Chapter 3

Author: Fish Hater
Panic surged through me.

"Grandma told everyone that bracelet was for me. How did it suddenly become a gift for Ryan's wife?"

My mother scoffed.

"Your grandmother was senile. Why would a daughter who'll marry into another family get the heirloom? Not a chance."

After she hung up, fury made my entire body shake.

Helplessness closed around me. I scrolled through photographs of Grandma, my hands trembling.

Then I abruptly raised my head.

I remembered that Grandma's will had also left me the house my parents were living in. I had simply been too busy with work to record the transfer.

I gathered my identification and went straight to the county recorder's office.

An hour later, the newly recorded deed in my hands finally steadied my heart.

I opened my phone and found Nina Carter, the realtor whose contact I had saved months earlier.

"I want to sell the house in Maple Gardens. It's urgent. List it twenty thousand dollars below market."

She responded almost immediately.

"That neighborhood is in high demand. At that price, I can have a buyer and paperwork ready within two days."

Satisfied, I put my phone down.

Now I wanted to see how they planned to use my house as Ryan's marital home.

Afterward, I treated myself to a comfortable lunch at a newly opened restaurant.

I had made up my mind. A family like this was not worth keeping.

Just as I finished eating, my friend Rachel called.

Her voice sounded uncomfortable.

"Elena, your parents are trying to reserve our three-thousand-dollar premium seafood package and put it on your account."

My ears rang.

Three thousand dollars? Were they planning to eat gold?

Then the family chat began chiming again.

My mother posted photograph after photograph of Harbor House's menu.

"Family, here's tonight's menu. We chose only the best and most expensive dishes, so everyone needs to come welcome our honored guest!"

My aunt Carol replied in surprise.

"Harbor House is expensive. That meal must cost at least a few hundred dollars."

My mother sent a laughing emoji behind her hand.

"Carol, you really are out of touch. The butter-poached lobster alone costs several hundred. The whole dinner is three thousand dollars."

The relatives immediately began replying that they would be there.

I grabbed my purse and went straight to Harbor House.

My mother was standing over the menu, criticizing every detail.

"Don't try to substitute cheaper ingredients. We have an extremely important guest tonight!"

When she saw me, panic flashed across her face.

"Elena, why haven't you gone back to work? Usually you guard that job as though your life depends on it."

My chest rose and fell sharply.

She was right. I was always afraid of losing attendance bonuses, so I rarely dared to take even a single day off.

"Mom, you're entertaining your future daughter-in-law. Why are you charging the meal to me?"

She sneered.

"I knew this was about money.

"You're obsessed with money. Your brother meeting the woman he plans to marry is a major family event. Why is contributing such a hardship?"

I nearly broke down.

"Yes, it is about money. I earn eight thousand dollars a month, and after you call crying poverty, I spend almost seven thousand of it on this family!"

Annoyance flickered across her face.

"Enough with the tears. Go away. Ryan's girlfriend will be here soon, and if she sees you, we'll have even more explaining to do."

At those words, an unnatural calm settled over me, and I met her eyes.

"I'm staying. I want to see exactly how you intend to pay for tonight's dinner."

My wife has been dead for more than ten years. Come home with me, give me a son, and you'll be well rewarded."My parents quietly left the room.He lunged toward me, and instinctive terror made my whole body shake.I fought with everything I had, but he struck me several times.Darkness pulsed at the edge of my vision. Then the door crashed inw

My heart lurched.I hated my family, but some old bonds remained hard to sever.Following the address my mother sent, I rushed to the roof of a rented apartment building.Ryan was standing near the edge with a lifeless expression.I shouted in panic."Ryan, come down first. We can talk about everything else afterward!"He lifted his eyes and glared at me."Stop pretending you care! This is all your fault. You caused everything!"If it weren't for you, I'd be engaged to Chloe right now."I felt helpless."Can you still not see who Chloe really is?"She only cares about money. Even if you had stayed together, it would have ended badly."Ryan pointed at me and cursed."Don't talk about Chloe like that! This is your fault. Now she's being forced to marry a man she doesn't love!"I realized there was no reasoning with him. While I was distracted, something began to feel wrong. My parents were nowhere in sight.I reached for my phone, but a sharp pain struck the back of my h

Chloe's face visibly fell. She grabbed a broom and swung it at Ryan."Ryan, what is wrong with you? Did you bring me here just to humiliate me?"My family may be poor, but I still have pride."You already lied about being an only child. Now you're lying about the house too?"Ryan dropped to his knees in front of her."Chloe, I truly love you. Please give me one more chance."She abandoned every trace of refinement and shouted."Love? What are you offering besides words? You don't even own a house."I briefly wondered whether I had gone too far. Then Chloe pulled an enormous diamond ring from behind her and slid it onto her finger."Since we're being honest, I'm getting engaged next month."My fiancé is giving me a new house and a one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar trust."Come back when you can offer the same."Ryan stared at her in disbelief."Chloe, don't say things just because you're angry."Even if we don't have the house, my parents have savings. They'll use ev

I left without giving them another glance.Nina sent me a message."The buyers from earlier love the house. When would you like to sign?"I replied."As soon as possible."My entire career and life were in Lakeshore State. I was comfortable there and never wanted to return to this town. The paperwork moved quickly. The buyer paid the full price in cash.Remembering my parents' behavior, I hesitated."Marco, there are still some disputes with my family. Vacating the house may not go smoothly."His booming laugh interrupted me."Don't worry, Elena. The moment I saw the price, I knew there had to be a complication. Trouble doesn't scare me."He rolled up one sleeve, revealing a heavily tattooed arm.I stopped worrying.I later heard that on Marco's moving day, Ryan had persuaded Chloe to visit the apartment again.Marco's movers carried them outside along with the couch.Chloe's face turned green. She shouted only one sentence."Ryan, we're finished!" Ryan had never faced anything like this. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.I looked at Chloe with something close to pity."You were lied to. Ryan is not an only child. I'm his biological older sister."Chloe stared at him in disbelief."Is she telling the truth?"Ryan looked desperately at our mother.I sighed inwardly. No matter how old he became, my brother was still helpless without her.My mother rushed forward and grabbed Chloe's hand."Chloe, listen to me. We didn't lie because we wanted to hurt you. Ryan just loves you so much."Ryan nodded frantically."Chloe, are you really going to leave me just because I have a sister?"Conflict flashed in her eyes.He kept pleading."We've been together for a year. Haven't you seen how sincere I am?"My mother immediately joined in."Chloe, I truly adore you. Look at the beautiful room I prepared for you."She pulled Chloe into what had once been my bedroom."See? I built you a princess suite. Our family

My mother's face turned white. She snatched the deed from my hand and examined every line. Then she checked the county seal.It was real."Impossible. This has to be fake. You hired these people to trick me!"I closed the deed and put it back into my purse."Did you forget? Grandma left this house to me in her will."Every face in the room changed. My mother seemed to search her memory. But she couldn't remember. She turned toward my father."Frank, say something! How did our house suddenly become Elena's?"Pain crossed his face.I gave a cold laugh."Can't remember? Let me help you."When Grandma became seriously ill, you were afraid she would die in the house and lower its value, so you rushed her into a nursing home."I was the one who took her out and brought her to my rented apartment. I was the only person beside her during the last months of her life."Of course you had no idea what she wrote in her will."My voice grew louder with every sentence.By the end,
