WILLOW’S POV
Five girls have been betrothed to Alpha Killian Hayes and they’ve all met the same fate.
Death…
“Guards!”
… he stays locked up in his castle and only comes out at night to do inspections and pass judgments…
“Lock her up so she doesn’t try to run away. The Lycan King’s Beta will be here to take her anytime soon.”
… rumor has it that he has a horrible temper that makes him kill people at will and the entrance to his castle is lined with the skulls of his transgressors hanging on spikes…
The guards arrive and start pulling me away which they really don’t have to since I’m not trying to resist and I don’t intend to. I simply do not have any energy left in me to do so. I am drowning in fear of my impending doom.
… some say he drinks the blood of werewolves. Others say he’s the beast who transforms at night and kills his brides-to-be.
I have no idea which of these rumors are true or false, but what I do know is that Alpha Killian Hayes of the Crescent BloodMoon Pack is a brooding, nocturnal demon and being betrothed to him means I will not live to see the next full moon.
The door I’ve just been shoved into shuts in my face and just when I think I’ve finally had a moment to cry alone, the door opens again, revealing Harriet, the very last person I want to see right now.
“Oh, don’t look so disappointed, I’m only here to formally tell you goodbye and wish you good luck. What kind of sister would I be if I didn’t?” She says in the most patronizing tone and a thousand different things I can do to hurt her right now cross my mind.
I hate her.
Not only for the fact that she has been sleeping with my mate behind my back all this time to the point where she has gotten pregnant for him, but for all the times she made my life miserable because of my wolf-less nature. A sister who has been nothing but a hater and punisher. My number one enemy.
Blood boils in my veins when she stalks closer and closer to me until we are barely inches apart. I can feel her hot breath fanning my face as she breathes and it absolutely disgusts me.
“What do you want from me?” I ask, my voice tight with fury.
“You’re not going to last a day with Alpha Killian and that’s a good thing because then, this family will finally be rid of an abomination like you. You’ve brought nothing but shame upon this household and it’s only right that you die. You’ll watch me thrive as an Alpha from the land of the dead.”
“You slept with my mate behind my back.” The words slip out even though I never intended them to. I hate the satisfaction it brings her whenever she’s reminded of the fact that she got my mate for herself. That wicked smile I’m so used to receiving from her creeps up her cheeks and lights up her entire face like a lamp.
“No hard feelings. He was never yours in the first place.” She mocks and I lose it.
I raise my hand in the air to strike her hard in the face, but my plan is thwarted by her quick impulse. Before I know it, I’m on my knees, screaming in agony from the unbearable pain tearing through my shoulder-joint as she has my arm twisted in an uncomfortable angle.
She’s strong. She has always been. It was foolish of me to try and attack her.
I let out another yelp of agony when she grips a handful of my hair very tightly and yanks my head backwards and down so that I’m staring up into her angry, wicked eyes.
“Careful, sister.” She sneers. “Right now, my advantage over you in combat isn’t just the presence of my wolf, but my pregnant state as well. My hormones are all over the place. I could snap you in two halves without battling an eyelid.” She ends the statement with a great shove that sends me scampering a few feet away from her. Relief washes through my released shoulder and prickling scalp like calm waves on an ocean shore.
I wish she would just give me a break for once.
“There’s no fun in killing you myself. It’ll be more satisfying to have you die by whatever means it is that the previous brides-to-be of the Lycan King have.
Just then, a guard walks in and my heart drops into my knees because that can only mean one thing.
“Beta Kane has arrived.”
“It’s time to meet your nemesis.” Harriet chirps in the most enthusiastic tone.
I am like a walking corpse as I’m being led into the spacious living room.
Pale, cold and completely void of life.
Apart from my parents and Miles, there’s a powerful looking man standing at the center of the room, flanked by two others dressed in soldier uniforms. He is undoubtedly Beta Kane. His towering height, muscular build and overall intimidating aura completely gives him away. The moment he sets his eyes on me, his face twists with disgust. He gives my father a sharp look. My heart lurches.
“She’s as frail as a butterfly!” He thunders.
A few hours ago, a statement like that coming from Miles would have made me blush, but I highly think that the stern looking man who just said it meant it as a compliment.
He has gone red with rage.
All the color has drained from my father’s face. He’s terrified.
I crumble like a pile of blocks when the Beta’s heated gaze meets my face again. My trembling knees are barely able to keep myself upright as he burns holes through various parts on my body with his scorching, lingering gaze.
“She reeks of weakness and I cannot smell any wolf in her. She has no wolf. This is not what the Lycan King asked for!”
“My Lord… I mean, Beta Kane.” My father falters. My father never falters in his speech. This is serious. “I would have loved to offer my second daughter a lot more… normal, but she just recently found her mate and has been marked already. We both know the Lycan King does not accept already marked she-wolves.” He says pointing to Harriet who hastily shows Beta Kane the fresh mark Miles put on her a while ago.
My eyes are filling with tears and I’m letting them flow and feeling the burn in my throat and everything hurts.
Now it’s all clear to me why Miles always refused to mark me. They’ve all had this planned out from the very beginning. To let him mark Harriet just in time for them to hand me over to the Lycan King.
I have been so blind and foolish.
“Willow is the only unmarked daughter I have.” My father concludes and the Beta gazes at my full length disapprovingly once more. He doesn’t seem to be satisfied with what my father is offering him and looks furious by the fact that the better candidate between Harriet and me can no longer be a candidate, however, he knows he has no other choice, but to accept me.
“Hmm.” He grunts and turns to one of the soldiers flanking him. “Take her.” He orders and as the guard approaches, I contemplate my options.
It’s either I start screaming and begging my father to not let them take me, which would yield no positive results or I quietly go with them and meet my doom or I…
Without a second thought, I break into a full-blown run and let my feet carry me out of there as fast as they can, ignoring the screams from my mother and sister and instructions to get me from my father and the Beta.
WILLOW’S POVI’m still shaken up by Maddy’s threat as I head to the training center. She never makes empty threats. If she says she’s going to get her revenge on me, I best believe she’s going to do just that. And the anger in which she made that promise to me made me understand that whatever she plans to do to me would be life altering.I’m scared and I know the most reasonable thing to do right now would be to seek help from Alpha Killian. He’s definitely going to do something about her just like he did with Josh, but just thinking of doing that makes me feel the greatest coward of all time.Josh was a guy, that’s why I was scared of dealing with him. But Maddy is a girl, just like me. I can definitely handle her.As I draw closer to the training building, my anxiety spikes.I’m not only anxious about what Maddy has planned for me, but also by the prospect of seeing Gamma Axel after last night. He saw Alpha Killian and I kissing and he must think the absolute worst of me right now.
CHAPTER NINETY-FOURWILLOW’S POVThe moment I step out of the Alpha Killian’s bedroom after rounding up with my morning chores, I head down the hallway to the staircase leading down, away from his quarters. I exit the building at the speed of light and release a heavy sigh of relief once I’m at a safe distance away from it.I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night because I kept thinking about how I was going to face him this morning, but to my relief, he wasn’t in his bedroom when I got there earlier. The only thing I found was a note from him, telling me he had to leave earlier than normal.I don’t know if he left because he didn’t want to deal with the severe awkwardness that would have plagued the atmosphere if we had met in his room. I might be delusional thinking this, but I’m just happy he wasn’t there.Since I still have a few hours before it’s time for training, I head to the cafeteria to eat breakfast.Lately, I haven’t been receiving hateful stares or remarks whenever I walk
KILLIAN’S POVAstrid’s question stops me dead in my tracks and so does Willow. She’s staring heatedly at Willow and I just know my presence is the only thing stopping from attacking Willow right now.“I asked a question. Why is no one answering me?”I turn to Willow and the fear etched on her face makes bile churn in my stomach. She has no reason to be terrified of Astrid. If anything, Astrid is the one who’s supposed to be afraid of her because she's her queen.“Axel will escort you to your quarters.” I tell my fear-stricken mate. “What about you?” She asks, searching my face. “Don’t I need to prepare your bath so you can freshen up before going to bed?”My irritation spikes. How can she think of serving after the wonderful time we just had?The only thing I want her to do for me tonight is hold me in her arms all night, but that’s not something I can ask from her. At least not now.“That will not be necessary.” I say tightly and turn to Axel who’s standing a few meters from us, rea
WILLOW'S POVHe says huskily and I calmly shake my head in denial.“The water seems deep.”“It’s not. You can see where the level level’s at when I stand up.”“I’m shorter than you are. My toes won’t touch the base without me completely submerged and I can’t swim.”“I’ll keep you afloat.” I look at him long and hard. “Trust me.”Those last two words completely disarm my security.I nod in approval and immediately, he hoists me by my waist from the pool coping and dips me into the pool. My weight sinks into the water and my feet desperately search for the floor beneath, but by the time it finds it, my nose is barely out of the water.“Oh my…”Alpha Killian quickly lifts me up before I can drink more water trying to scream. I wrap my arms around his neck and cling to his body as I struggle to keep as much of my body as I can afloat.Laughter rocks his entire body as he struggles to keep me still in his arms and I should be upset, but how can I be when I’m safe and in the comfort of his
WILLOW’S POV“I think it’s time for our next activity.”“Huh?” I ask, confused after Alpha Killian’s unexpected announcement. My spine goes rigid when he places his hand on the small of my back and starts to lead the way out of the garden. I have a lot of questions to ask him, but the warmth spreading from the spot his hand is occupying on my back to the rest of my body is very distracting.“Where are you taking me?”I finally ask after several moments of urging my brain to think straight.“You’ll see.”That’s all he tells me as he takes me through a door, down a hallway and through another door which leads to a patio and then the most beautiful pool I have ever seen. I shoot him a perplexed look as his hand falls from my back.“A pool?”“Yes.”“But I don’t remember saying I wanted to swim.”“You chose an activity for us to do. It’s only fair that I do the same.” He explains calmly and I eye the blue liquid in the square hole a few meters from us before looking back at him.His abilit
WILLOW’S POV“Why do you look so stunned by the fact that I know that detail about you?”“Because I can’t seem to understand how you know that. You’re never around the castle to see me go there.”“I have my ways.” He brags and my frustration mounts.“Can I know what that way is?”“Does it matter?”“As a matter of fact, yes, it does.” I say firmly, shooting him a stubborn look and hoping he would cave and tell me what I need to know. It’s probably not a big deal, which means he used to find out that I frequent the garden, but my curiosity won’t let me rest and my delusions are starting to take over my mind.Does he have people who monitor and report my every move to him in the castle? If that’s the case, why?Is it because he cares about me? Or because he suspects me of something and wants to make sure I never try to escape from the castle.“Oh look, a flower.” He suddenly exclaims and walks past me behind. I quickly turn around and watch him walk up to a rose flower plant where he plu
KILLIAN’S POVMy brain is too broken to process the words Eleanor just uttered. She caught Willow eating my leftovers? What is that even supposed to mean? After I finished my meal, Willow carried those dishes and started eating what was left in them. Is that what Eleanor is trying to tell me right
WILLOW'S POVI beg your first and foremost pardon?I blink a million times in the second from pure shock. Is he giving me his credit card to go on a shopping spree for myself? This is a dream, right?“Willow.” His voice jabs me out of my thoughts and I shake my head in denial.“No. You don’t have
WILLOW’S POVI meet Maddy laying on her bed and scrolling away on her phone when I go back to the bedroom. She doesn’t say a word to me and I’m happy about that even though I doubt there’s anything she can say or do to me today to ruin my day. Not after the amazing compliments I got from both Alpha
WILLOW'S POVA horrible thought crosses my mind, but I quickly shake my head and dismiss it. There’s no way that could have happened. She was fast asleep when I left the bedroom.“Hello.” I call out with my voice trembling with fear. “Is anyone there?” I ask, but several seconds fly by and no respo
