I knew something was wrong the moment I heard the door slam. It wasn’t just loud. It was sharp, the kind of sound that made your chest tighten before your mind could even catch up. I pushed myself up slowly from the bed, my body still weak, my head slightly heavy from everything that had happened over the past few days. My hand instinctively moved to my stomach, pressing lightly, as if to remind myself to stay calm.
“Adrian?” I called, my voice softer than I intended.
But he didn't respond.
Instead, I heard his footsteps. Fast and heavy. Coming straight toward the room. The door opened abruptly, and I froze. The look on his face made my stomach drop instantly.
There was no distance in his expression this time. No cold indifference. No quiet detachment. Just pure anger and I began to wonder what was wrong.
“I knew it,” he said.
The words came out low and filled with irritation and I was beginning to get scared, wondering what was wrong.
I blinked, trying to understand. “Knew what?”
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked further into the room and pulled out a folded paper from his hand before throwing it onto the bed in front of me. It landed close to my lap.
I stared at it for a second before picking it up slowly.
The moment I saw the bold letters at the top, my fingers tightened. DNA Test Result.
My heart started beating faster.
“What is this?” I asked quietly, looking up at him.
Adrian let out a short, humorless laugh. “Don’t act like you don’t know.”
“I don’t,” I said, my voice slightly firmer now. “Where did you get this from?”
He stepped back slightly instead of answering, his jaw tightening. And that was when I saw Caroline.
Standing near the door watching. Just like before.
My chest tightened painfully.
“This was sent to my office this morning,” Adrian said. “And guess who sent it.”
I looked at him, confusion building quickly inside me. “Who?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Your best friend.” The words didn’t make sense. Not immediately.
“What?” I whispered.
He shook his head slowly, like he couldn’t believe it himself, but there was no doubt in his eyes. “I was surprised too. But at least she had the decency to tell me the truth.”
My grip on the paper loosened.
“That’s not possible,” I said quickly. “Lila would never do something like that.”
“She already did,” he replied sharply. “She sent me the report herself.”
“No,” I shook my head, my chest tightening. “No, this is wrong. Something is wrong with this. You have to listen to me.”
“I’ve been listening to you for months,” he cut in. “And now I finally understand why nothing ever made sense.”
My breath caught. “What is that supposed to mean?”
He stepped closer this time, his gaze hard. “You lied to me.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
“I didn’t lie to you,” I said immediately.
“You did,” he replied without hesitation. “You told me you couldn’t conceive. That all those doctor visits meant something. That there was a reason. And all along…” He let out a sharp breath. “All along you were seeing another man.”
My eyes widened. “What?”
“And now you’re pregnant,” he continued, his voice rising slightly. “And you expect me to believe it’s mine?”
My entire body went still.
For a moment, I couldn’t even process what he was saying.
“That’s not true,” I said, my voice shaking now. “None of that is true.”
He laughed again, but there was nothing funny about it. “Then explain this.” He gestured toward the paper in my hand. “Explain how the result says the child isn’t mine.”
I looked down at it again, my vision slightly blurred from the tears threatening to come out. It didn’t make sense, none of it did.
“I’ve never seen this before,” I said, my voice barely steady. “I don’t even know where this came from.”
“Of course you don’t,” he replied coldly.
“I’m telling you the truth,” I said, looking up at him again. “Adrian, please. You have to believe me.”
But the moment the words left my mouth, I already knew he didn’t.
He wasn’t even considering it. He had already made up his mind.
“I trusted you,” he said quietly.
And somehow, that hurt more than everything else.
“I didn’t do this,” I whispered.
He shook his head slowly, like he was done listening.
“You hid the pregnancy,” he continued. “You never told me. Why? Because you knew I would find out eventually?”
My chest tightened painfully.
“I was going to tell you,” I said quickly. “I just needed time…”
“Time for what?” he snapped. “To come up with another lie?”
I flinched slightly.
“That’s not fair,” I said, my voice breaking despite my effort to keep it steady.
“Fair?” he repeated, almost like the word offended him. “You’re talking about fair?”
I couldn’t speak.
Not because I didn’t have anything to say but because nothing I said seemed to matter anymore.
Behind him, Caroline was still standing and watching everything unfold. “ Adrian calm down pls” she said like she was a good person. That small smile.
My stomach twisted.
“This explains everything,” Adrian said finally. “The distance, the excuses, everything.”
“No, it doesn’t,” I said weakly. “You’re just choosing to believe something that isn’t true.”
“I’m choosing what’s in front of me,” he replied.
And that was it.
That was the moment I understood that this wasn’t a conversation, this wasn’t something I could fix.
He had already decided.
I lowered my gaze slightly, my fingers tightening around the edge of the paper.
My chest felt heavy.
Tight.
Like something inside me was slowly collapsing.
“I didn’t betray you,” I said quietly.
But it sounded empty.
Even to me.
Adrian didn’t respond.
Instead, he took a step back, his expression cold again.
“I’ll have the divorce papers sent to you,” he said. “You can sign them when they arrive.”
The words settled in the air like something final.
I looked up at him in shock.
I just sat there holding the paper and trying to breathe properly.
“Adrian…” I started, but my voice failed me.
He didn’t wait.
Didn’t look back.
He turned and walked out of the room with Caroline like there was nothing left to say.
Like I was no longer something he needed to deal with.
The door closed behind him.
And just like that…
Everything felt empty.
I sat there for a long time, staring at the paper in my hands, even though I wasn’t really seeing it anymore. How could Lila do this to me?
Why would she create a fake DNA report?
My hand slowly moved to my stomach again.
How would I take care of the baby now?
Everything else felt like it was falling apart.
CHAPTER SIXADRIANBy the time I got home, it was already past ten.The house was quiet. Too quiet.I loosened my tie as I stepped inside, barely paying attention to anything around me at first. My mind was still occupied with work calls, unfinished reports, and the conversation I had with Caroline earlier. She had asked if I was okay.I told her I was fine.Because I was.At least, I thought I was.I dropped my keys on the table and walked further into the living room. The lights were dim, the entire house still in a way that immediately felt strange.Usually, Noelle left one light on for me.Even if we barely spoke these days.Even if I came home late.Tonight, there was nothing.I frowned slightly and looked around before heading upstairs. The bedroom door was slightly open when I got there.I pushed it wider and stepped inside. Then I stopped.Something was different. At first, I couldn’t place it. The room looked exactly the same. Everything was neat, untouched, arranged the way
NOELLE The papers arrived the next morning. They were placed neatly on the table beside my bed, like they were something ordinary. Like they didn’t carry the weight of a marriage ending. For a long time, I didn’t touch them. I just stared. My name was already printed there. His too.Everything looked so official. So we were really getting divorced.I reached for them slowly, my fingers hesitating just before they made contact. For a moment, I wondered if I should wait. If I should talk to him again. If I should try one more time to make him listen. But deep down, I already knew that there was nothing left to fix.Adrian had already made his decision the moment he chose to believe that report over me. The moment he looked at me like I was a stranger. The moment he stopped listening.I picked up the pen.My hand trembled slightly as I flipped through the pages. Each line felt heavier than the last. Words like separation, settlement, agreement. Words that had nothing to do with love.My

NOELLEI didn’t go to the shop the next day. Lila called twice. The first time, I let it ring out. Then the second time, I picked up and told her I wasn’t coming in.She didn’t ask too many questions. “Be careful Noelle. You're carrying a child now and you know how your body gets when you're stressed.” I smiled slightly, happy that at least I still had someone who cared about me. “ I'll be fine Lila don't worry. I'll be at the shop tomorrow.” “ Don't you dare!!. I'll handle the shop for you so you can stay home till next week” I didn't agree with her but I didn't wanna argue either so I said yes and ended the call. My body felt different. I wasn't just tired and weak but I had pains all over. Guess the pains came with pregnancy. The doctor had warned me a long time ago that getting pregnant wouldn’t be easy for me. Even now, after it finally happened, she had still been careful with her words.I needed rest and I needed to avoid stress. I needed to be careful with everything but it i
NOELLEThe shop smelled like fresh roses when I walked in.It was the one place that always felt calm and safe for me. Like nothing from my personal life could follow me inside.“Finally,” a voice said from behind the counter. “I was starting to think you forgot you owned this place.”I looked up and smiled slightly.“Good morning, Lila.”She walked toward me immediately, arms crossed, eyes scanning my face like she was searching for something.“You look tired,” she said bluntly.I shrugged, setting my bag down. “I’m fine.” but she didn’t believe me. She never did.“You always say that,” she replied. “And you’re never actually fine.” I didn’t respond.Instead, I busied myself arranging a few flowers that didn’t need arranging. Customers started coming in to buy flowers but Lila didn't stop pressing me on the issue.“Did you tell him?”My hands froze for a second before continuing.“No.”Lila let out a frustrated sigh. “Noelle.”“I’ll tell him,” I said quickly. “I just… haven’t found t
NoelleThe first thing I did when I stepped out of the hospital was hold my stomach.Just a light touch, like I needed to reassure myself it was real. I had been pregnant for a while now, and I had just finished my weekly checkup.Even after hearing the doctor say it twice.Even after seeing the results clearly in front of me.I should have been happy… I was happy. But the feeling didn’t last long enough to settle.Because the moment I thought about telling Adrian… it disappeared.I stood by the side of the road for a few seconds longer than necessary, watching cars pass by like I had nowhere to be. Like going home wasn’t something I was ready for.Adrian didn’t like distractions. That was the simplest way to describe it. Anything that didn’t fit into his plans, his schedule, his routine… he had no time for it.And lately, I wasn’t even sure if I still fit into any of those things. Our marriage had never been loud or dramatic. It was quiet, structured, and carefully planned. We didn’t
