Chapter 1

Edith's POV

My husband, Benjamin Olsen, looked at me in disbelief. "Edith, are you seriously taking your anger out on your own son? He's only four! You need to know when to stop!"

My son, Owen Olsen, looked stunned by my words for a moment. Then his little face flushed red, and he clung even tighter to Hailey Franklin's leg. "Fine! One million dollars it is! I don't want you as my mom anyway!"

So, in his eyes, I was such a horrible mother, even though I woke up two hours early every day to prepare nutritious breakfasts for him. I had even passed up opportunities for promotion just to have more time to spend with him.

Hailey hurried to play the peacemaker, putting on her usual act of kindness. "Owen, what have I taught you about being rude? You shouldn't talk to people like that."

Owen pouted in protest. "She's rude too! The day before yesterday, when Dad was spending time with you, she kept calling him over and over to bother him!

"Aunt Hailey, you also taught me that you should give people a taste of their own medicine when they're mean!"

Benjamin's expression changed instantly. "Edith, I was with Hailey the other day because—"

I cut him off with a raised hand. "You spent our anniversary with her. That'll cost you money too."

Benjamin froze and stared at me as though he no longer recognized the woman standing before him.

After a long silence, he pulled a bank card from his wallet and flung it onto the ground. "Edith, even your own son can't stand you. Maybe you should take a good look at yourself and figure out why."

He wrapped an arm around Hailey and led her to the car. As they drove away, the exhaust blew straight into my face.

I simply crouched down and picked up the card in silence.

Its sharp corners dug painfully into my palm, but the pain only strengthened my resolve to go through with this. After all, in my previous life, when Benjamin had stood by and let Hailey take what was mine, I'd cried and thrown tantrums in a desperate attempt to stop her.

Not only had I failed to win back his love, but he had even given my mother's burial plot to Hailey so she could bury her pet dog there instead.

In a fit of rage, I'd slapped Hailey across the face and demanded a divorce from Benjamin.

I'd thought that would make him realize his mistakes. Instead, determined to teach me a lesson, he'd agreed to the divorce without hesitation. He'd even hired one of the best divorce attorneys in the country and exploited every legal loophole until I was left with nothing.

Just days after the divorce, I suffered a sudden cardiac emergency.

I didn't even have enough money to call an ambulance. Somehow, I managed to drag myself to the hospital and forced myself to keep going despite the pain.

Faced with the staggering medical bills, I finally broke down. I swallowed my pride and called Benjamin again and again.

He didn't answer a single call. Instead, he had Hailey use his phone to send me a voice message.

"Edith, you're the one who willingly gave this man to me. You don't get to change your mind and take him back."

Desperate for the money I needed to save my life, I waited in vain. All I received were photographs of Hailey flaunting her victory.

In my final moments, I watched helplessly as Hailey wore my bathrobe and sprayed on my favorite perfume. She kissed my husband on the very silk bedsheets I'd painstakingly washed myself.

Now that I'd been given another chance at life, even if I could never have love, I could at least secure enough money to keep myself alive.

What I hadn't expected was that the son I'd been unable to let go of in my previous life would also turn against me and side with Hailey.

Before I could even begin to process the hurt, my phone suddenly rang.

It was the doctor.

"Ms. Dawson, we've found a compatible heart donor for you. We can schedule your surgery as early as next month."

My knees nearly buckled at the wonderful news. I had to brace myself against the wall just to stay upright.

In this life, I wouldn't have to die in a hospital corridor, consumed by despair.

I'd barely hung up when Benjamin sent me a message.

Benjamin: [I was out of line earlier. I promised I'd make it up to you with a proper wedding ceremony, remember? The designer has delivered your custom wedding dress to the house. Come home and try it on.]

I didn't reply, but I didn't refuse either.

Five years ago, when I'd married Benjamin, his family had just gone bankrupt. They were so broke that they couldn't even afford a proper wedding ceremony.

Back then, I'd believed in his abilities with all my heart. I was certain he'd eventually make a comeback and rebuild his fortune.

I'd thought he'd give me the grand wedding he'd promised, one that would make everyone envious.

Who could have imagined that once he'd made it big, Hailey would come along and steal both his attention and our son's affection?

And so, even after all these years, I'd never gotten the wedding he'd promised me.

…

When I got home and pushed open the door, I immediately saw Benjamin and Owen gathered around Hailey, who was wearing a wedding dress. Neither of them could stop praising how beautiful she looked.

"Let's leave my name off the invitation for now. I want to see Benjamin's expression when he arrives at the wedding," I said.Benedict's smile deepened. He held out his hand to me. "I'm not disappointed in the person I saved. You certainly don't waste any time making decisions."I gently shook his hand. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."…On the day of the wedding, the venue was even more lavishly decorated than I'd imagined.Benedict had invited every prominent figure in the city, including many influential people Benjamin had worked so hard to curry favor with. After putting on my wedding dress, I stood before the mirror and stared at my reflection for a long time, barely able to believe what I was seeing."There's still time to change your mind." Benedict strolled up behind me and folded his arms across his chest. "You look beautiful. Benjamin's already here. Have you made up your mind?"I turned around and took his arm. "I've chosen to marry you. It has nothing to

Edith's POVI opened my eyes, my throat so dry that I could barely speak. "Am I dead?"A man chuckled softly beside me.I struggled to turn my head toward him.To my utter surprise, I found myself staring at a face I never expected to see.It was Benedict Olsen, Benjamin's younger brother, who had been raised overseas by the Olsen family. He was Benjamin's archenemy and the person most likely to threaten his position within the family.Benedict placed a glass of lemon water on the bedside table. He courteously helped me sit up before handing me the glass."Can you drink by yourself?" he asked."Yes…" I silently took the glass, my mind reeling with shock. After finishing the water, I began to feel a little better and glanced around. "Were you the one who saved me?"Benedict regarded me with interest. "You were the one who called me. Actually, I should be asking you why you listed me as your emergency contact."I was in a meeting at the office that day when my phone suddenly r

Benjamin gripped Hailey's wrist so tightly that the veins in his temples bulged. "You even had to take Edith's engagement ring?! When did you ask her for it?"When we pretended to have a wedding, I bought you a 10-carat diamond ring. Wasn't that enough for you?! Do you even have a heart?"Hailey's face flushed red, and she burst into tears. "I didn't steal it! The last time I visited your house, the ring was sitting on the coffee table, covered in dust!"Edith must have decided she was too good for you and that your engagement ring was too cheap to wear in public, so she took it off and tossed it aside!"I know you had no money when you proposed to her. You spent more than half a year saving up just to buy that 3,000-dollar ring."I felt sorry for you. I couldn't bear to see such a sincere expression of your love gathering dust, so I put it on myself!"How could you say something like that about me? I'm heartbroken!"With that, Hailey ran out of the house in tears.Benjamin did

Benjamin hurried out of the bedroom. "Edith? Is that you? Are you back?"When he opened the door, he found Hailey standing in the living room. She was holding the bouquet of sweet pink roses he'd just bought for Edith and was about to leave with it.Benjamin grabbed her wrist, his brows furrowed so deeply they could have crushed a fly. "What are you doing here? Who said you could take those flowers?"Hailey clearly hadn't expected him to be home. After a moment of surprise, she put on her usual sweet smile. "Benjamin, you're home!"Mom keeps saying she wants to go outside for some fresh air now that she's been discharged from the hospital. But she's still weak and hasn't fully recovered, so I thought I'd buy some flowers and plants to brighten up the house for her."I was going to ask you to come shopping with me, but you didn't answer your phone. When I came looking for you, I saw this bouquet in the living room and thought I'd take it for now."For some reason, although Hailey

Benjamin froze, nearly dropping his phone. His lips trembled as he asked, "What did you say? Edith has acute cardiomyopathy? How is that possible?"His ears rang, and he suddenly recalled the last time he'd seen Edith, when she'd completely lost control of herself.By the time he came to his senses, he'd already rushed to his car.…After running five red lights, Benjamin stumbled into the hospital. He snatched the computer from the reception desk and typed in Edith's name. The moment he saw the countless examination records on the screen, his legs gave way. He collapsed to the floor, utterly distraught."Edith... She really has cardiomyopathy?"He couldn't bear to imagine Edith spending the entire month he'd devoted to helping Hailey prepare for their wedding alone in the hospital, with no one by her side as she underwent treatment. She used to be so afraid of pain that even a routine blood draw terrified her. She'd always begged him to cover her eyes before she dared let the

My heart clenched. "What do you mean? Why can't you perform the surgery?"Although I'd been taking the best medication available, cardiomyopathy was a dangerous condition that could turn fatal at any moment. While waiting for my surgery, I'd suffered at least three attacks. My body couldn't afford to wait any longer.David looked troubled. "The donor heart matched to you has just been transferred to another patient."I clutched my chest. "Transferred? Who transferred it?
