Chapter 2

Autor: Sean Jeans
My teacher thought I was crying tears of joy. “Mandy, you’ve worked so hard! This is a reward for your hard work. Don’t worry, it’ll be smooth sailing from now on.”

She hugged me, patted my back, and comforted me like a mother.

I had been living alone and staying strong for many years. The sudden warmth of long-lost care overwhelmed me. I could not help but cling to her and cry.

I cried for the life I had missed in my previous life.

I hated Fiona for her cruelty.

My teacher was right. This was a reward for me.

From this day on, it would be smooth sailing for me.

After lunch, my teacher and her husband accompanied me home to get my ID.

The moment we entered the village, I heard gossip in my house.

The village chief and his family refused to leave my house. Their son insisted on marrying Fiona.

I lowered my head. I could not help but smirk.

Before we even got close, the commotion reached our ears. I was so nervous that I grabbed my teacher’s arm.

My teacher knew I did not come from a decent family, but even she had not expected such chaos either.

Fiona burst out in tears as she charged out of the house. The cripple grabbed her hand and tried to grope her.

“Mandy, you’re back! Come here! You’re the one they want to marry off!”

The instant Fiona saw me, it was like she had spotted a lifeline. She reached for me to try to pull me into the exchange.

I took a step back, hid behind my teacher, and sobbed.

I had already explained to my teacher how my father had lost everything gambling and intended to sell his daughter.

My teacher was kind. She could not bear to watch me suffer. Similarly, she could not bear to watch Fiona being treated like that. That was why she had her husband step in and rescue Fiona.

My teacher entered the house.

The village chief recognized her and immediately became polite.

“Mr. David, no matter what, you shouldn’t sell your daughter. It’s illegal!”

As my teacher reasoned with everyone, Fiona glared at me in hatred. I kept my head down in silence.

The village chief’s son recounted the morning’s event. “She let me touch her, so she has to marry me!”

Fiona tried to explain again in resignation as tears streamed down her face. “That wasn’t me! The one you touched was Mandy!”

She pointed at me.

My hair was messy, and my eyes were swollen from crying. I was nowhere near as pretty as my vain sister.

The village chief glanced at me before looking away without interest. He then took out Fiona’s ID. “Don’t try to fool me! I can read just fine!”

Fiona tried to snatch her ID away but failed.

She glanced at me and stomped her foot. She bitterly recounted the events of last night. She said she tried to help me but did not realize she had given her own ID instead.

I clutched to my teacher’s arm and whispered to her, “When I heard my dad wanted to sell me last night, I ran to your house immediately and only returned to the village just now.”

A woman outside who had watched the drama unfold chimed in, “I saw Mandy run out of the village around 10 p.m. last night.”

My teacher confirmed it with a nod as she had promised. “Yes, Mandy was with me the whole time.”

Luckily, there were no surveillance cameras in the village.

No one believed Fiona’s words.

My teacher cited the school and the law, then argued relentlessly until she finally thwarted the village chief’s plan to use the incident to force Fiona into a marriage.

Fiona narrowly escaped disaster.

I went to my father and retrieved my ID.

“Fiona, my teacher said I got accepted into a university. Did you see my admission letter?

“It’s fine if you didn’t. I can always get a replacement letter.”

Fiona reluctantly gave me the admission letter.

After that, she dragged me into a corner behind the house. She dug her fingers into my arm. “Mandy, you came back, didn’t you?”

I rubbed my swollen eyes and asked in confusion, “I didn’t. My teacher brought me back here in the afternoon.”

“Stop acting dumb in front of me! I’m talking about five years from now!

“You were supposed to stay far away from me. You weren’t supposed to return and frame me!

“You know exactly whose ID that really is!”

I stopped pretending. I let out a cold snort. “Yeah. And you know exactly whose it is as well.”

Even though we were sisters, there was not a trace of warmth between us. There was only hostility.

I grabbed her arm in return. “All my life, I let you have everything! I fed your greed, and you tried to steal my university admission!

“Fiona, you’re not taking anything from me this time.”

I shoved her hard without any mercy.

“Fiona, I’m not going to die with you. This time, you can go to hell on your own!”After finishing my statement at the police station, I saw Thomas waiting outside anxiously for me.The moment I showed up, he pulled me into a tight hug.I wanted to joke to lighten the tension, but I immediately noticed that he was trembling. My shoulders were damp from his tears. He did not let go until the police came over to interrupt us. Even then, he switched to holding my hand tightly and did not let go.When we reached home, I tried to comfort him. “I’m fine. I’m right here.”He did not even turn on the lights. Instead, he held me so tightly against his chest that I could feel every beat of his heart.“Mandy, I had a nightmare.“I dreamed that Fiona pushed you down the stairs!“If you died, I… I wouldn’t want to live either.”I froze. That had actually happened in another lifetime. It replayed in my mind.I licked my dry lips. “W-what else did you dream about?”“I dreamed that I lov

Fiona let out a bitter laugh and pointed at herself. “Do you think there’s any difference between living like this and not living at all? Maybe if I die, there’s still a chance that—”I shook my head. “No! There won’t be another chance! Have you gone nuts from reading too many novels? Do you really think we can return to the past infinitely?”“Why not? Have you forgotten that we—” She stopped abruptly. Then, she snorted and said, “You’re stalling for time, are you?”Fiona stopped wasting words and barked at the three thugs, “Do what we agreed on.”I took off the necklace that was around my neck. “This is a gold necklace. It’s worth 80 thousand dollars.“Fiona might not fear death, but are you three not scared?“I’m the Wood family heir’s fiancee. I can give you more money than anything Fiona’s promised.”Sure enough, the trio hesitated. They had no idea who I really was.Fiona grabbed one of them. “Don’t be stupid! You’re already in too deep. The Wood family won’t give you a

“I’m telling the truth!” Fiona shouted. Everyone in the hall fell silent. There were more than a hundred guests at the banquet. They silently watched the drama unfold.“We didn’t meet in a hotel. We haven’t slept together.”I did not expect Thomas to openly say something like that.Stephanie pressed her lips together to hide her laughter. She gave Thomas a thumbs-up. At the same time, she said disdainfully, “Son, you need to put in more effort to win your future wife’s heart. You need to work harder!”Fiona shook her head. “Impossible! You two have been living under the same roof for more than a year!”Thomas did not even bother to explain. “If you can’t provide evidence, then get ready for jail.“And you, Mr. Bradley, I’ll wait for your reply till midnight.”Mr. Bradley was Fiona’s sugar daddy. He immediately said in fear, “Mr. Thomas, don’t worry. I’ll cut ties with her right away!”Fiona stared at her sugar daddy in disappointment. “I’m pregnant…”“I don’t even know if the

Once, when I was accompanying Stephanie to a banquet, I overheard two ladies talking. They assumed I was some scheming woman who had somehow discovered Thomas’ identity early and used tricks to claim him as mine. Otherwise, they could not fathom how someone like me could even know someone like Thomas.Undoubtedly, Fiona had to be the one who spread the rumor. The two ladies looked down on Fiona, too. They believed both of us were gold-diggers.I cleared my throat and faked a cough. The two ladies froze mid-conversation. They awkwardly greeted Stephanie.I smiled at them. “Since you’re so curious about us, I can invite Thomas and your husbands to join in on the conversation and gossip together. How does that sound?”Stephanie jumped in to support me. “That’s a good idea!”She raised her hand and waved Thomas over. The two ladies anxiously waved their hands to dismiss the idea. “We were just joking around! Ms. Stephanie, we’re sorry. We were only…”Meanwhile, Thomas reached us.

Although the students in our campus could not figure out his bizarre change of attitude toward me, the controversy finally died down a little. I saw Fiona sneaking around outside the university.“Why did Ashton help you?”She was dressed almost exactly like me, and I could not help but ask, “Did you seduce Ashton?”Fiona scowled. “He was supposed to be my boyfriend! If you hadn’t gotten in the way—”I slapped her. “Fiona, wake up! Face reality!”She still clung to her past life and refused to give up.The slap jolted her back to the present. She cradled her face and cried, “Why?! Why did he abandon me?“He said he loved me! I thought he loved me as the person that I am!“When we meet, he’s so shy. I even kissed him…”Realization hit me. I finally figured out why Ashton had claimed that I liked him.I did not expect Fiona to show up in front of him.“This time, I’ll let it slide. Don’t ever show up in front of me again!”I turned around and left.Fiona screamed from behin

I looped my arm through Thomas’ and gave him a gentle, charming smile. “Let me introduce you to my boyfriend.”Ashton sat obediently on the couch in the living room. He nervously picked at the cushions. He lowered his head. He dared not look at his older brother.I crossed my legs and chuckled.I told Ashton to show the pictures on his phone to Thomas, along with the rumors circulating on campus.Thomas frowned after he finished looking at the pictures. “I’ll take care of this.”I waved my hand dismissively. I raised an eyebrow as I told Thomas how Ashton had stopped me at school. Thomas looked up and was about to strike Ashton, but with a loud thump, Ashton dropped to his knees. He raised his hands in surrender.“Thomas, I was wrong! I’ll fix it right away. I’ll handle everything!”Thomas pointed at me. “She’s my wife. Show her some respect!”Ashton was confused. “Wife? But you’re not even married yet.”“Once she finishes her studies, we’ll get married,” said Thomas firmly.
