Chapter 4 - Beware of a man with an inferiority complex.

“He used his dead brother’s pictures to catfish us. How dare he?”

‘Keep it down Cyan Zoey just slept.” I had tried to hush the bewildered Cyan.

“He is so creepy,” she sighed, “see this is why we should do background checks, you wouldn’t have to go out with a dead man.”

She had immediately taken out her phone to call Cain to swindle him into doing background checks for the remaining potential dates. I tried to have a positive outlook of the whole thing, but the future didn’t look too bright for my dating life.

“Let us just rest first Cyan, you cannot disturb Cain’s sleep.”

“Ugh, fine, but I will make sure that Mule guy will never do the whole catfishing thing again.”

Her frugal thoughts had not been premature. Because it only took one night before Ellen Mule had started texting me again, he would ask “are you in need of me now?” Before taunting me with vile comments of how useless I would be without him.

“He is so immature” Cyan had said.

“Maybe this is not our thing, we should just give up and I will get ready to return. Maybe I will find long lost family and would make Zoey happy.”

“Don’t you dare, you cannot leave me here alone. I need you.” Cyan cuddles up to her friend’s side before holding her tight, “we can always go the illegal way of keeping you here, my brother knows a lot of people that could help.”

“What? No, I want Zoey to live an honest life, this is not how I am starting my sister life start out.” I had said, “We should first take a break before moving on to the next guy, I need to get that creep of my mind first.”

“Sure, we can always marry you to Aaron and then get divorced after getting the documents.”

She evilly smirked, I had chuckled at her resolute to get me to stay here. It made me appreciate her more by the way she would stop at nothing to keep me close to her.

“Bye the way I will be going home for the weekend, it is aunt’s birthday, and we always celebrate as a family.”

“Oh, have fun.” I enthusiastically said, recalling the times my father and I celebrated mother’s birthdays. He would buy a cake for her, and we would sing and eat together, my mother would smile brightly at the gesture. ‘Ah, here I go making someone’s happy moment about myself.’

“Hey are you okay?” Cyan brought her whole face closer to mine, “you can come with me if you want. You cannot be sad and depressed while I am happy.”

I smiled as happily as I possibly could; she needed time with her family. I had been greedy enough to keep her here for too long, I need not to insert myself in her family celebrations, “I will be fine Cyan don’t worry about me.” I say in the happiest voice possible, but she had seen through my façade with her magnifying eyes.

“What is wrong Kaleah?”

“I… I am just sad, how am I going to explain the situation to Zoey when she grows up.” I lie, “she is going to find out I am not her mother sooner or later. Will she decipher father’s actions as a sign of being unworthy?”

“Hey, don’t stress yourself, we will explain it when she grows up and with the amount of love, we are going to continue giving her she will know it was the best that that man left her.”

“I hope so.”

I feel a sense of guilt for lying to Cyan, but how am I supposed to tell my most treasured friend that I am jealous of her having a whole family that I could not. It would hurt her before I even explained to her.

(Cyan’s POV)

Soon it as time for me to leave my love bugs for a moment to celebrate my aunt’s birthday. I had hoped she had come with me, but I know she is still a bit envious of my relationship with my family. But I know the Beckett family had room for these two precious souls.

“There is someone at the door, please go check I am still changing Zoey’s dipper.”

I heard her yell from the kitchen before running to the door. I was greeted by a timid looking man holding flowers. Strange, neither me nor Kaleah were in a relationship to receive such flowers, unless my secret man (not so secret) sent me flowers.

“We received flowers Leah, come see, they are roses.” I immediately yell when I receive them.

But the happiness was short-lived because when I saw the card that accompanied them, I had known they did not have best of wishes.

‘Dearest Kaleah, I just found out you have a brat, how revolting I had hoped the first child you push out would be mine. But it is still not a deal breaker, though I will not raise that brat as my own, I will still marry you, (she would be a good maid by the way). You dearest Ellen.’

As I dig deeper into the envelope, I come out with two pictures, one of Kaleah at a paint shop, must have been taken yesterday when she went to buy extra paint to finish Zoey’s first portrait. And the next one was a picture of both Kaleah and Zoey at a park.

“What is going on?”

Kaleah casually strolls into the living room with Zoey in hand. “Cyan; you are scaring me, what is it.”

“That bustard is stalking you.”

“What? Who? James?”

“Ellen! That brat sent flowers with this ridiculous letter.”

As I had her the letter the envelope fell and revealed a fake marriage certificate he had edited and a fake passport, making me even angrier.

“I want to kill him, how dare he.”

“It is fine Cyan; he is just acting out his inferiority complex.” She reassures, “he will not do anything wild okay.”

“Maybe I should sleep here tonight, the birthday is tomorrow we can…...”

“Go, you are not robbing your family time because of some jerk who feels inferior to his deceased brother Cyan.”

I had a small disagreement match with Kaleah before she won and promised to call Taylor to stay over. I even went as to order a smart lock in case that delusional man come petrifying my friend.

On my drive home I had called Cain to check on him, his sweet voice had agonized about how my crazy brother had buried him into a mountain of work. Ugh maybe Kaleah is right when she calls him the devil incarnate, how dare he hurt my sexy ginger.

But during our conversation he talked about a peculiar occurrence. My brother, the cold bear he is, had gotten himself a girlfriend. Clayton Kai Beckett had whole girlfriend, a breathing being that had stolen his heart.

I had almost not believed it until I was confronted with a tantalizing image in my family’s kitchen. I had almost laughed until I noticed who Clay was making out with, ‘no way in hell’ I had grumble to myself.

Haile Leech of all women in the world this man had given his heart to Hailee Leech, the same woman who had married six times and killed three of her husbands and swindled two of her husbands, even our family’s close friend.

“Ahhhhhhhhhh.” I screamed at the top of my lungs, knowing who he was ‘dating’ I had known no one in the family knew he had a girlfriend because I knew they would have disapproved of me.

My scream not only startles the two ‘lovebirds’ but I hear Conan (my cousin) groan in his room and grandmother scream to ask what had happened. Infront of me Clayton sighs and Hailee glares at me for interrupting their night. I miss Kaleah already.
