The snowfield fell dead silent, save for the sound of Caleb's breathing.

He stood over the fallen bodies, covered in dark crimson stains, his chest heaving as his dark eyes locked onto mine. The protective instinct radiating from him was so intense.

He dropped to his knees in the snow beside me, his large hands grabbing my shoulders. "Nora! Where are you hurt? Show me!"

"I... I'm not," I stammered, my head spinning as I looked down at my arm. The sweater sleeve was ripped and soaked in blood, but the skin underneath was completely whole.

Caleb grabbed my left wrist, pulling my arm up to inspect it. He stared at the smooth skin, then down at the glowing silver stain fading in the snow beneath us. His hands trembled slightly against my skin.

"How did you do that?" he whispered, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of awe and terror. "Nora... what just happened?"

"I don't know," I breathed, looking up at him. "I swear I don't know."

Without another word, Caleb slid one arm beneath my knees and the other behind my back, lifting me effortlessly into his arms. He stood up, tucking my head securely against his chest as he began marching back toward the pack house, ignoring the arriving enforcers who were securing the perimeter.

"Alpha! The ridge is clear!" a captain called out, running up to us. "Do you need medical support?"

"Clear the field and double the watch," Caleb barked, not slowing his pace for a single second. "Nobody enters the main keep until I give the order. Nobody."

He carried me through the gates, up the grand staircase, and straight into his private suite. He slammed the doors shut behind us, engaging the manual locks with a clack that sealed us off from the rest of the world.

He set me down gently on the edge of the large examination table in his private medical alcove. His face was pale, his jaw set so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek.

He turned to a secure wall cabinet, unlocked it, and pulled out a sleek, military-grade diagnostic scanner. He powered it on, its blue screen casting a harsh light over the room.

"Caleb, talk to me," I pleaded, my voice trembling as the adrenaline began to fade. "You're scaring me."

"You were slashed with a serrated blade," Caleb said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he walked back over to me. He held up a tall silver mirror from the side table, placing it in front of my face. "Look at yourself, Nora."

I looked into the mirror.

My cheeks were flushed, but beneath the surface of my skin, thin silver veins were still glowing softly, tracing intricate patterns up my neck and across my collarbone. The light was slowly receding, fading back into my skin like embers dying in the dark, but there was no denying what was there.

"You have no wolf," Caleb whispered, his grey eyes meeting mine in the mirror's reflection, filled with a deep, consuming wonder. "So tell me... why is there ancient power running through your blood?”

"If Lucian sends his guards to search my room—""Finn's team is already clearing it," Caleb interrupted. He crossed the room, stopping right in front of me. "Anything that links you to the old archives, anything that doesn't look like a standard administrator's life, is being moved. You stay here tonight. Under my guard."The room was vast, lit only by the soft glow of the city lights filtering through the windows. Standing this close to him, I could feel the heat radiating off his broad chest. My heart gave a sudden, betraying thump."We need to get you out of those torn clothes," he said softly. My eyes widened slig

You aren't staying in this wing alone for another second."He didn't give me a chance to argue. He guided me down the long, vaulted corridor toward the double doors at the end of the east hall.
