The court's family services wing had one waiting room, and on the ninth day of the waiting period, Elena and Diane were both in it.

It was supposed to be a brief procedural check-in, a mandatory meeting with the court's mediator to confirm trial logistics. Ms. Okafor had stepped into the corridor to take a call. Ashford had followed his own phone to the far end of the hallway, and Richard had gone to find coffee. The mediator was running twenty minutes late.

  • Not The Surrogate Baby They Ordered    Epilogue: Twice

Two years later. The dance recital auditorium buzzed with the particular chaos of eighty excited children and twice as many anxious parents, programs fanning overheated faces, phones already angled toward the stage in anticipation."Do you see her?" Ethan asked, craning his neck to scan the wings."Third from the left, if Ms. Bethany kept the formation the same as rehearsal," Elena said, not looking up from the program in her lap, though her own leg bounced with the same nervous energy as the parents around them."You look nervous," Ethan said, amusement warm in his voice."I'm always nervous at these things," Elena admitted. "Even after two years of them.""I remember the first one," Ethan said quietly. "You had to talk me through what to actually watch for, since I'd never been to anything like it in my life.""You cried," Elena reminded him, grinning."I did not cry.""Ethan. You absolutely cried. I have a photo.""That photo is inadmissible," Ethan said, mock-serious, though the w

Marcus knocked on Ethan's door a week after the ruling, a folder tucked under his arm, his expression carrying the particular steadiness of a man who had already made peace with whatever came next."You wanted to see me," Marcus said."Sit down," Ethan said, gesturing toward the chair across his desk. "I've been thinking about how to have this conversation for several days now.""I think I already know what you're going to say," Marcus said, settling into the chair with quiet resignation. "I want you to know, before you say it, that I understand completely. I don't think there's a version of this where I keep my position after what happened.""I appreciate you saying that," Ethan said. "I want to be honest with you about my reasoning, though, because I don't think this is as simple as punishment for a mistake.""I'm listening.""You were deceived," Ethan said. "Deliberately, skillfully, by someone with considerably more experience at manipulation than you had any reason to be prepared

  • Not The Surrogate Baby They Ordered    Chapter 147: What the Ruling Cost Her

The story broke online within hours of the ruling, a local news outlet picking up the courtroom proceedings first, the headline blunt and unforgiving: Wealthy Family's Custody Bid Collapses Twice — Judge Cites Pattern of Bad-Faith Litigation.By the following morning, it had spread considerably further.Diane found the article on her phone before she'd even gotten out of bed, scrolling through comment after comment with a growing, sick feeling in her stomach — strangers online calling her family cruel, predatory, grotesque, picking apart every detail the article had managed to compile from public court filings. She brought her phone downstairs, finding Eleanor already seated at the breakfast table, an untouched cup of coffee in front of her, her own phone face-down beside her plate in a way that told Diane she'd already seen it."It's everywhere," Diane said quietly, sliding into the chair across from her. "Three more outlets picked it up overnight. One of them got a quote from the ju

The courtroom was fuller than Elena expected for what was, technically, just a breach of contract hearing — word had apparently spread through the same channels that had once filled the gallery during her custody trial, and she recognized several reporters seated in the back rows, notebooks ready.Judge Randall Okoye, a different jurist than Castellano, presided with a brisk efficiency that Elena found oddly reassuring, his expression giving away little as Ashford rose to deliver his opening remarks."Your Honor, this is a straightforward breach of contract matter," Ashford said. "My clients entered into a surrogacy agreement with a clear, fundamental purpose — to become parents to a child genetically related to them. Ms. Hart failed to deliver that outcome. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding that failure, my clients incurred substantial expenses under an agreement whose core purpose went unfulfilled."Teresa Lin rose for the defense, her tone measured and precise. "Your Hono

The conference room at Ethan's company felt different than Ms. Okafor's modest office — glass walls, a view of the city stretching out beyond them, a long table that could seat twenty but currently held only five.Elena sat at one end, Ms. Okafor beside her, facing three attorneys from Cross Enterprises' legal team across the polished surface, Ethan at the head of the table, his expression carrying the same controlled intensity she'd first seen on his face the day he'd learned the truth about Zuri."Before we begin," Elena said, "I want to say something clearly, to everyone in this room."The attorneys glanced at each other, then back at her, waiting."I appreciate this help enormously," Elena continued. "I do. But I need this to actually be a partnership, not a situation where Ethan's team takes over my case and I simply sit here nodding along. Ms. Okafor has represented me since this entire ordeal started, years ago. She knows my history, my daughter, everything about this case that

  • Not The Surrogate Baby They Ordered    Chapter 144: Not Finished

The envelope arrived on a Thursday, three weeks into the careful, tentative rhythm Elena had started building with Ethan and Zuri — dinners, a weekend trip, Zuri's bedtime stories now occasionally punctuated by Ethan's voice over video call, reading the second half of a chapter he'd promised not to miss.Elena recognized the law firm's letterhead before she'd even finished opening it, dread settling cold and immediate into her stomach.Re: Whitfield v. Hart — Breach of Gestational Surrogacy AgreementShe called Ms. Okafor before she'd finished reading the first paragraph."They're suing me," Elena said, her voice tight with disbelief. "Again. After everything, Ms. Okafor, they're actually suing me again.""Read it to me," Ms. Okafor said, her tone sharpening immediately.Elena read through the dense, formal language with shaking hands. "They're alleging breach of the original surrogacy agreement. Claiming I failed to deliver a child genetically related to the intended parents, which t
