Chapter 1

Author: Black Scale
The owner of the driving school, Victor Cross, stared at the petition. His face looked as gray as the concrete on the training lot.

"Harper Sutton, what did you just say?"

I closed the passenger door of the training car, unclipped my instructor badge, and set it on the roof.

"I said I'm done teaching them."

Sienna Vaughn stood at the front of the crowd, her high ponytail swaying as she held up her phone. "Coach Sutton, don't take it personally. We're just standing up for our rights."

She turned the screen toward me. The edited video she'd uploaded to a local social media account had already racked up thousands of likes.

In the footage, I slammed on the instructor brake, bringing the training car to a screeching stop before saying coldly, "Pull over. Get out. You're done for today."

The comments were brutal.

[What's wrong with this instructor?]

[Imagine paying to get yelled at.]

[She's obviously traumatized. She shouldn't be teaching anyone to drive.]

I stared silently at the heavily edited clip that showed nothing except me losing my temper.

I remembered the original footage perfectly.

A little boy had darted into the crosswalk, and a box truck was drifting across the lane line in my side mirror.

Sienna knew that. She'd been sitting in the back seat that day, clutching her chest as she'd gasped, "That scared me to death."

But now she'd cut every trace of the danger out of the video, leaving only the moments where I hit the brake and reprimanded the student.

Seeing my silence, a flicker of satisfaction crossed her face.

"Coach Sutton, don't blame us. The road test's almost here. Nobody wants to get so scared by you that they choke during the exam."

Mason Brooks let out a mocking laugh. "The second you get in the car, your eyes are glued to that passenger brake. It's like you think we're about to kill someone every second."

Standing near the back of the group, Melody Carter parted her lips as if she wanted to say something.

But in the end, she lowered her head.

Mr. Cross lowered his voice. "Harper, this video's getting out of hand. Just smooth things over with them. They've got their mock road test tomorrow."

I looked at him. "They've already signed a petition asking for a different instructor. That doesn't mean we actually have to switch!"

His voice rose with panic. "You've been teaching here for eight years. Your pass rate speaks for itself."

Sienna immediately cut in. "We want Coach Lawson."

Not far away, Coach Lawson walked over carrying a travel mug, an easy smile on his face.

"Harper, you've got to ease up on these young people. Driving's all about instinct. You don't have to make everything life or death."

I looked him straight in the eye. "Can instinct check your blind spots?"

His smile froze.

Sienna rolled her eyes. "There you go again."

I didn't argue any further. Instead, I pulled out a document I'd printed ahead of time.

Mr. Cross blinked. "When did you prepare that?"

"The moment the video went online." I placed the Instructor Transfer Confirmation form on the table.

"Once you sign this, you'll be voluntarily transferring to a different instructor. All future training will follow the driving school's standard procedures. I'll no longer be responsible for your lessons, and I won't be offering any private help afterward."

The smile on Sienna's face faltered. "Isn't this just a threat?"

"No." I handed her the pen. "It's respecting your decision."

Mason snatched the pen first. "Fine by me. It's not like we can't get our licenses without you."

One after another, all twelve students signed their names.

After signing, Sienna deliberately tossed the pen onto the table. "Coach Lawson, we'll be counting on you from now on."

Coach Lawson patted the training car. "Don't worry. I'm not nearly as strict. This afternoon, we'll loosen up and take a couple of easy laps."

The group immediately erupted in cheers.

I tucked away the signed confirmation and turned to leave. As I walked past the training lot, a sharp pain shot through my knee.

Rain was coming. My old injury was always more accurate than the weather forecast.

Years ago, one of my students had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake on an elevated highway, sending the car straight toward the guardrail.

I'd thrown myself onto the instructor brake, smashing my knee into the center console so hard my vision went black.

But after the car stopped, that student had hugged me and cried.

"Coach Sutton, thank you for saving my life."

I'd once believed everyone remembered that the instructor brake existed to save lives. Until Sienna edited every stomp of that brake into evidence against me.

At four that afternoon, laughter echoed across the training lot.

Sienna sat behind the wheel, steering with one hand while holding up her phone with the other to film herself.

"Look, everyone! Without that crazy instructor slamming the brakes, I'm driving just fine."

The car drifted over the white lane marking. Ahead, an elderly janitor was pushing a trash cart across the lane.

Instinctively, I took a step forward. Then I stopped.

Coach Lawson lazily pressed the instructor brake, bringing the car to a stop barely a foot and a half from the janitor.

Sienna leaned out the window and grinned at me. "See? You don't have to scream at people to stop the car."

I didn't answer.

But that night, Mr. Cross sent me a text.

[Harper, Sienna's father is coming tomorrow morning. He says you scared his daughter so badly that she's afraid to take the driving test.]

Six months later, at the driving school's annual safety conference, I received the Gold Instructor Award once again. As Mr. Cross handed me the trophy, he gave me an awkward smile."Harper, I was wrong. I used to worry that complaints looked bad and refunds would hurt business."But I finally realized the biggest threat to a driving school isn't a low pass rate. It's putting people on the road who never should've been there in the first place."Applause filled the room.I accepted the trophy without a polished speech.I simply said, "An instructor can teach someone how to drive. But whether they choose to respect the road is up to them."After the conference ended, I spotted Sienna in the parking lot. She'd lost a lot of weight, and her hair was cut short. She stood beside a rideshare car holding a bag of fruit. The moment she saw me, she froze."Coach Sutton."I stopped walking. She held out the fruit. "I'm not here to ask for your help. I just wanted to apologize."I did

Sienna wasn't ready to give up.Three days after the accountability meeting, she uploaded another long video. This time, she wasn't crying. She sat in front of the camera, pale and composed, her voice barely above a whisper."I admit I made mistakes. But Coach Sutton has taken away every path I had left. My family can't afford to pay that much money, and the driving school terminated my training."I just want a chance to start over. Why won't anyone give me one?"The sympathy started pouring back in.[The girl made a mistake, but does she really deserve to have her whole life ruined?][Isn't the instructor a little too ruthless?][What adult hasn't made mistakes?]When I saw the video, Mr. Cross was in his office, cursing under his breath. "How does she still have the nerve to play the victim?"I didn't answer.I simply sent him the last piece of evidence. It was a set of screenshots Melody had forwarded from the group's private chat. Before the accident that night, Sienna

On the day of the formal accountability meeting, the conference room was packed with parents.Three documents sat on the table: the accident report, a preliminary breakdown of the damages, and the insurance adjuster's findings.Mr. Cross slid the cost summary across the table."Vehicle repairs and write-off losses, property repairs, suspended training losses, medical examinations, and compensation for the custodian. The current estimate is $396,000."The room erupted."How can it cost that much? Is this driving school trying to rob us?""They're just kids! They only drove a couple of laps! How does that turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars?""What about the insurance?"The insurance adjuster opened his report."Coverage only applies to legal, authorized training sessions. Stealing the keys, driving after hours without authorization, and livestreaming the incident fall outside the policy."His words silenced the room.Mr. Vaughn's face darkened. "Your school also failed

The next morning, the entrance to the driving school was packed. Some people stood outside filming the training grounds with their phones.Others flooded the comments demanding the school fire me.Mr. Cross hadn't slept all night."Harper, take a few days off from teaching."I looked at him. "Are you suspending my classes, or suspending me?"He avoided my gaze. "Just a temporary suspension from instruction until the investigation is finished."I let out a quiet laugh. "So we're smoothing things over again."A few days ago, when Sienna and the others had petitioned to replace me, he'd asked me to swallow my pride. Now she'd nearly run someone over, then turned around and blamed me. Once again, I was the one being told to step aside.I placed a document folder on his desk."Fine. But before I stop teaching, release these."Mr. Cross opened the folder. His expression changed instantly. There was a petition asking to replace their instructor signed by twelve students, the volu

By the time the ambulance arrived, Sienna was still shaking. She wasn't seriously hurt. The airbag had only left her face red and scraped.Mason had a gash along his temple. The loudmouth who usually loved stirring everyone up could only groan in pain now.The night custodian sat off to one side, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't even hold a cup of water.Mr. Cross pulled up the security footage, and his expression grew darker with every second. In the footage, everything was revealed.Mason climbed through the office window to steal the keys. Sienna got behind the wheel. I tried to stop them, then Mason shoved me. The car took off and nearly hit the custodian.Every moment was crystal clear. When Mr. Vaughn arrived, he didn't ask whether his daughter had done anything wrong.Instead, he pointed at me and shouted, "Did you push her into driving?"Mr. Cross's expression changed. By nine-thirty that night, the training grounds were already dark.I'd just reached the parking lot when I heard the metallic scrape of the back gate opening softly, like someone was trying not to get caught.I followed the wall around and saw the headlights of a spare training car flick on.Sienna was behind the wheel. Mason sat in the passenger seat, and several other students were crammed into the back.Melody stood outside the car, looking like she was about to cry. "Sienna, please. Don't do this."Sienna rolled down the window. "If you're scared, then get lost."Mason held up his phone with a grin. "The livestream's up. Time to show everyone what a genius driver looks like after getting held back by that psycho instructor."Melody clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She tried several times to tap the screen, but someone beside her kept knocking her hand away.I stepped out."Kill the engine. Get out."Everyone inside the car jumped.Sienna's face we
