LOGINI met Lawson in the hallway talking to his lawyer, I had to wait for him to be through with the lawyer before approaching him.
“Hi Lawson, how have you been? I hope you are good? Just take it easy with yourself everything will be alright”. I didn't even know what to say to him.
“ I am fine as you can see, I am exactly where you and your friends wanted me to be. Thanks to you guys”. He left hurriedly.
While I watched Lawson disappear into thin air, I noticed my phone ringing.
“ Hi Mom, long time, how have you been?”.
“ I don't need your greetings, tell me what I am hearing is a lie, how do you do such a thing to your husband?” She blasted me.
“ Mom, I didn't do anything. He caused the problem for himself so let him deal with it. He beat Aaron up and he charged him to court, how is that my business?”
“ What is Aaron doing in your studio, your Dad warned you about that guy but you wouldn't listen, you told us it's not what we were thinking, see what you caused now”.
“ Why do you like to blame me for everything, can't I choose to be friends with Aaron? I am not a baby please”. I hung up the call.
I couldn't help it, I had to call my Dad. Let's see if he will blame me also.
“Dad, how are you faring? Dad, are you aware of what Lawson got himself into?” I want to hear what he will say.
“ What he got himself into or what you caused? If you had listened to us that day and gone back to him or better still followed us home, all of this would not have happened. But you chose to do what's in your mind.” I can't believe what I just heard him say. A family should always have each other's backs, but my own family will never do that for me.
I continued to go to my workplace every day and ran my business without any problems. I followed Aaron to the hospital once for a proper check-up, and was told he was okay now.
It's finally the Court Day, after the judge settled down
Court Clerk:
The people of the State of New York versus Lawson Webmar, charged with assault in the second degree.
Judge:
Counsel, you may proceed with your closing arguments. Prosecution first.
Prosecutor’s Closing Argument
Prosecutor (rises, walks slowly toward the judge):
Ladies and gentlemen,
This case is not complicated.
You have heard from Beatrice, an eyewitness with a clear account. You heard from Aaron, the victim, who stood before you and told you exactly what happened. And you heard from a medical professional who confirmed the severity of those injuries.
All of their testimonies point to one undeniable truth:
The defendant, Lawson Webmar, chose violence.
Not self-defense.
Not confusion.
Not an accident.
Violence.
He confronted his wife. He saw Aaron. And instead of walking away, instead of speaking like a reasonable person, he attacked.
You heard Aaron tell you he did not fight back.
You heard Beatrice tell you the defendant kept hitting him.
You heard the doctor explain that those injuries were not from a single blow.
And what did the defendant do afterward?
Did he help?
Did he call for help?
No, he ran away.
That is not the action of someone who made a mistake.
That is the action of someone who knew exactly what he had done.
The defense wants you to focus on emotions—jealousy, anger, assumptions. But emotions do not excuse assault. In this court, we are governed by the law, not by rage.
No matter what the defendant believed—
He had no right to lay his hands on another human being.
The evidence is clear. The testimony is consistent. The truth is undeniable.
We ask you to find the defendant Guilty.
Thank you.
Defense Attorney’s Closing Argument.
Defense Attorney (stands calmly, measured tone):
Ladies and gentlemen,
The prosecution wants you to believe this is a simple case.
But it is not.
Because real life is not simple. People are not perfect. And situations, especially those involving marriage, emotion, and betrayal are rarely as clear as they seem.
Let’s take a closer look.
Yes, there was an argument.
Yes, there was a confrontation.
And yes, my client acted in a moment of intense emotion.
But the question before you is not whether something happened.
The question is, has the prosecution proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that this was a deliberate criminal assault?
Look carefully at the witnesses.
Beatrice—
a former employee who was dismissed by my client. Now working for his wife.
Can we completely ignore the possibility of bias?
Aaron—
a man deeply involved in a personal situation between a husband and wife.
Are we certain we heard the full story of what was said at that moment?
And even the doctor could not tell you who caused those injuries or exactly how they occurred.
What we have is a heated, emotional confrontation.
A husband, already in distress, walks into a situation that confirms his worst fears.
At that moment, he reacted.
Not with planning.
Not with the intent to cause serious harm.
But as a human being overwhelmed by emotion.
That does not make his actions right.
But it does mean this case is not as clear-cut as the prosecution suggests.
And in this courtroom, “not clear” means something very important.
It means reasonable doubt.
If there is doubt, real, reasonable doubt
Then the law requires only one outcome.
My client pleads guilty based on emotion.
Judge:
This court has carefully reviewed the testimony of the witnesses, the medical evidence, and the arguments presented by both counsel.
The testimony of the eyewitness, Beatrice, was clear and consistent.
The victim, Aaron Cole, provided a credible account of the events.
The medical evidence supports the conclusion that the injuries sustained were the result of multiple blows.
The defendant, Lawson Webmar, admitted to hitting the victim countless times, claiming he acted out of anger. However, anger does not justify violence.
This court finds that the defendant intentionally caused physical injury to another person.
Judge:
The court finds you guilty of assault in the third degree. However, the court has considered the circumstances, your lack of prior record, and the fact that you have expressed remorse.
This court believes a custodial sentence is not necessary.
Sentence
Judge (firmly):
You are sentenced to:
3 years probation, Completion of an anger management program,
Payment of restitution to Aaron Cole for his medical expenses
And a fine payable to the court
Judge (looking directly at Lawson):
Let me be clear, this is your opportunity to correct your behavior.
If you violate these terms, you may face imprisonment.
(I exhale in relief. Aaron remains calm, but satisfied).
Court Clerk:
All rise. Court.
This is unbelievable; is this not the same Lawson who promised me heaven and earth? At first, I wondered what I had done to him that made him change his mind towards me, but I concluded that he wasn't a baby who didn't know what he wanted.I thought we now had a perfect home since I can see traces of him changing, and the way he supported me in the last few days, but it's clear to me now that he has chosen the path he wants to follow and the way he wants to find happiness. We can find how we chose to be happy separately, and I can say I would also find a way to. I went upstairs, freshened up, and retired to my bed. I slept as if nothing had happened. I promised myself not to react or say anything about what happened between Sussie and Lawson tonight. The next morning, I woke up healthy and sound. I went downstairs and saw Caroline in the kitchen preparing breakfast. I don't feel like seeing or talking to either Sussie or Lawson. “ Good morning Caroline, can you please make my breakf
I think Grace explained what happened in my house when she got home. I finished eating, and Caroline brought my phone because I had a call.I didn't want to pick up the call since it's my Dad, but I gave it a second thought and answered it.“ Hello, Dad, it's been a while, I am good. Nothing happened, we are fine. Lawson sends his regards too. Bye.” I didn't give him any chance to feel pity for me. But deep down, I am not fine with what's happening.I had a second thought about why Dad could be calling. It might be that he wanted to query why I had to call the officers for Grace or why we chased her out of our home, not feeling any pity for me because someone got pregnant for my husband. I didn't even give him a chance to ask questions. But something is not clear to me. Why is Grace questioning Lawson when he asked her to leave? Is there something I need to know or is there something they are not telling us?I will keep an eye on them.We retired to the bed for the night and it occurr
The look on Grace’s face when she saw Sussie was indeed questionable. And even though she asked the question as if she owned the house.“ I am carrying Lawson's baby, that's why I am staying here.” She responded.I barely made it upstairs when I heard Grace screaming, which gave me no choice but to go back downstairs to intervene.“ Why won't these people allow me to rest for crying out loud, it's just from one problem to the other." I voiced our loudI got downstairs and discovered it was Sussie and Grace again. What could be the problem? Do they know each other from somewhere or what could be the reason they are shouting at each other?“ You got pregnant for who?” I heard Grace ask Sussie who was perfectly seated on the sofa.“ What's your problem with that? And how is it your business? Rachel being Lawson's wedded wife didn't complain, so I don't know why you are being dramatic here.” She said gently“ You can't be pregnant with my sister's husband, they are legally married so it's
I arrived at work unhappily, you should know the reason for that. Now that I think I have finally accepted to be wholly, I prayed he would change into a better person as promised and live happily ever after.I promise myself not to be dramatic during the whole pregnancy situation, and if Lawson happens to be the father of the child, I will adopt the child if it were mine.“Rachel, where are you?” Grace is shouting from outside my studio“ You don't want to answer me right? You'd better come out. I know you are in your office, come out.” She was shouting at the top of her voice outside.“ Your sister is outside creating a scene, we don't know what the problem was, she doesn't want to come in, but she insists you come outside”. She said hurriedly and left.I peeked through the blinds and saw her pacing outside the studio, yelling my name loud enough to turn heads across the block. My hands shook as I grabbed my phone. I don't want any drama from Grace, not today.I dialled an emergency
She looked at me as if she should give me a slap, but I ignored her and led the way to the room we wanted to appoint for her.“ This will be your room, stay where you are asked to stay, and don't trespass”. I said and was about to leave. Lawson was behind me looking like a lost sheep.“How can this untidy room be my room? I need a room upstairs, don't forget I am carrying Lawson's child.” She stood outside the room, she didn't want to go inside. The room is not untidy, it's beside Caroline’s room. It was the room Lawson locked me in when he brought those girls. It's not that bad. I cleaned it when I was staying there.“ You can't get any room upstairs, so you should stay here. The room upstairs is not for an Intruder like you. You can't come here from nowhere and start ordering people around just because you are carrying a baby that hasn't been confirmed as mine”. He said and went upstairs.“ I know it's this witch you call your wife that is controlling you, how can you put your baby
What do you mean by that statement? You barge into someone's house very early in the morning, and you dare to talk trash” I fired back. She looked at me from head to toe with a disdainful expression, hissed, and then looked at Lawson.“ Lawson, what is going on here? Tell me it's not what I am thinking?” She wanted an answer for whatever she was thinking at that moment. She was fully in the sitting room now, as Lawson left the doorway to sit on the sofa.“ I don't know whatever thing you are thinking but let me clear the air, I am Mr Lawson’s lawful wedded wife, therefore standing right before you here is Mrs Lawson.” I dropped the bombshell and sat beside my husband.I can tell she was shocked, it was very obvious to the extent that she couldn't control it“You must be joking, Lawson, tell me that what this harlot said is nothing but a lie.” She faced him but Lawson kept mute and I hung onto him.“Lawson says something, is it true you are married? No wonder you always ignore my calls
I made sandwiches and tea for breakfast.“Breakfast is ready, come down and eat,” I called Lawson who is still upstairs getting ready for the office.“I will join you soon,” he replied. He was downstairs as promised and we ate breakfast together.“ Thanks for breakfast. Would you like it if I drop
It's been a long time since I had sex, even before Lawson and I quarrelled, but I must confess, this is one of the best, it excites me the way he touches every part of my body. There is a question I used to ask myself, why can't I resist his touch? Why can't I ignore him when he touches me and act
I am happy that the case is closed now. Lawson learnt his lesson in a big way. Aaron also received compensation from Lawson. Of course, that would never be a problem for a billionaire. Everybody is good. What will be my faith now that the case is closed, I am still staying with Roselyn and Lawson b
