Mag-log inKael's POV
The world has always ended in fire, once by the divine will and now by silence. I walked through what remained of a city once loved by man, it's towers were black skeletons and it's streets a graveyard of dust and bone. The air tasted of rust and regret, every echo was a ghost that refused to fade. Each step I took left a faint trail of light across the cracked ground like dying embers, gone before the ground can burn. I had learned long ago to hide my fire, to move in the shadows away from anyone looking. I was not meant to walk among the mortals again, but the veil had shattered and the balance I had sworn to uphold had fallen with it. And then she had awakened, the tether, known as Lilly. I had felt her breath long before I ever saw her, a ripple across the dying world. A pulse that tore through every plane at once. It had been centuries since anything has made me feel so alive. At first I thought it was a trick of the gods, one more cruelty to remind me of what I had lost when they cast me down. But when I found her, blood and mud covering her skin, fighting like she had been born for war I had known she wasn't just the tether. She was the thing I had once bled for. The moment she reached out and unleashed the light, the same light that had once only answered to the gods, something deep inside of me I thought was long buried had stirred. And I had burned again, but not with rage this time, with want. It is the cruelest kind of hunger, the kind that can never be fed. I watched her sleep now from the space between worlds, the distance that separated the divine from the humans. The tunnel where she is shimmered faintly in my sight. Her energy was chaotic, twisting through the darkness, she was afraid. Her mind was still processing from what she didn't understand yet. She thought I was a god, I almost laughed when I felt that thought come from her. Once perhaps I was, but now I was something far less and far more. I had been the War God Kael of the Burning Host, sworn blade of the celestial order, breaker of demon kings, the storm that swallowed armies whole. My name had once been a prayer and curse alike, until I defied them and chose mercy over victory. And for that they tore my flame from me and bound it into a human soul, the first tether. That was the first of many, each one born fragile, human, fleeting and each one was a new chain around my throat. I had to watch them all die out, one after the other, as centuries passed. Until her, Lilly was different the fire didn't just burn in her, it was her. The others had noticed her, I can feel the eyes of the old gods, long silent turning toward her like vultures with prey. She was the balance they had forgotten they needed and the weapon they could not control. Which meant they could destroy her if they couldn't control her and I can not allow that. If it turns out she will hate me or fear me even if she never learned who I truly was beneath the ruin and the flame, she had to live. The night surrounded me as I knelt and pressed my hand to the cold earth, the tether's pulse beat faintly beneath my palm it was steady and defiant. "Still fighting," I murmured, "Good." Images appeared through the void between us of her face that was pale in the lantern light, her eyes were wide and uncertain, the tremor in her hand as she touched her chest where my name had burned it's way into her memory. I closed my eyes, the link between us was dangerous and fragile. If I pushed on it too far the gods would feel it, but if I stayed silent too long the demons will notice. The balance was razor thin and I had already lost too much to risk losing her. A low growl rolled through the sky like thunder that wasn't actual thunder. The celestial host was stirring, the ones who banished me, it wouldn't be long before they went after her. So I hid in the shadows between their sight walking the ruins of this broken world like I was a ghost with a purpose, watching and guarding her but also something I shouldn't be doing, wanting her. Every time she closed her eyes I came closer, not out of obligation but out of obsession I no longer had the strength to fight or deny it. It wasn't love, not yet at least, love was a thing for humans bright and fragile. What I am feeling is a need that is ancient and consuming, the kind that built empires then burned them to the ground. I reached for her through the tether link, brushing against her dreams just enough to feel the warmth of her mind and the steady beat of her heart. I desperately wanted her to know the real me and see me for who I really am. There is no telling what fate has in store for us, but I know I won't be able to hide in the shadows much longer not without having her fall into the gods hands or something much worse. I won't be the one to let her perish and with her the worlds, so with that in mind I need to come up with a plan. As I was pulling back from the link her light flared in response, it was wild, instinctive but mostly it was untamed. She didn't know what she was awakening yet, but when she did she would either save this world or end it for good. And I Kael, the fallen god of war, would burn beside her.Riven’s POVShe haunts me, even when I close my eyes, her voice is like music and her name is a sweet escape. Lilly. The moment the world collapsed, when the sky tore and the realms bled together, I felt her awaken. Like a pulse something ancient and beautiful flickered to life inside the human realm, it was the tether. They whispered of her even in the depths of my kingdom, the humans who dreamed of her light and the demons who recoiled from her power. Then there was me, foolish and hungry I followed that whisper like a moth drawn to flame. That was the first night that I dreamt of her. The dream never changed, she stands in the ruins of a city, pale fire around her wrists and her eyes glowing with something she doesn't yet understand. I reach for her through the smoke and my fingers brush her skin then for a quick moment she looks at me, then she is gone.Every night since I have searched for her again, I thought I was going crazy at first a side effect of the realms merging. But
Lilly's POV The sun climbed higher over the settlement and for the first time since the world collapsed it almost felt like a normal morning. The air was calm as the streets were alive with movement, people carried baskets of vegetables to their houses and the dining area. After meeting with Kael that morning I hadn't been able to stop thinking about him. His voice and presence lingered in my mind and refused to go away. But I forced them away, there were too many people pretending life hadn't shattered outside these walls. Liam had gone to speak to one of the guards about what working with them was like, leaving Scarlet, Mary and me to explore. John took Lilac to the house saying she needed a nap. We followed a dirt path lined with flowers growing from carefully tended soil. Scarlet bent down to touch a daisy, her fingers trembling slightly. "I forgot what these looked like," she murmured. "Feels like another lifetime," I said. "It was."A few people smiled at us as we passed
Lilly's POVMorning came as the sun was illuminating a soft light through the window. For the first time since the world collapsed I wake up to peace instead of screams and chaos. The curtains in the room were thin so I felt the warmth of the sun on my face enjoying every minute of it. The memories flashed through my mind, the ambush, the settlement, the strange light that comes from me and the gorgeous man wgho I can't keep away from my thoughts, Kael. His name sent shivers down my spine, not in a bad way, and I knew there was a connection between us that I would need to confront at some point. Scarlet stirred from her bed rolling over with a groan. "Morning already?""Yes it seems like it."She blinked at the light and said, "We didn't die in our sleep so I am taking that as a win."I smiled slightly but my nerves were going crazy, there was something about this place that felt off and unnatural but safe. When we emerged into the kitchen Mary and John were already there with Lilac
Lilly's POV The first thing I noticed was the silence, after the screams, the fire and the panic of running for our lives the quiet of the house felt wrong. The others were already settling in after a quick rest, we all woke up around three in the morning and decided to pick rooms. I leaned against the doorway every one of my muscles aching and hurt, my ribs were bruised from one of the demons. Even now I can still hear the demon saying saying, "Found you," right before Liam had silenced it. I shook the thought away and glanced around the house, it was perfect, unreal even. It had clean floors, working lights, blankets that emailed of laundry soap and there was a fruit bowl on the dining room table with actual fresh fruit. I had forgotten what fresh fruit looked like already. "How is this possible?" I muttered under my breath. Scarlet caught my eye from across the room. "Are you thinking the same thing that I am?""That this is too good to be true?""Yeah. Exactly that."We shar
Lilly’s POV We walked for hours, the cracked highway stretched endlessly ahead, each mile marker was covered in dust with splatters of blood. The wind was blowing hard enough to push us back towards the compound we've left behind. Chicago was a shrinking shadow behind us with it's skyscrapers leaning instead of standing tall. The road south twisted between forests that were empty of leaves from the trees that were charred and split open. John led the way with his rifle raised with Scarlet walking beside him scanning every ditch and broke down car. Liam was at the rear, silent and tense, his eyes always drifting towards me as though he expected me to burst into flames and maybe he wasn't wrong. Ever since the attack at the compound when I released the light I can feel something pulsing under my skin like a second heart beating. It didn't hurt exactly just uncomfortable like it was waiting to be set free. The air shifted around us. "Hold up," Liam muttered, his hand going up in a
Lilly’s POVThe morning came slow and heavy, dragging light down the tunnel like it didn’t want to touch the world above. We’d made it through the night—barely. No one really slept. Every sound echoed: dripping water, shuffling feet, Lilac’s quiet whimpers in her sleep. I sat against the concrete wall, staring at the small circle of light from the hatch above us, wondering what was left.Liam was the first to move. His face was drawn, streaked with soot, jaw tight. The calm authority he’d carried before the attack was still there but dulled and weighed down.“We go up in pairs,” he said, voice rough from exhaustion. “Stay quiet. If they’re still out there, we don’t draw attention.”Scarlet nodded, checking her pistol. John followed with a tired grunt, his arm wrapped around Mary’s shoulders protectively.I waited until they climbed first, then looked to Liam. “You think anyone else made it?”His gaze flicked toward the ceiling hatch, then back to me. “No.” A pause. “But we’ll make it
