HANNAH

I couldn't sleep. I stared at the wall like it could tell me how I ended up here.

My thoughts spun so fast I couldn’t grab onto one long enough to feel sane.

And then, I thought about how I first met Nico.

Back then, I was twenty-one and running myself into the ground. Classes in the day, nightclub shifts at night.

I hated dancing for strangers. But I didn’t have much choice. My adoptive mom’s medical bills kept stacking up. Every paycheck I made went straight to her treatments.

People always asked if it felt different being adopted. The truth was it never did.

My mom and dad never made me feel less than theirs. They gave me everything they could. That’s why I couldn’t let them carry everything alone.

But working nights in a club meant dealing with creeps. One night, a man grabbed my arm as I walked past his table. I told him to let go. He just laughed and pulled me closer.

“Let me go,” I’d said.

NICOThe second I felt Hannah go limp, I let go.My own hand was shaking. “I… I’m sorry,” I muttered. “I didn't mean to… uh.”I struggled to find the right words to say. Hannah didn’t say anything. She just sat there on the bed with her hands around her throat. She was coughing like crazy, gasping for air. Her eyes were all red and swollen. She looked at me like I was a monster.Well, maybe I was.I couldn’t stay there any longer. I just walked out. I didn’t even give a damn when the doctors and nurses said hi on my way out.I got in my car and slammed my fists into the wheel. “Damn it!”I hit it again, the horn blaring. I didn't care if people would think I was losing my mind. How could she do this to me?I was trying to figure everything out. We finally got our first child and she killed it?I laughed, but it wasn’t funny. It was bitter and raw. How cold do you have to be to do something like that?Hannah…I used to think she had the purest damn soul I’d ever seen. She’d bend over

HANNAHPaula was fussing over the blanket on my lap. She’d been the only one I let near me these past few days. Nico and Veronica kept trying to visit. I sent them both away every time. I didn't want to see their stupid faces. There was a knock on the door. Paula checked to see who it was. Paula looked nervous. “It’s Mr. Nico, ma’am. He says he needs to speak with you.”I gripped the blanket tighter. My stomach turned just hearing his name. “Tell him I don’t want to see him.”Paula hesitated. “He says it’s important. He won’t leave until you talk to him.”I was so done dealing with him. I felt drained, like I had nothing left in me. But okay… might as well hear whatever crap he had to say. Just get it over with.“Fine,” I muttered. “Let him in. Then leave us.”Paula stepped out. The door opened a few seconds later. Nico walked in. He wore a dark suit like always. I hated how my heart still reacted whenever I saw him.He stopped by the bed. “Hannah,” he said, “we need to talk.”I gla

*Trigger alertHANNAHEverything in my body hurt. My throat was dry. I feel numbness in my arm where the IV drip was taped.I immediately touched my belly. Oh God, I thought. Something’s wrong. “No… no, no, no,” I whispered. I was barely holding everything together.I fumbled for the emergency button. My fingers shook so badly I almost missed it. I pressed it again and again. Where the hell is everybody?A nurse rushed in. “Mrs. Mancini, please lie back. You need to rest,” she instructed. My tears spilled out. “My baby… Is my baby okay? Please tell me.”She glanced away. “The doctor will explain.”“No!” I sobbed. “Tell me now. Please!”She left quickly to get the doctor. Seconds dragged on forever. I could hear my heart pounding loudly.Hurry up. Please, just hurry up… I can’t breathe like this. Finally, the doctor came in. His face was grave. “Mrs. Mancini… I’m very sorry.”“No,” I whispered. “No, please don’t say it.”His eyes stayed downcast. “You’ve miscarried.”My mind went bla

HANNAHI woke up feeling like I hadn’t slept at all.My throat felt tight from crying half the night. I pushed the chair away from the guest room door. My arms were weak. It took me a few tries to drag the chair aside. When I stepped into the hallway, I heard a woman's voice downstairs. Who the hell is here this early?I peeked down into the living room. It took me a moment to recognize who it was.Veronica.She was sitting on the couch with a woven basket in her lap.My body tensed. After what she said to me last time, I had no words left for her.She looked up. “Hannah,” she said softly. “You’re awake.”I narrowed my eyes. “What are you doing here?”“I came to see you.” She lifted the basket. “I brought some homemade cookies with supplements. For your health.”I stepped off the last stair slowly. “Why?” “Because I want to help.”I didn’t trust a word of it. This was the same woman who spent years tearing me down every chance she got.She made me feel small in my own home. She call

HANNAHThe silence on the way home was just the calm before the storm. The car ride felt like forever. Nico’s hands stayed tight on the wheel. Neither of us said a word.Nico was furious, I could feel it. Probably wondering what the hell I was doing in a hotel room with David.Thank God for David. If it wasn’t for him, I might not even be sitting here right now.I’d still be on that lobby floor or worse, dragged off by whoever stuck that needle in my neck.David didn’t owe me a damn thing, yet he saved me. He didn’t have to. But he did. When we finally pulled into the driveway, I finally had some room to breathe. I went back inside the house, barely glancing at him.I headed straight to the kitchen table.Oh shit, I remembered. I must have left the divorce papers in David's hotel room.I searched my bag and rifled through the contents. Sure enough, the divorce papers were gone. I closed my eyes and cursed under my breath. Fine. I’d print another copy. I grabbed my keys and started t
