Chapter 1 She Never Read It

Author: Mohini
Poker chips clattered across the table. A second later, the entire table came crashing down.

Melissa demanded, "Josh, what the hell is with that attitude?"

The other guys exchanged awkward looks. None of them wanted to get caught in the middle of whatever this was. So, they'd cleared out within seconds.

Melissa kicked a few chips scattered across the floor aside, her face tight with irritation. "Are you done playing games? You've been acting like this for a week. Your mother doesn't have time for this crap!"

I stayed where I was, but a sharp pain lanced through my chest at the mention of my mom.

When my mother first fell ill, Melissa's private medical center was the only hospital that could provide the specialized treatment she needed. By then, I'd already burned through every dollar I had. So, I swallowed my pride and accepted Melissa's terms like a dog begging for scraps.

Melissa treated Nathan like he was the love of her life. They made out right in front of me, and I pretended not to see it for the money.

I allowed her to humiliate me over and over because there was money waiting at the end of the tunnel—money that I desperately needed to keep my mom alive.

…

One day, Melissa told me Nathan would be staying in our master bedroom for an entire week.

When my mother found out, she couldn't bear knowing I was humiliating myself again and again just to pay for her treatment. So, she took her own life.

Nathan stayed in my house for three days and three nights. During that time, I spent every single second grieving over my mother's cold corpse.

Even now, I could still see her face when I closed my eyes. The cards were the only thing that kept that nightmarish image from creeping back into my head.

Melissa must've noticed my bloodshot eyes because her expression finally softened. "I'm glad you're finally starting to see sense. The Mills family needs a husband who knows when to be gracious and look the other way.

"As long as you have the Mills name behind you, you can have anything you want."

She glanced at the housekeeper. A moment later, a luxury watch was placed in front of me. It was the kind most men could spend years on a waiting list for and still never get their hands on.

My drawers were already full of them.

What no one knew was that every single one was an apology gift, compensation for Melissa sleeping with Nathan. Truth be told, wearing one didn't feel like showing off. It felt like I was walking around with a billboard announcing that I was a cuckold husband.

In the past, I would've grabbed the box without a second thought, sold the watch, and used every cent I got out of it to keep Mom alive.

But now, the one kin I wanted to save was gone.

I calmly pushed the box back toward Melissa and slid a document across the table. "Sign this."

She didn't even bother to read it, just as I thought she wouldn't. She picked up the pen and scrawled her signature across the bottom.

"You could've just asked me if you wanted something more expensive. You didn't have to go through all this song and dance." She tossed the pen aside. "You're only making yourself look even more desperate for money."

Right then, Nathan came out of the bedroom with his suitcase.

As soon as Melissa saw him, she went straight to his side and slipped an arm around his waist. "I'll drive you."

They walked away wrapped around each other, disappearing through the massive house as if I wasn't even there.

…

I looked down at the document in my hands. She had just signed a divorce agreement without even reading it.

I almost started cackling.

My eyes burned with tears, but all I could think about was how easily she'd signed her name at the bottom. Part of me wanted to believe that she wouldn't have if she'd bothered to read even a single line. That part was dying away.

I wiped the last tear from my face and pulled out my phone. I stared at the screen for a long time; the string of numbers I hadn't dialed in years blurred together before I finally pressed "Call".

When the call connected, I said quietly, "I'll see you at the airport the day after tomorrow."

Melissa's voice was so hoarse that I probably wouldn't recognize it if we weren't seeing each other face-to-face.For a moment, she just stood there, drinking me in. Then, she started rambling, almost as though she feared I'd walk away if she stopped."I heard about your company. You finally did it. You built the empire you always wanted." She swallowed hard before biting the bullet and asking, "Josh... do you hate me?"I said nothing."Do you hate me because I failed your mother? Because I failed you?" Her voice cracked. "Because I tried so hard to keep you with me that I made your life miserable?"She looked at me helplessly. "Why didn't you tell me? You should've told me sooner."I lowered my head and let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "Hate you?" I shook my head. "I stopped hating you a long time ago. There's no love left between us, Melissa. How could hate exist without love?"A tear slid down her cheek as she nodded slowly, almost as if she were forcing herself to accept my

  • Nothing Left to Return To   Chapter 7 Three Years Later

Three years had passed since I left the country with Rachel Quinn, and somehow it felt as if my life had finally come full circle. One afternoon, we were sitting in a cafe when Rachel took a sip of her coffee and started reminiscing."You told me you never wanted to see me again," she said snarkily, giving me a knowing look. "Then, you ended up being the one to contact me first. That was when I knew things had gone to hell for you.""It did, but I still made it." I turned toward the window and watched people moving through the busy streets of Pemberton. "It took me too long to realize I'm better off relying on myself. Having to hold out my hand and ask someone else for money every time I needed something..." I trailed off, inhaling deeply. Then, I turned to her and shook my head. "Anyway, I never want to live like that again."Rachel cocked an eyebrow at me in agreement. The irony didn't escape me.Back then, I'd sacrificed every last shred of dignity just to pay for my mother

Melissa couldn't help but wonder, 'Why is Josh at the airport? Where is he going, and who is he with?'Those questions raced through her mind as she hurried to the airport. By the time she got there, the man who had found Josh's phone was still there, waiting for her."Where is he?" she asked, rushing toward him. "You saw him, didn't you? Was he okay?"The man thought it over for a moment before replying, "Well, he looked pretty badly hurt. Guy looked like he'd been through the wringer."Melissa's face went pale."But there was a woman with him," he added. "She was helping him through security.""A woman?""Yeah. I tried calling after him, but they were already on their way to the gate."He handed Josh's phone to Melissa and left, leaving her standing in the middle of the terminal with even more questions than before. She wanted to feel relieved that I had made it onto a plane despite my injuries, but all she could focus on was the woman with him.I didn't have many friends a

"What did you just say?" Melissa whispered in disbelief. She felt her muscles lock up one after another as she stared at the death certificate on her screen, the words refusing to sink in."Ms. Mills, your mother-in-law passed away some time ago. We assumed Mr. Fraser would tell you himself, so we didn't contact you separately."The hospital staff member hesitated before continuing, "It's very unfortunate. She took her own life. Her treatment had actually been going well. There was a real chance she could've recovered."Each word hit Melissa harder than the last."That's impossible." She shook her head, struggling to make sense of what she was hearing. "Josh never told me. Something this serious happened, and he... he didn't say a word?"She couldn't make sense of it.After all, I had always relied on her for everything. I used to FaceTime her from stores because I couldn't decide which shirt to buy without asking for her opinion.I told her everything, yet I never breathed a w

  • Nothing Left to Return To   Chapter 4 The Last Thing She Left Me

I just stood there like a statue for several seconds, unable to process what Melissa had said.My mother had worked hard her entire life just to raise me. When I married Melissa, she had poured nearly everything she had into helping me build a life of my own. After her passing, that house was the only thing she left behind.I hadn't been able to do much for her while she was alive, but I refused to let anyone take the last thing I had left of her."No."My voice came out firmer than I expected.Melissa scoffed. "You'll do anything for money. You tried to sell your wedding ring, and you let Nathan take your place as my husband for a price. So, why are you suddenly getting sentimental over some run-down old house?"She crossed her arms against her chest. "Your mother spent years in a private hospital suite that cost 3,000 dollars a day. After everything my family spent keeping her alive, that measly house doesn't even begin to cover it."Blood rushed to my head, and my whole body

My ears started ringing.I swallowed hard before forcing the words out. "That's impossible. You offered to buy this ring from me before. You said it was worth two million."The jeweler hesitated. "The ring you wore at your wedding was absolutely real, Mr. Fraser. But this one..."He cleared his throat and added, "This one is fake. I'm sure of it."My mind went completely blank. Then, I opened Nathan's Instagram, almost out of instinct alone. A few days ago, he'd posted a photo of a diamond ring. I hadn't thought much of it then, but now the caption beneath it made my stomach turn."Fake people deserve fake diamonds; real love gets the real thing. I guess this is what it feels like to be the favorite."My hand started shaking as I saved the photo and sent it straight to the jeweler.A few minutes later, his reply came through."This diamond is real."I stared at the words on the screen. It was my diamond. The same one Melissa had slipped onto my finger when she promised I w
