She slowly shakes her head, her eyes suddenly painful. "The swelling is gone..."

"But isn't that a good thing?" I badly want some positive news.

"No, of course, it is good that the swelling is gone, but... Levi, that means his paralysis is most likely permanent." She says with a sigh.

I swallow hard, wanting to stay strong for her. "Oh... right." Another swallow. "I am so sorry, darling, I should never have let him on the horse."

"You heard it yourself, that poor horse was being tortured; it wasn't your fault," she says, wrapping her arms around me. "So, I am sorry if it ever felt like I was blaming you."

And that is my undoing; I can't keep the tears back, so my word comes out as a strained sob. "Thanks."

"Don't cry, Levi." She hugs me tighter.

"I know... it ruins my makeup," I mumble into her hair.

She giggles. "Like I care, but you are making me cry."

We are standing like that for a long time, just holding each other, comforting each other.
