We went in, and she plugged in the refrigerator and put the things she had bought into it. She put the plates and cups into the cabinet. I watched her fix her food, and we sat at the table. She had offered me some, but I turned it down. The food smelled wonderful. I had forgotten what the taste of some foods tasted like, but I still enjoyed the smell of them. I remembered the night at the restaurant. When I saw Tim at the table, I moved closer. I could tell by the look on Dominique’s face that she was not happy to see him. I hadn’t been happy to see him either. Tim had looked so surprised because he had known what I was as I had known what he was in an instant. I woke up and felt Dominique’s sadness. I got up and got dressed. The club would be opening shortly, so I would head there. What could have happened between last night and today to make her feel so sad? I drove to the club and walked in just as Melissa slapped Tim. I got to the bar right as she threatened to kill him. What was going on? Post had come out from the back and was now yanking a struggling Melissa into the kitchen. Her anger was overwhelming. However, it was Dominique’s sadness that I felt the most. Now, I knew something had happened between Dominique and Tim. It had to be for Melissa to get that riled up. “What did you do to Dominique? From the feel of her sadness, I can only assume she is the one Melissa is talking about you hurting.” I said to Tim. Tim looked at me, and I saw anger, pain, and regret in his eyes. “Oh? What did he tell you?” I asked, wondering if Tim had told her what he truly was. “Well, he basically told me why he did the things he did before. He wouldn’t talk much about what happened with him and Jacob, but he told me he had done things he wasn’t proud of. He’s still keeping that part of his life secret, but I guess I can understand since he doesn’t want me mixed up in it. But he also told me that Jacob told him he could either bring me in or I would be in danger. He said they are after you for some reason that I still don’t understand.” “What do you mean he told you that he had to bring you in?” I asked, growing concerned. “Well, Tim told Jacob I belonged to him, and Jacob told him to bring me into the gang. I guess every guy in a gang has a woman somewhere along the lines. This sounds like a biker gang, but I don’t know what that means.” I knew from that Tim had not told her everything about himself. “Dominique, I am pleading with you to stay here for the next few days, not just the next few nights. I can’t say what it was at your house, but I don’t like it.” “Trust me when I say I am not going anywhere for a bit. I was already planning on asking Melissa to open and close the bar for me for a couple of days, so I had time to think and get away from Tim, but this just sealed the deal for me.” “I’m glad to hear it, Dominique,” I said, pulling her close. Dominique spent the next two days at my house. I came out at night and sat with her on the couch but never tried to touch her. Sometimes she would be on her phone or laptop. Sometimes Dominique would snuggle up with me and play on her phone. I never said anything as I tried to give her space as she had asked. She didn’t talk to me either. Instead, she would lean up against me, and I would caress her arm or run my fingers through her hair. I was happy that she was allowing me to touch her at all. Tonight was the last night Dominique would be here. I walked out to the living room and found her on her laptop. I sat beside her, but she seemed so engrossed in what she was doing that she didn’t notice me. “What are you doing, Dominique?” I asked. “I, uh, I’m writing a story,” she stammered. “Do you mind if I look at it?” I asked. “Um, I would rather you didn’t. Dominique rode to the club with me the next night. I was going to take her back to my house, and she could leave from there if she wanted to. There was disappointment coming from Dominique several times while she had stayed with me. It was almost as if she wanted me to do something, but my promise was stronger than that. I opened her door and put my arm around her shoulders as we walked in. We walked in, and I sat at our usual table. Dominique began setting up the system and ran some songs through it. We played, and I could tell Tim was watching Dominique all night. It was hard not to. She was so into the music when she played and sang. Dominique came and sat with me. As the songs played, Tim walked over and held his hand out to Dominique. I watched as Dominique looked at him for a minute and then at his hand. She looked at me, but I didn’t say anything. I awoke for the night and found I had a text message from Dominique. She was asking me about the contracts. I texted her back to let her know I would come in and talk with her. While dealing with everything else, I had put the business deal on the back burner. I suppose it would help her get her mind off of other things. This also let me know that she had left my house when she woke up. I went to the club and walked over to our table. Dominique was already sitting down, so I joined her. I smiled, and she smiled back. However, it wasn’t a happy smile, as it didn’t reach her eyes. I wasn’t sure why, but she was nervous. “Good evening, Dominique,” I said as I kissed her hand. “Hi. It had been several days since Dominique left, and I needed to get ahead of the situation with Jacob and his pack. I went to the club close to closing and waited for Tim. I needed to know for sure what was going on, and since he knew more about Jacob and what he was demanding than anyone else, he would tell me. I needed to know how to protect Dominique. Once I saw everyone come out, I rolled my window down. Sitting almost beside Tim’s car, I didn’t want anyone else to know I was there. He walked over to his car, but I knew he had scented me. He got in his car and waited until Melissa and Post left.
